No fast travel..

No fast travel = more fun = more time to invest on the game

I agree on the real time carriage travels..and if only horses were better in this game (like Red Dead Redemption, exactly)

I keep seeing comments like this. No fast travel allowed, but carriages are OK? Well, no. They work just like fast travel. They are fast travel. ...
No, like in our world, you must pay to use the carriages which makes them acceptable even if we don't actually travel. There is a mod that makes them "scenic"; you'll find it on the nexus.

Furthermore, carriages don't go everywhere, only to he holds capitals.

I agree that carriages are the same as fast travel. But that doesn't make them bad - I fast travel all the time and still enjoy the game. Of course I don't fast travel anywhere, but if I've just cleared a dungeon I'll likely fast travel back to the city rather than walk/run/ride.

As for the real-time carriage thing: didn't Bethesda release a mod or something showing why they didn't include it? Every time the carriage hit a rock or something in the road, it would either stop still or veer of course and such. It was more trouble than it was worth, really.

Correction: It was more trouble than Bethesda could handle. Obviously, it can be done, and has been done.

I walk my current character everywere. I do not run except when I sprint so that my endurance falls as running should do. I will make use of carts if I have the money occassionally and I have used horses. As for it taking a while sure it does but I have discovered litterally DOZENS of locations from walking that I missed in previous play throughs becuase I ran past.

Not using fast travel is a way to really see what the world has to offer a Dovahkiin. You don't know what you're missing until you get out on the roads and see it. There's a lot of radiant action going on. I very rarely fast-travel at early levels. Now, at Level 50, I'm trying to get dragons to spawn and I've been down these roads many times so I fast-travel some. There's still a lot of story going on though so I don't do it all the time. Relax, take a walk, experience Skyrim life. :tes:

I agree. I stopped buying horses entirely because they're much more trouble than they're worth. Here's a dumb, hooved beast of burden that should be running for the hills at the first sign of trouble, and instead charges into battle against a horde of axe-wielding barbarians. Ridiculous. You can't do a thing while on horseback except ride, and by the time you get off for a fight, it's already upon you, and the dumb horse. Before Shadowmere, if I wanted a horse for some odd reason, I'd just hit the different military camps until I found one where I could borrow a horse instead of stealing it. Then it fast-travels with you every time, though it starts to trot away if you don't hop on it right away. That's until it gets itself killed, which happens quite often.

I do actually walk and take in the beautiful landscape. Fast travel ruins the experience for me.

I only fast travel when I'm getting to my carrying limit and need to sell, and then I fast travel back the original point.

I play on the PC so I have a variety of mods that improve the walking experience. Imps Improved Needs (need to eat and drink, food consumption, exhaustion, etc) and Hypothermia (tracks weather exposure, blocks fast travel) turn it off in my game. I haven't used fast travel in a long time and don't miss it - wouldn't want it. I've done every plot and story in the game now and there's no desire to 'see how it ends'. Now it's all about the journey and I'm finding that way more enjoyable than fast travel, click through conversation, go kill stuff, fast travel, click through conversation, kill stuff, rinse and repeat ever was.

On my first playthrough, I walked to each city by foot at least once first before starting to use fast travel or carriages.

Except for Markarth, I got there unexpectedly. :hehe:

Once, running back from Solitude to Whiterun, I encountered a dragon south of Dragon's Bridge. Whack bam boom, dead dragon, grabbed his money, bones and scales, and he had a warhammer i think. Just beyond Robber's Roost, I ran into a Thalmor patrol, and wound up adding all their gear. South of Rorikstead, boom, another dragon. More bones and scales, some weird bit of gear, and off we go. By the time I hit the road leading to Markarth, I was carrying over 500 pounds, and walking, so I Whirlwinded back to Whiterun, and when I arrived I was toting over 600 pounds of gear, and a guard came out and asked me to stop that ... shouting, it was making people nervous. But, yeah, kind of a pain to walk that far, but sort of interesting too.

