No Female Avatars

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 1:36 pm

As a female player of FPS games I was looking forward to the game Brink.

Then, I found out that there there is no female avatars included in the game.

I sat there for a full sixty seconds in silence, frustrated at this bit of news.

Searching the net a bit I came across several quotes about 'why' they would not be included.

Not only was I insulted, I was then pretty much pissed off.

Too much trouble? I see. Well, I will happily take my money and find a game that doesn't think we are 'too much trouble' to design for.

Enjoy your new tattoo's boys. I hope they are as pretty as my ass looks on the way out the door.

I'm a guy, but yeah, I was a little off-put by no female avatars myself. Haven't read up on any of the reasons why, but it's likely something along the lines of, "Well, we already have a working set of game avatars; why expend effort doing that twice?" That's usually the reason given when this sort of thing crops up. It barely matters in the end. Their game, their decision. As you've demonstrated, don't like it? Don't buy it. Weighed mathematically, the amount of people put off enough to decide to not buy it will cost them less money than the amount of time required to make female characters would. Makes sense to me, though I don't like it in a "What I Want From This Game" sort of way.

don't get all high and mighty - there are other things that didn't make the cut because they were "too much trouble." Molotovs for instance is one of them - to get the flames to behave properly would take a ton of work. SD is a small developing studio (only like 70 people) and a lot of them are recently hired to work on Brink. If you did your research, you would have found that they really wanted to include female characters, and they were disappointed that they didn't make the cut.
So don't make it seem like ONLY females got the short end of the stick - they have a deadline to meet, and only limited resources. From a business standpoint, I think it was a smarter move to have more customization for males, rather than include males and females and only have half as many options for both. This is an FPS, who's biggest demographic are males, you as a female gamer should know and be used to it. If Brink was an rpg, well then I could see females being a bit more upset.

(dev forum post)

"In Saints Row 1, the devs didn't get female characters in, because, quite frankly, it's hard to get that stuff right, and when you're doing the first game of a franchise, and trying to get everything to work, you have to make compromises to get the game done.

Same things for Brink, unfortunately, as much as it pains us. But if Brink is a big success, and a sequel gets greenlit from Bethesda, we'll have the opportunity to get all kinds of new features into the game, including ones we wanted for Brink 1 but had to drop. And you can bet that female characters would be high on the list of want-to-have new features :)"

yes you are right about the Saints Row, but unfrtunately the second one had soo many new options that the graphics were worse than the first one, that one thing that cannot happen.

EA sports probably has more money. Maybe you should bug them into adding the WNBA into NBA live 11 instead.

*resists urge to make "Kitchen" comments*

I can empathise with you to some extent, it's horrible when a game doesn't represent something that you can relate to (most importantly your gender). Thankfully I am in the posession of meat and two veg - so I don't have a problem. Although I was deeply offended when they gave the Vindicare assasin and Imperial Guard Commander American accents in the DoW games. They're meant to have British accents!!!

Sooooo you're not playing a game you were excited for , because you can't make a female character? The customization in Brink is neat and all , but it hardly makes the game IMHO. Not buying it simply because in menus etc. etc. you'll see a dude instead of a girl is hardly a reason to not buy the game. Especially since it's an FPS where you'll only see your character in the before-mentioned menus and possible when you're dead...Then again , as a dude I guess I wouldn't know how it feels to always have to play the game as a member of the opposite six.

Yeah a lot of FPS's don't include female characters...CoD, TF2, CS, Battlefield for example.

Snip

So I must ask, what FPS do you play? Also, did you join our little community just to say you were not gonna buy this game?

You are overreacting... a lot. As said, its just an FPS. And by all means, when you don't want to see your character as man in the creation menus, simply put a hood over their head and make it look cool, then pretend its a woman within the ranks of your chosen faction. Were I a woman in this situation, that's what I'd do.

Yes, it svcks that woman get the short-end in a lot of FPS's. But its not something to really get bent out of shape about. Sure it svcks that you can't relate to the character on a more personal level, but who cares when you ONLY see them during little cut scenes and whatnot. Most FPS's have some kind of cool female NPC in them as well, which can represent a good strong woman among men.

Just get the game and have some fun with it, follow my advice about the hood thing, play with a mic as well. Maybe in some DLC or something there will be female skins and meshes made.

And as for that last comment in the OP - there's no need for childish behaviour. Asking for a comparison without pictures is just stupid anyway.

My moneys on yes, the OP did just join to post that and to never be heard from again. But I'm only basing that on how she ghosted out after starting the thread.

I really wish they had included female characters in Brink.

In thongs.

*sigh* Now I have to settle with running around with a Heavy male character in a thong. It just isn't the same...

Really? Then why did they just picked up "respawn enterprise aka the creators of Call of duty 1 2 4 and mw 2"
I suggest you do some research before typing next time.

www.hardocp.com or google and learn.

Halo's company (bungle) or whatever joined activision because the head "ceo of dev" stepped down from activision, why? because the company is going into turmoil... why? because
Infinity Ward staff sues Activision for up to $500 million........... why ? long story use google

I.W number 1 and 2 hunchos form the group I stated above and la de da...

so you are wrong.

And about chicks, dont get me wrong I love chicks, but who gives a [censored] if they are in a game or not? especially for a FPS - This is not a game like WoW where there is a "social area" to lounge in a room and talk for hours... get over it.. If you were a true FPS girl gamer you wouldnt cry over spilled milk.

Ya, she just came here to rant and be a child. She hasn't been on since 1:44 when she made this thread. The nerve and lack of maturity in some people really astounds me these days.

So if a mod could close this...

LOL "I want my WNBA. As a female sports fan, I am entitled to play as WNBA teams becuase NBA has males."

I am not female, and this is exactly the anology that is here right now. I'd rather have the company make better games rather than add features that almost no one would ever use. At least most of the females here would WISH they had a gender option, but they would still play the game regardless because they look past the gender options and go for the gameplay instead.

And Candace Parker rocks.

I predict the deletion of a few posts in here...

TC was a bit out of line, although her point was valid enough. Not that she cares, since she apparently made an account out of spite just so she could vent her misguided rage then leave and never come back...

Now for my .02 in this...

First off, I can understand her frustration over their not being an equal amount of gender representation. Look at it this way: alot of other online games have only males in them. The problem with that it...that's all they ever do. Game after game after game, they only have males in them. And that can be frustrating after a while for a female. You would think that in this day and age, there would be a bit more equal representaion in games for males and females. Now, for another look at it.

The game that springs to mind is Perfect Dark 64. Great game, pushed the N64 to its limits, and your characters were all female. Yet, when you played (at least for me) that never bothered me. They could be as rutheless as I wanted them to be, because they did what I wanted them to do, not what they wanted to do. And that goes for every game out there. Characters within a game only do what you tell them to do, and their actions are not restricted by gender. You play the character how you want, and thats all that. matters. When I plan any online game, I only see an enemy. Not a male, not a female, just an enemy. I also see what they can do (and in BRINK, thats a hell of a lot) and that defines who they are.

So, to summerize, I can understand her frustration about this. But also, you shouldn't let that get in the way of playing something you enjoy.

P.S.-Every girl I have played against in any online game has kicked my ass. And most of the time, they were a male character...
