Really? Most of the time it comes down to people looking for flaws in people, and then, that they enjoy pointing them out to feel less concerned over their own flaws. It is simple human psychology. Especially when trying to make sense out of a 9 year old's wall of text. What people forget is that they ARE children and should be given more leeway in that department. Simple helpful suggestions help a lot.

I bold most, because some people are genuinely going to try to help out of a concern for the other person's bad grammar. If english is not their native tongue then it is nice to correct them politely imo. However everything in moderation.

Insecure people look for any way to feel superior, correcting English one of those ways. All trolls are as a rule insecure and look for the validation of getting a rise out of you, so simply don't give them that validation and the trolls whither up and die. Guys from now on whenever a teacher is trying to do an algorithm or a math problem and he/she makes a mistake and it is noticeable, don't correct the professor.

sometimes lack of punctuation is appropriate (as is spelling) to represent the way the typer speaks (such as i hardly ever stop to breath if i actuall get into a conversation) and accent (i am from the south, not that it reflects my typing much, other than trying to sound smarter than i really am sometimes )

You could consciously replace ending 'g's with an apostrophe instead, spell nuclear and nu-cu-lear and throw as many "ya'll"s in a sentence as much as possible to keep in character

I would think that people would want to make a good impression, rather than coming across as uneducated or incoherent. But, then, I went to school before the whole "ignorant = cool" trend came about. Still don't understand that one.

Why do so many people care about punctuation and grammer for forum post?? These aren't essays... they are supposed to be free flowing conversations. But if you have a post that isn't pretty much edited by your college english professor people always troll the heck out of you. This coming from people that use twitter and text where its basicially pigeon english?? I just don't get it.

Basically because if a forum is supposed to be a free flowing conversation like you said, it flows best when we can all understand each other. I agree some people take it too far with flaming and just being "Grammar Nazis" but if you want to look at least halfway decent here or anywhere a little spelling and grammar can't hurt.

Besides, it's something that anyone who goes to school gets pounded into them for 10+ years. Even people in elementary school can use proper sentence structure and spelling. On that note, this is not in the right section.

I actually appreciate it when people correct me on my grammar.

I don't judge people who aren't as cautious about their grammar as I am, but I do understand the people who are bothered by it.

It only really bothers me when it's obviously not out of laziness or a typo, but instead pure ignorance...

I don't correct people for their screw-ups, but I want to be coherent, and do my best to convey whatever it is I'm trying to say in the clearest way possible (kind of the point on a forum, no?). I won't read a post that's ridiculously bad, even if I don't comment on it, and bad grammar/spelling/punctuation makes me cringe if it's any more than sparse typos. Also, I love using my semicolon; we've been through a lot together.

I'm an editor by trade, but I don't bother correcting people online unless they're being comically hypocritical, like, "Ur grammer suks." As long as a post is understandable, I take no issue.

It's escaping the internet... My wife has received some truly astounding letters from supposed medical and legal professionals in the course of her employment.

The bare fact is, On the net, generally the only information people have to judge you by... is what little you've typed into this box. I grew up with a bunch of ancient big/swing band musicians, and they were writing new music up until their deaths. Many of them could barely spell, but their genius was truly expressed in the mathematics of Music.

If you present yourself as an utter illiterate, people will treat you as such. If someone is nitpicking because you typed too quickly and transposed letters in "teh", Yes, that is being a jerk.

If someone cannot even separate their thoughts into distinct masses, allowing others to actually absorb the information being presented... they need to pick up a copy of "Elements of Style" Strunk and White.

I understand the love for the semicolon; I would use it at the end of every sentence if I could.

Doesn't "communication" necessarily require others to be able to understand you? So why do some people attempt to participate in communication when not even making the effort that others may be able to understand what they are writing? I generally don't care. However, your post needs to be legible and easily understandable. If people have to squint or work twice as hard to figure out what you're trying to say, then I think you need to work on your spelling and grammar. The occasional typo is completely fine, but remember that the forums are for communicating with others - if your spelling and grammar hinders your communication, then what's the point of posting at all?
