Filling Grand Soul Gems - HowWhereWhat?

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 12:10 pm

Which mobs are best for filling Grand soul gems at character level 57?

I don't want to kill non-hostiles (I consider giants and mammoths non-hostile.).

I have several Black and Grand Soul Gems filled, but I'd like to fill more in the event I want to enchant more armor/weapons.

I have plenty of Greater and below for recharging - I just want to stockpile Grands for future enchanting endeavors. :P

Also, it appears that 'lesser' souls will go into 'greater' gems:

1) Is there any way to prevent this or is it purely a bug? <_<
2) Is the different value for a soul gem what indicates when a, for example, Grand gem has a Lesser or Petty soul in it? :o

Souls automatically fill the smallest available soul gem. If you have soul trap on a lesser soul, but onyl grand soul gems, they'll take the grand soul gem.

As for grand souls, there really aren't many. The only other "common" one are Draugr Death Overlords.

for the black, just find some bandits. for the normal grand, besides non-hostile, as mentioned there aren't too many options....

At level 50, most of the drauger are overlords. Mammoths are the only sure one I know about, but I think it's level based and the level needed is close to my level, so suddenly grand souls and greater ones are a lot more common.

if you want to change the soul in your soul gem....drop it. it is supposed to clear the soul gem.

just incase you find petty souls in your grand soul gems.

I don't recall offhand: who all sells soul gems? Mages and pawn shops? I don't think Alchemy shops sell them, right?

Mammoths have grand souls, and they are really easy to find.

Court mages sell soul gems, but the best place to get them is the college of winterhold.

All the merchants there sell them.

The only ones that sell black soul gems that I know of are Falion in Morthal and Enthir at the college.

The strongest of Draugr and Falmer (Deathlords and Shadowmasters, I believe) fill Grand Soul Gems, so you may want to find a few temples and Dwemer cities to kill some, finding them shouldn't be a problem at your level.

Edit: Court mages and general stores (like Belethor's in Whiterun) usually sell some soul gems, alchemists and blacksmiths don't. Not to sure about Khajiit caravans, but I believe they sometimes have them too.

Falmer Shadowmasters become very common above level 50ish, and they have a grand soul.

With the deathlords, I've found that only their boss variant gave me a grand soul. The normal deathlords just gave me a greater soul.

Will Ovahviing fly us back to Skuldafn after we've finished the MQ? I think most of the Draugr there were Overlords. :P

Nothing with a grand soul is really easy to kill, except humanoids that require black soul gems.

Grand souls come from enemies level 38+

Not all overlords are grand souls, most of them are greater.

The only overlords with grand souls are the ones with ebony bow and arrows, and those svckers hurt!

Have you done the quest for the Daedric Prince Meridia (the one where the reward is the Dawnbreaker)? The Corrupted Shades you fight inside the temple have grand souls, so that would be a source for quite a few if you haven't done the quest yet.

I don't think I have. I just gleaned the walkthrough and it doesn't sound familiar, but the Shrine of Meridia is white on my map. Hopefully, I just walked by it. The "Corrupted Shades" do not sound familiar so I may head to the Shrine. :P

I buy filled gems rather than messing with having a specific weapon or using the spell in the middle of combat.

Normally my wife will have 1 or 2 filled Grand or Great soul gems as well as some lesser filled gems.
I buy whatever filled gems she has available first, then sell off as much loot as she can buy.
By buying the gems first it gives her a bunch more money to buy my other stuff with.
In essence I am using her as a middleman to convert my loot into something more useful.

For me, much easier.

who's your wife?

Dragon priests fill grand soul gems but only human/humanoids fill black soul gems and they're always grand..also if you choose the black star it can be filled by any soul which is obviously a glitch but it works for me :)

If you did the quest you'd remember it - after you bring back the artifact that opens the dungeon for crawling, Meridia launches you way high into the air above Skyrim to talk to you. If you have the gems and the skill, there's no reason why you can't leave without 15-20 filled grand soul gems. It's a fun crawl, too.

Yeah, I keep forgetting to buy/sell from/to her.

Oh, yeah, I'm familiar with the 'see-saw' buying/purchasing loop from Fallout 3.

Edit: Sylgja

Yeah, I don't remember being in the sky so I'll go do that right now. :P

Thanks, again, y'all.

I prefer to not piss of azura (RP reasons), so Black souls arnt an option. As far as I can tell, the only common creatures that have grand souls are mammoths.

Get your bows ready, we're going on a big game hunt!

Sweet: got 19 Grand Souls (had the exact right amount (coincidence) of Grand Soul Gems and Azura's Star). :P

Meridia: ...and I'll bestow upon you my greatest reward.
Me: Damn, girl, you got thick thighs...what you got for me?

Well, I have Azura's Star - I didn't take the Black Star for RP reasons - and the humanoids I kill probably aren't big worhsippers of Azura. :P I figure that if I keep the souls of evil NPCs then the evil Daedric Princes don't get to strenghten their power by getting those NPC's souls. It's all very gray and complicated.

White grand soul gems: mamoths, some deathlords, some shadowmasters.. i think thats it really.

black soul gem: every godamn level 1 bandit!

the only problem is that very few merchants sell black soul gems and usaully only 1 at time. absolutely ridiculous.
