Starting my first character with Energy Weapons as his only combat tag skill. (Presumably no longer an issue after this new patch.) Blew all my ammo on shooting from afar at Giant Radscorpions, and got completely toasted as soon as I started meeting armored enemies who were able to actually shoot back.

And I'm puzzled by all the comments from folks who chose perks I find awesome on my more "optimized" characters, like VATS perks and Travel Light. I use VATS all the time, even with the accuracy penalty from Fast Shot. Just gotta quit and reload roughly once or twice every time I play to avoid crashing when I go into VATS or use a door. :-P

The only one I can think of is getting that one old lady to come to the dinosaur on a hunch. I was right, but the lack of proof made Boone angry. Boone pretty much told me to leave and never talk to him again. I reloaded a save after that.

I grabbed every Pre-War book I could find, thinking that there would be a turn in like in Fallout 3... Halfway through the game I still didn't find something to that effect. I carried 100 lbs of books for nothing.

This, definitely. I picked up a ton of junk in my travels, from pre-war books to lawn-mower blades, assuming they'd all come in handy some day. They never did.

The problem with VATS is that, even when properly perked and with max weapon skill, you're much more accurate out of VATS than in, particularly over long distances. You can't reliably hit anything from more than about ten yards away, whereas in real-time you can headshot people with unnerring accuracy from miles away.

Though now I think of it it is useful for fighting cazadores, they're just too quick to hit in real-time.

I trusted that many of the basic mechanics of the game would be the same as F3, with the differences being in improvements...hence I got a few new perks that were cr*p, the stock standards perks I took were gimped due to bugging, and taking a cautious approach through the game basically took away much of the challenge. Oh, and because I concentrated on combat skills rather than lockpicking and speech, I got jack diddly special items...

Bummer about the sheriff being the evil answer. I'm surprised as because of picking him Nash gives me a discount. He even says things are pretty good under Meyer.

All of the townspeople but Beagle...who Myers immediately sees right through and fires...love him. Probably the only people that consider him the "evil" choice are those who see him as an obstacle to the NCR or Powder Gangers plundering the town. I like Myers, he's very much a student of the Dirty Harry/Frank Hamer school of Law Enforcement....you try robbing, rapin', taking slaves or killin' decent folks in Primm and no fancy-pants Big-City bleeding heart lawyer will save you from getting what you deserve. Getting him out of NCRCF and installed in Primm is a early-game "must do" for me.

My biggest foul-up was with the Khans......

Spoiler
because I talked to Melissa and did her mission before I started "Oh My Papa" I ended up having to kill Papa Khan to complete the quest which ends up putting them on course to be used by the NCR like a Shake 'n Bake? bag.

"Hey look! Orange bloatflies!"

Says a guy with a varmint rifle in his hand. Didn't turn out well. Not in the slightest.

Also when I saw all the pre-war books lying around I thought "I'm gonna be rich!"

Wrong game pal.

Problems with my first playthrough:

- Hellbent on using Light Armor the entire game. Thought Medium and Heavy wasn't my speed. It took me over a hour and a half to finish Hoover Dam since this was pre-patch where they fixed the whole NPC slowdown deal.
- Attempting to make a "Balanced" character, SPECIAL wise.
- Assuming that Boobleheads were in the game so I set my Intelligence to 9 and compensated for just about everything.
- Destroying the Brotherhood Bunker *Not, once, twice, but three f'ing times on 3 straight playthroughs before I found out that I could get a truce*
- Taking Intense Training and thinking that there was a perk every level.

In the end, I ended up just picking w/e was "cool". No consistency really, missions left undone, etc.. etc.. but hey, I know I did one thing right: I used the All-American a lot.

There is implant, so you can go Int 10; but Int over 8 is a waste imo.

Useful when you have a clear head shot but RT targeting says otherwise.

I had no idea there was a PipBoy light and until I came to this forum...thus I spent many an hour cursing almost pitch black rooms while mousing slowly over areas to see if there was anything to pick up.

- Saw a Deathclaw, shot at it, got gangbanged by it and four of its buddies.
- Didn't stick to the roads at level 5, got owned by Cazadors.
- Let Ed-E hold onto Maria, sent him off to get fixed. No more Maria.

I mistook magazines for skill books and used about 10 as soon as I found them before wondering why they were so common.

THIS.

I let E-DE on my first playthrough as well hold onto about.... hmm, let's create a list shall we?
Annabelle
Oh Baby!
This Machine
Paladin Toaster
Pushy
Q-35 Matter Modulator
Alien Blaster
Gobi Campaign Scout Rifle
Pew Pew
Maria
Chance's Knife
Plasma Caster
All-American
C735 Avenger
3 Holy Frag Grenades
AER13 Prototype

And many other weapons. Those were just the uniques I lost my first time around.
I was testing something out with the Gauss Rifle, so I loaded E-DE up with all these weapons. Then when the quest came around, I gave it to the followers and then, all of it, gone.

I murdered him right afterwards. I was so enraged and sad. Ah, awful playthrough it was.
