Feeling like I am in a GameFly commercial

Post » Wed May 11, 2011 12:06 am

Character development is too slow to be rewarding. The available weapons are laughably ineffective (I had a fully modified/repaired 10mm SMG and (in VATS) dumped 40 rounds in a SM Master's face at point blank range with the result of only lowering his health a few bars) Even beyond level 12 my main weapon is still the lever action rifle I picked-up on level 4 because the others that are available, Service rifles, 9mm SMG, hunting rifle, caravan shotgun are even more of a joke. After struggling to level 20 I can say with certainty that the main quest is a boring chore... Which is basically how I feel about the game as a whole. I can't believe I paid retail for a game and guide book based only my enjoyment of FO3.

Protip: Armor piercing rounds exist for a reason.

Wow, and here I thought the character developement was too fast.

Did you intend to play this as an FPS or as an RPG?

*hits ignore on him*

Don't know if you played FO3, but a 10 mm smg didn't do didly squat against a SUPER MUTANT FRIGGIN MASTER!

I use the cowboy repeater, its a lever action, but its still great. o find some special weapons

*goes back to happy positive thread*

An unfortunately high number of people tend to go into this game with the FPS mentality. Not taking a jab at FPS games, by the way (I love them, myself,) but this game is an RPG first and foremost.

Me too, I hit the level cap way before the end of the game (and no that is not an argument for the level cap to be raised!)

Weird. I also feel like you're in a Gamefly commercial! Kidding.

Sorry you're disappointed. I'm glad to say that I disagree with you. See, there's your problem. You just need to be more like me. :P

Might have something to do with those being low-level guns. Also armour needs armour piercing rounds, which you equip on the "Ammo" tab of the inventory.

True.

At least it should be (an RPG). FPS games are good for what they are (I too like a few, if you can imagine :P), but there is a huuuge overload of them in the market as we speak.

Same here. I hit the cap way too early, considering.

I felt the complete opposite. I felt the game was fairly easy as i played it at hard difficulty. I downloaded a mod to make it more realistic and i also think that the MQ was much more dynamic. The choices werent as much black and white as they were ambiguous. Another thing is that if used in the correct way the hunting rifle and Carav. shotgun were both very effective if used correctly. I dont know y our expieriances were so different.

Yes and it works well as an RPG, there is a semi logical work around/ strategy to most components of combat. If your targets wearing armor use AP rounds, if its a fast flying insect shoot off the wings, if its a robot use pulse grenades, if its a Super Mutant using a hammer shoot its weapon out of its hands or shoot its legs. I find combat much more rewarding and exciting in Fallout 3 even though i loved the game, after a while FO:3 became a cinematic when it came to combat, pullt LB, select three enemies heads, pull RT, collect loot. Whereas here i am forced to run away or use up all my stimpacks and ammo on just a couple of Fiends or pack of Coyotes.

Really? I thought it was too easy, I'm leveling up way to fast. I reached level 30 in half the time of Fallout 3 with my guns character, and now im 4 hours in on my Melee and im at level 10

1) Are you playing on Easy difficulty?
2) Are you playing on hardcoe mode?
3) Have you attempted combat against enemies that are at a higher level than you?

I'm finding most of the economies in NV to be more conservative than those in FO3. I like that, though. By the time I was level 15 in FO3 I had awesome armor and weapons coming out of my ears to the point that I stopped even picking up things like combat armor. In NV if I come across a suit of combat armor I get excited because it's expensive to buy and expensive to repair. I'm finding the economic and character development systems in NV to feel more "weighty," which to me is making them feel more rewarding. Just my opinion, though.

Ok. 10 MM SMG= low to no DT targets because of its low DAM and high DPS. Your DAM needs to overcome the Targets DT or else your gonna be shooting bb's at a tank basically. Try something high powered for a SM Master... lol thought that was obvious but i guess not.

Same here, In fallout 3 I had Combat Armor at level 10 or so. Now I'm level 12 and have yet to come across Combat Armor on my Melee character, but I guess that is because armor actually does something now.

I'm almost at the level cap and I haven't seen more than 5 super mutants...

Slow down, don't rush so much. You shouldn't see a SM Master till late game.

Go out and do more quests.

Which is because you're using the wrong weapon for that target. Super Mutant Masters have 30 DT. Ergo, this means that weapons with less than 30 damage will do only ~20% of their listed DAM figure. Further, SMMs have fairly large health repositories. A 10mm SMG is about the last thing you want to use on that sort of enemy.

It's not that the weapons are ineffective, it's that you're using the wrong tool for the job. You wouldn't use a hammer to unscrew something, would you? It's just like that here.

Yup....

Brush gun + 104 AP + 100 gun skill + 8 Agl + Bounty hunter duster / 2 SMM's + 1 NK = 3 super sledges...

I can't fathom how anybody could enjoy FO3's storyline and not like the plot of New Vegas. FO3's plot read like something out of a Disney movie up until the point your dad got axed, and most of the important NPCs had personalities so exaggerated that they were practically Saturday morning cartoon character archetypes.

That was the point of F3...in many ways it was a parody of a 1950's sci-fi version of the apocalypse, and it was intended to be.

Your character was a larger than life legend, and the people he/she met, and the things they dealt with, were intended to be taken in that context.

Seriously, consider the movie '300'...as a serious movie, it was cr*p...but as a recanting of a legend, it was superb....same same for Troy....

Supporting this argument I would throw in the episode of the Simpson's when Homer catches 'general sherman', the big catfish...people love a good yarn (story), and a really good one always gets bigger in the telling. So did the story in F3...I consider that is sadly lacking in FNV, great storyline though, but our characters are, well, in my view, a bit bland....

Character development too slow, game too short and all the rest of the usual stuff you see go with those phrases, like someone else said, Fallout is RPG first FPS second, and no, I'm not an FPS fan, but neither am I having a dig at them, each to their own, but as already pointed out, Fallout is RPG, I'm just keeping my fingers very tightly crossed they don't do to this what they did to the Mafia franchise

At level 12 you should already be well stocked on armor penetrating rounds and have a hard hitting gun of some sort. It's easy to get a trail carbine or light machine gun pretty early in certain spots, but barring that you can at least get 'That Gun' or a .44 magnum and go to town. Using the wrong gun for the job on an opponent you aren't high enough to deal with isn't a fault of the game.
