First Play-Through Foul Ups.

Post » Wed May 11, 2011 2:02 am

I am pretty sure we have all gotten done with our first play-throughs, so now it is time to share what we did wrong in them! Basically, share your foul ups that you didn't intend to happen.

During my first-play-through, I promised myself to be strictly NCR. Murder all Legion members, and do everything the NCR way.
Well, what actually happened was I became Hated with the NCR. My first play-through wasn't anything like I had hoped for. I barely helped the NCR in any way, shape, or form, and to top it all off, I murdered one of the most important people of the NCR on accident. I did try and do things to help the NCR, and I did manage getting the NCR ending, but I never even was good enough to get the Safe House from Hsu.. Still, I just ended all of their lives and went to side with Yes Man.

I am though, doing an ACTUAL NCR playthrough my next time around. I know I won't make any of the same mistakes.

First Playthrough I pretty much went stupid and never checked my quest data in the beginning.

>Completes tutorial
>Goes to grave and sees Vegas while compass points south
>Goes to Vegas
>Death from pack of Cazadore.

Then when I reloaded, I tried to follow the quest path, and learned never doubt railroading.

I grabbed every Pre-War book I could find, thinking that there would be a turn in like in Fallout 3... Halfway through the game I still didn't find something to that effect. I carried 100 lbs of books for nothing.

I started doing that too, but when I had like 30 books just from Goodsprings I realized it wasn't going to happen and ditched them.

I actually was overall pretty happy with my playthrough, except I recruited the convict as Sheriff of Primm without realizing he was the "evil" choice. I missed some stuff, but reloaded to right before starting the final quest and finished it all, including every companion quest.
I had originally planned on putting melee weapons as my third tag, figuring with hardcoe mode I would be low on ammo for my Guns. Luckily I realized this wasnt going to be the case before leaving the Goodsprings area and was able to ditch that and get repair, which was an excellent choice as Hand Load ammo is beyond epic.

One small regret is I picked the option for Lily which ended up with the not-optimal ending. Not that big of a deal, but whatever.

Mine is quite similar to the Colonel's cept it was go to investigate a giant cross on a hill... thinking maybe I should not have shot all the bottles off the fence during the tutorial before running out of bullets and getting eaten by Rad scorpion...

I brought the wrong companions into the wrong places. I got fried with one of them and gave the NCR rabies with the other.

It's funny people say getting to the Yangtzee Memorial is so dangerious, and I only encounter the one radscorpion at the Memorial. In any playthrought its only been that one

Put STR to 1 like I used to in FO3 as I'm not much of a looter, I pick up only things worth 30+ caps and usually have a follower (which is all the carrying space you really need when you own a house). Having 1 STR was really bad for a guns based character... I didn't know STR affected your ability to aim with some ranged weapons...

Picked up bad perks because they sound good to a newbie, like quick-reload, 10% faster running etc.

Tried to kill things with dynamite *guffaw*, learned how gimped explosives were (especially when not specced in them).

Walked into the correctional facility not knowing what the heck a powder ganger was and got killed by like 20 dudes. (didn't stick around goodsprings long enough).

Accidently looted Ringo's ammo in his little house that is the only item in the room which turns him hostile... ended up killing him, lol.

Ran into a giant radscorpion and Victor ran up to me and got slaughtered... I ended up re-starting at that point, not yet knowing *SPOILER BELOW*

*SPOILER BELOW*

*SPOILER*

That he isn't exclusive to one robot. =P

that's all i can think of off the top of my head :)

Spoiler
Completing Gannon's quest without realising you lose him at the end of it.

And my last save was from a veeeerrryy long time prior, in the middle of a huge fight in the Fort.

Also, trying to get achievements without realising that using console prevents you from getting them in that game session. Had to go and re-do a lot of stuff after realising that >_< the EW damage achievement was a right pain in the butt.

Spoiler
Also using my favour with the King, just to join the Kings, instead of just using it to get him to cease violence with the NCR. If only I knew that joining them just meant an outfit I never wore!!

-Didn't bother to raise speech and was pretty pissed by the amount of speech checks in this game.

-Talked to Joe Cobb before talking to Ringo -> no happy end for Goodsprings

-took lots of VATS perks (like commando, sniper, grimreaper) and actually rarely used vats. (using vats = F3 habit )

-learned too late that u could make repair kits, i was furious about the tons of wrenches i left behind

- used energy weapons

Drift too far north (not all that far from the Abandoned Shack) and you run into a nest of them. Giant ones. Running back and hiding in the shack didn't help either. They just waited for me to come out the next day, and killed me as soon as I opened the door.

my first play through was actually pretty un eventful, found a useful leveling glitch, wound up starting off working for mr house then about mid way through switched and started working for yes man. didn't really care for the legion so i killed like 98% of them, wound up getting hated by the powder gangers so i didn't even bother going to the NCRCF to get that sheriff i just used the NCR for law enforcement in Primm. thats pretty much it with the exception of i'm severely disappointed with the lack of the game ending after the ending FMV like in FO3. i now have a char that cannot do the DLC when it comes out :(

Not realizing there were more than three options when answering the doctor when you make a character. Making him too general in attributes. Not fixing my character when I had the chance - when leaving Goodsprings for the first time. I would have swapped Melee for Guns. Maybe next time I can get to Vegas before 20th level. My guy is 19th and still hasn't made it there. If I could I would change his name to Wrong Way or ADD. "Hmmmm, let's go to Helios One and do that quest....what's that over there....What am I doing at Coyote Mine, I'm supposed to be at Helios One...Gotta unload all this stuff first...three levels later I reach Helios One. I also carry to many weapons choices. I may need this one day...so I have two pistols, a shotgun, a hatchet, a ripper (because it is cool), and a rifle I never use, just in case. Since I got the Chinese Stealth armor Ed-E is carrying the space suit just in case I come across radiation.

Bummer about the sheriff being the evil answer. I'm surprised as because of picking him Nash gives me a discount. He even says things are pretty good under Meyer.

I was on the the First Hour of New Vegas and I completed the battle and l looked at my map and put my marker on New Vegas and I went in "ScorpionLand" and found a Giant Radscorpion and I ran as fast as I could, I used Stimpaks, I saw Goodsprings!...Scorpion! Death! Battle! Ugly! But I managed to survive and I avoided that area until my second playthrough, when I had good weapons.

Not putting enough points in perception to begin with so I had to waste perk slots on Intense Training just to get my favourite VATS-related perks.

Building a VATS-centric character when VATS is all but useless in this game.

Thinking it'd be a good idea at about lvl 3 to snipe at off-road radscorpions for easy XP. Didn't work out well.

Explored way too many locations before being sent their by the relevant quest-givers, so I wound up having to re-visit places like the Repconn HQ, Vault 34 and Vault 22 multiple now-boring-and-empty times for various mcguffins.

No, it's all but useless because it still has some utility as a panic button when things get in melee range. If it weren't for that, it would be utterly useless. Hence, 'all but useless'.

Okay, seen some people saying that it's completely useless even if one goes for a VATS build.
Don't really use VATS so I wouldn't know.
