Forum Grammer & punctuation?

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 9:27 am

Pretty much like smithing or tying your shoelaces, learning to write well involves practice. I'm sorry OP doesn't feel any need to better herself or himself, but making an attempt at writing better each time you post, at trying to make sure your point is clear and understandable, means using the writing rules that have been found to work. Is a lot of it silly? Hell yeah. But, it's also transparent, something grammar plagued entries are not.

I don't think this thread belongs in this forum.
Weird I thought it was a General Discussion forum....

I dont normally point out mistakes, but when someone makes a post that calls someone else stupid and I think it's uncalled for then I might be tempted to show that person just how weak they are themselves. Not saying this about OP, but just saying.

Your spelling somehow made me hard.

Wow I wish I had whatever job you currently have if grammar is extremely lenient in your workplace.

Ever considered, that perhaps some arent native speakers? Some of you, are bloody arrogant to be honest. Perhaps this thread should've been about, why on earth people are so narrowminded, to care about spelling on a international forum ?

I'm not a native speaker. I'm just amazed by all the bad english speakers/writers. I sometimes fail my grammar when writing, but at least I try.
It seems like some people just don't want to write properly.

Why do so many people care about punctuation and grammer for forum post?? These aren't essays... they are supposed to be free flowing conversations. But if you have a post that isn't pretty much edited by your college english professor people always troll the heck out of you. This coming from people that use twitter and text where its basicially pigeon english?? I just don't get it.

You my friend are talking about Forum Nazis...

Honestly the issue is not that this is an international forum, most of the non native English speak with a "How dO GraMmer?!?!!11." style anyway. I mean seriously I don't believe that you need to speak English, but if you are coming to a mostly english native forum you would think that you would have an basic enough understanding to tell what I am saying even when I make run on sentences like, this one with the comma in the wrong Spot. and no need for the capitalization or lack thereof on some of the words. alsowhydoesitmatteryouobviouslygetwhatpeoplemeanbecauseyoualwayscorrectwhattheysay.(thatisDIRECTEDAT for um nazisss)

As long as it's comprehensible, I don't really care. Alot of people on these forums are from anywhere BUT english speaking countries, myself included.

ONE thing though. Not so much on these forums, but the internet in general... THEN and THAN!! Oh my god those words get abused so badly, it makes me wan't to cry...

Some people do not necessarily find Twitter or text abbreviations acceptable, either. And these are supposed to be free-form conversations in English. Some people find it offensive or confusing when a post is beyond all saving. If I can't understand the point you are trying to make because of incorrect English, it makes the forum less effective.

Plus, sometimes I put it in there just so maybe I can be the person to help someone understand the difference between 'there', 'their', and 'they're'. I know it's unlikely if they've come this far, but it can be pointed out with kind intentions of helping someone improve their English. It's not all "you forgot an apostrophe, you must be an idiot".

Foreigners do English better than natives though; at least with written English.

Using proper spelling and grammar helps people understand what you're trying to say. However, nitpicking about typos and minor mistakes is asinine.

Pretty much this. I don't care about the occasional typo or grammar mistake here and there, especially since this is a multi-national forum where many users aren't native English speakers (although I often find the non-native speakers have better grammar than native speakers), but if I can't understand a word of what the person just tried to type, I'm going to let them know about it so I can actually respond to what the person had to say.

It bothers the heck out of me to reread one of my posts and find I've misspelled a word....that's why I like that we can edit posts.
It doesn't bother me that much when I see others do it.

I can see that you are trying hard here to be precise and correct in your writing. I think maybe you are trying too hard. That semi-colon is a dead giveaway. Too much sizzle with no steak.
What's wrong with semi-colons? I use them often; it's nothing to do with proving a point, I just like having an array of punctuation to choose from. Edit: whether or not I use them correctly is, of course, another matter entirely...

I svcked at English back in school and it took me up until my 2nd/3rd last year before I fully got to grips with using it. I'd have sentences that lasted full paragraphs. :P
I don't mind bad punctuation but sometimes its annoying reading a post where the OP doesn't seperate stuff with commas and full stops. Grammar however annoys me something awful, not internet randomers, but talking to a friend who just can't grasp how to put a correct sentence together, even when telling him not to reply until he has checked spelling etc but he still sents incoherent rubbish. :ahhh:

Do this often, it enrages me ^

Or laik speekin' laik dis, its very hard 2 anderstand wut am sayin' nao, rait?

Those who write like that example could at least try to be understood :D Typos happen to everyone all the time, I often write abuto instead of about and notice it only after I posted my reply, which means most of my posts are edited.