Now, sometimes I walk just to be walking. "Yeah, I'll get around to your damned quest, I'm watching birds and butterflies, leave me be." But, if you're overburdened, Whirlwind Sprint is a time saver, plus it scares people.

I have one character whom I walk everywhere, I mean literally walk. I like to think that Hiyne is a traveling minstrel who when he stumbles upon a new found city he will sing songs of his travels. I have to use illusion magic though. As I don't fight anything I just have to pacify/fear everything until I am a safe enough distance..

Other than that, I fast travel with every other character.

I always run from town to town. Until I have decent mounted combat, no horses. Sometimes , while Im traveling , I just stop and live in the woods ( camping mods ) , or in some imperial camp ( death to the stormcloacks! )

I used to jog, not walk. And it was unique when exploring at first but it ended up so tedious when I had go back and forth that my next character fast travelled. I was doing the Dark Brotherhood quests and I had to go to random places to kill random NPC characters. At first I didn't realise these were Radiant quests and I thought I was doing this to make my guild stronger. I was jogging from Dawnstar to everwhere else. It was become boring as I ended up taking the same paths again and agan.

There were also other quests that wanted me to go to one city and deliver something, then go all the way back. Sometimes multiple times.

I have now changed my style so that I can fast travel instead of walking to the same places again. Sometimes I do just go out and walk around doing my own thing. The funny thing is that when I first got the game on release I'd spent over 200 hours without doing barely any quests. I just chose to walk around where ever I wanted to go. I explored what I wanted and did whatever I wanted.

I then made my Assassin who basically was helpful to everyone but really he'd kill anyone in cold blood but no one knew, I never once fast-travelled but I did take carriages to cities. I did the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood along with quite a few side quests. I have now made my Dragonborn warrior character who has started Companions and the Main quest. After walking up High Hrothgar once I knew I wasn't going to walk up it everytime just to get to the Greybeards. I am actually getting bored of this warrior already but I want to get the trophies for the companion quest and main quest.

Unless I somehow make my mage complete the main quest.

I keep seeing comments like this. No fast travel allowed, but carriages are OK? Well, no. They work just like fast travel. They are fast travel. The screen blanks out, you get the loading screen, and then you're magically there. In Red Dead Redemption, you could actually sit in the train or carriage and watch the landscape go by. You could take the real time that the ride took. In Skyrim, it's just a big time skip, exactly like FT.

I would compare it to Morrowind which didn't have Fast Travel. I rarely use a carriage, but if I've ran the same rout a few times recently I'll use one to save on the time. Plus they are only in 5 locations, and only go to 10 locations. They only really help you if you are going from one corner of the map to the other. If you are a mage there isn't even a carriage close by, so no fast travel means you will be walking the paths in and out of winterhold quite a lot.

I can't help but fast travel, I know the game is so much better without it, I'm just too lazy -_-

Ironically, I've had to fast-travel a lot more to avoid the problems with atomic nirnroots, respawn timers breaking in exterior cells, and the pile-up of discarded weapons along the roads.

Didnt the Patch fix the weapons and arrows piling up? And what is this atomic nirnroot exactly?

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1360604-will-bethesda-ever-fix-atomic-nirnroot-glows/

Read if you dare regarding the nirnroot bug for consoles.

On Topic - I use FT only via the carriage system. I play it like Morrowind where there was no direct player only fast travel with clicking a spot on the map, just in-game mechanics that similated it like the Mages Guild guild guide services or the boat and silt striders systems. I will FT if im in a hold capital without a carriage such as Winterhold as I view them not having the carriages as a simple oversight by Bethesda that makes no sense. Everywhere else it's put on the walking shoes time for me.

I forgot one instance where I use FT. Urtho's post reminded me. I use carriages, but I will also use boats.

My character will not swim in freezing water without drinking a resist frost potion. However if I am at a location with a small boat I will get in the boat, then fast travel to another location that is touching the water. I don't think of it as fast travel. I think of it as rowing a boat. Only done it once and I was really in the middle of no where at the base of some cliffs.... boat seemed quicker than walking along the shore forever with no enemies to stay away boredom.
