Forsworn Briarhearts; Bethesda, you made me sick to my stoma

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 5:07 pm

I just noticed the reason why they have their name such. Holy crap. Ive fought about a dozen so far and didnt notice until now. My jaw dropped. Its rare for that to happen to me. I just didnt expect it.

Anyone else get floored when they saw it?

The actual Forsworn Briarheart NPC. Take a good look at them. You find out why they are named such. I didnt notice it until now.

I thought it was cool, I wouldn't say it floored me. It certainly didn't make me sick to my stomach. I suspected it right away when their name was Briar Heart and I could loot Briar hearts from them. I want a Briar heart because apparently it makes you have more health and generally just kick ass.

Naw, not really. I kinda like the "Olde Tyme Magick" they put into the game. Gives the Forsworn more depth.

Oh, by the way,

Spoiler
If you sneak up and successfully pickpocket a Briarheart's Briar Heart, they will insta-die.

Yeah...and the actual graphics change to where it looks like its been ripped out. Just graphic and visceral. Felt real. Blech.

I noticed it on the first one I killed and it did shock me a little. They're powerful mages, but I still don't know what magics they're using to maintain life while missing their hearts.

theyre called briarhearts, have briarhearts in their inventory, and die if you pickpocket it; why so surprised?

them having weird hearts shouldnt gross you out, its the image of you "pickpocketing" the heart out of their chests thats sickening.

Well, Im just used to generic names for npcs. Say, like, Bandit "Plunderer" or "Marauder". Those are just bandits that do more damage and are better geared. I assumed the same for Forsworn. Like, Forsworn Looter. Nothing really special.

Then I saw Briarheart. Thought it was just another name and didnt see it until now.

Thats also aside from the fact that I had to sit there and imagine what the consequences would be like if someone had an exposed heart in the real world like that. Ewww. Bad. Very Bad.

I don't know about floored exactly, but I was impressed. The Forsworn and the beings around them were very well done in my opinion. Excellent design, excellent touch of world building. I thought - good job Bethesda, really good job.

Wouldn't say I was sickened exactly, but it was suitably creepy to think of taking some guys heart.

I wish we could have joined them as a faction (maybe even as another main story faction if I didn't want to go Imperial/Stormcloak.)

Very much agree. I liked being introduced to this kind of magic and culture. Really adds something to the atmosphere. I wish there had been more interactions/content available for the Forsworn, the Hargravens etc. Join them as a faction like the guilds or something.

It was a bit of a shock to see after the body of my first dead briar heart turned over, but only because it was unexpected at that point in the game.

Whenever I do this, all I can think of is that scene from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom where the Priest of Khali rips the heart out of his sacrifice.

When I encountered my first Briarhearts I didn't notice the…hole and assumed the briar hearts I was looting were some sort of plant that they carried to show their status. Came as a bit of a nasty surprise when I learned the truth.

Especially after the escape from chidna(sp?) mine quest, lol. You only had contact with the forsworn leader, but I guess that isn't enough to join them.

Yeah, I think it's an awesome touch. So is the pickpocketing. And there's a place above Lost Valley Redoubt where you can find two hagravens performing the ritual to transform a guy into a Briarheart.

All of this overreacting to a creatures heart in a game where you brutally slay humans, demons and willdlife alike is the only thing that's making me sick to my stomach.

heck, I had no idea.

I just killed one on my last quest, but I never noticed. I have never turned one over on their back. They are always lying on their stomach when killed. And I had no idea exactly what I was collecting when I looted their bodies. I have a collection of "briar hearts".

Well, they're extremely powerful mages who can rapid-fire ridiculous ice and lightning attacks that do hundreds of damage, so maybe the briarheart makes their magic stronger?

They need to add a unique kill animation for the pickpocketing I think - something like that guy from Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom that rips hearts out of peoples chests.
