One tip I like to give is to give one of your best arrows to a follower who uses a bow. This will litter the ground and corpses with a never ending supply of your best arrow. Occasionally, your follower will get inferior arrows stuck in their inventory by being shot at. You have to claim these arrows from them from time to time or they'll shoot the inferior ones rather than your best.

This is a very useful tip. I make use of this regularly.

Don't use followers, they ruin sneak and get in the way.
They are good for pack horses though, I tell them to wait here while I sneak and slaughter.

My archer never even uses a dagger or sword.
She uses the bow to bash an opponent in the rare cases that they get that close.

I do this too. If I'm gonna play an archer, I play a 'pure' one. Besides, bow bash looks kinda badass. :3

Advice from someone who has played nothing but archers for 400 hours:
  • if you like being even remotely challenged, don't take sneak. It's overpowered, it's repetitive, and just plain isn't fun unless you like one-shotting most opponents with no chance of being hurt.
  • you can choose a melee skill, but then you won't really be an archer. More like a warrior that starts off fights with a bow. To be a pure archer, you need a way to keep melee opponents at range. There are several ways to do this, from easiest to hardest:
  • take a companion tank such as Lydia. Extremely boring, and aggravating at times due to stupid pathing, but it works.
  • level up alchemy. Check every barrel and sack for salt piles. Travel to the Morthal marshes and pick every deathbell you can find there. Combine them to stockpile on slowing poisons. If you come across any high-HP melee opponents that can sprint, such as tough bandits, just imbue an arrow with this poison and sprint-kite them. The poison lasts for 30+ seconds even with a really low alchemy skill.
  • level up a magic school to help out. Illusion and/or conjuration are obvious choices.
  • sprint-kite melee opponents. With no slowing poison, this can be tough against sprinting NPCs such as bandits. Either outlast their stamina pool, which is dull, or run for some elevated position to exploit their pathing, which is cheesy.
  • if you go pure archer, then armor rating isn't very important, because if you're getting hit, you're doing something wrong. So always choose whichever armor pieces have the best enchantments.
  • the slow perks are a waste of points, unless you're using a thumbstick or your aim isn't very good.

I'm also playing an archer build (archery skill is at around 65) but I never picked up the perk for zoom in slow time, I don't really see the point, it will slow down time for both the enemy and my character.. so I only got the zoom in perk. But I agree that followers are helpful in the beginning, but sometimes I'd rather not have one and be a sneaky archer.

Right now, how I'm playing is that I'm only using bound bow, gives it a bit more challenge when I'm low on mana and forces me to maybe summon an atronach and go duel-wield with my dagger or something. I find an archer + conjurer is an interesting build to pursue, keeps me from doing melee attacks.

Also, no need to line up headshots (in the early going, especially).

In the early going, just aim for the largest part of the target. Damage will be the same no matter where the arrow strikes.

Aww, I was expecting more Expert Archery tips :o

Here's my tips on archery :D
Learn to be accurate with the HUD Opacity all the way down, or turn Cross hair off, but preferably HUD Opacity :)

Learn how to curve arrows (move in the direction you want to curve while shooting, curves more with Ranger perk on)

Learn when to curve arrows (move in the same speed and direction of which your target is and keep your Cross hair -just pretend you have one once your HUD Opacity is all the way down- on your target and shoot)

the rest of the useful tips are from that lady you find in the middle of now where that actually trains you (not like Faendals) in archery

Totally disagree. 'Steady Hand' means you can ambush a group of 6 or more enemies and put an arrow into each of them before they can touch you. I love using it against other archers. You can actually watch the enemy's arrow make it halfway towards you in slow-mo as you release your string and sidestep the incoming shot. Very powerful.

Couple things - you probably don't need the lvl 100 perk. Paralyze has a risk of making many enemies become inaccessible (like dropping behind objects for the duration) you also will likely be so powerful that you won't need to paralyze anything at this point.

Learn your enemies patterns, most melee fighters will move around a lot, except after a power attack and for a slight moment after a regular attack. If you wait for them to finish their stroke you can typically catch them before they move again.

Dragons seem to have some patterns as well - if they land on a flat surface expect a breath attack followed by a bite attack followed by another breath and another bite before take off. Once they take off, the first jump in the air will take them half the distance, pause for another flap and then finally take them fully airborne this provides for several shot opportunities. There's another opportunity for shots when they hover and use breath attacks. At 1/4th life whether airborne or otherwise they will only use ground attacks (Breath and bite) and won't take off anymore.

Mages will heal once below 1/4th health or so, providing you a break from cover to start shooting again.

Finally, followers have one incredible use that most people seem to overlook (?) they can be asked to pick up skill books for you so you can read them when you are ready.

Indeed! Like I said before, with this perk I'm able to drop 2 enimies before the third has taken 1-2 steeps, and as skooma_fiendsaid said you are able to track incoming arrows and avoid easily.

It slows you down as well, so you don't gain any advantage other than having more time to aim between each shot.

... Or sidestep an incoming arrow. Yes, I know it slows you down. That's the point. When the game slows down you have time to react.

If you hold it, but if you drop in and out you end up becoming the flash of knocking your bow, and if timed right while walking. Then the end result is the enemy being slowed down not so much you( unless you hold it and stay in for the duration of your stamina.)

Well I played the character over 10 hours so..

Honestly 10 hours isn't much. It took me over 28 hours to get to level 25 on my current warrior character. That's about the point where you really start getting a feel for a class. It takes having quite a few perk points before you really know what works and what doesn't.

For me a companion is a waste on a sneak character. They break stealth too often, attack when you don't want them too, and generally get in the way. They also won't drop combat once engaged making it very hard to slip off and drop back into stealth. Stealth characters are already the most powerful class in the game. I you need a companion to take something down you're not doing it right.

Since you're already focusing on sneak, Dual wield sneak attacks are way more powerful than going in standing up. Use archery when possible but if you want to go melee do it from stealth. Or just use your stealth roll to get out of range, drop back into stealth, and sneak back for another archery attack.

I will agree that later in the game, with the right perks and gear, standing toe to toe duel wielding is extremely powerful. Best to use dual swords for it though as they typically put out more damage face to face than daggers.

On the console it does help smooth out aiming using the stick. That's all I use it for.

All I can say is to use your bow every chance you get. You need to start leveling it ASAP and make sure you get at least a few perks in during the beginning of the game.

I've done this and have a question about adding points to the block tree. Do the initial points help blocking with a bow?

You don't block with a bow, you only bash. That said, I think the bashing perks actually do apply.
