Flames effectiveness...

Niamh is currently level 30+ and uses flames all the time and very effectively too.
Enemies run away, cower in corners, scream about how it burns them, it's awesome.
Using an axe AND having a built-in flamethrower, you can't go wrong.

I seriously don't understand why you think it's rubbish.

This is what I envision when I am talking about using flames. I won't be taking the dual perks since I use a bow and weapon on switch. I guess the reason I'm focusing on flames is I don't plan on adding to magicka, taking any of the magic reducing perks, and I'm a terrible aim when I get rushed. Without enchanting or smithing (I will be taking arcane smithing to improve found armor and weapons) I don't think I will be able to get my casting costs down to effectively use the higher tier spells.....

Fire spells have the highest base damage and the lowest casting costs compared to Ice and Lightining spells. Additionally, the damage is incereased if the target is already hit by a Firespell. It makes then very effective agaist most foes.

Yes, but it is not like Soul Gems are hard to find in this game. Besides, how else are you going to get your Enchant leveled unless you re-charge your weapons a bunch of times? And, a couple of Enchant Perks make the Charge last even on a weapon where your not skilled in the magic school.
