FPS Drops after updating to 1.5

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 8:51 am

Before the patch, everything was running smoothly at 45fps with dual nvidia gtx 260s with SLI, and a fps limiter to prevent slowdowns (I can actually run the game up to 60 fps, but any drop in fps causes too much of a slowdown for me to deal with). With the new grass shadows, fps drops down to 30 in areas with a lot of grass, trees, etc. I have the grass distance slider set to full and shadows on high. Moving the shadows down to medium didn't help. On the skyrimnexus forums someone suggested I try setting my bDrawLandShadows in the prefs ini to 0. I couldn't do that as it was already at 0. I set my fps limiter even lower to 40 and it's still dropping like a rock. I'm kinda pissed off that this was forced on us. I had shadows set to high instead of ultra for the very reason they make such a large impact on performance. My game was at the perfect "sweet spot" in terms of performance and graphics. Now this patch comes along and screws it all up. I really just want to get things back to the way they were before 1.5. I've heard that rolling back to previous patches will cause problems with saves. I really don't want to take that risk right now. I'm also surprised that there are very few people with the same problem. Has anyone tried walking through heavily forested/grassy areas ingame? I guess these would include the tundra outside Whiterun, the forests outside Riften, and the area surrounding Morthal. Test that out and monitor your fps in those areas. Before 1.5, I DID get slowdowns in those places, but nothing as drastic as this...

While you give a lot of information in your post, you are not giving away useful stuff like a DXDIAG. Also keep in mind that Skyrim often screws up in detecting your graphics card after a patch, so you have to delete your .ini files and start over.

Hi, I believe im having the very same issue as you, I also have the gtx 260 card but only one and not sli. I did (as usual) a full re-install of Skyrim and this did not seem to change the situation any better. With the 1.3 and 1.4 patch / and latest nvidia drivers (260.10) I have had the nicest performance but now with 1.5 it gets sometimes slow as 30fps around the tundra area (and similar with lots of grass), when it used to be 50-60. Also some sort of stutter occurs when rotating the camera. I have tinkered with the shadows by setting them to zero from the ini but this did not change the fps for me, since I already play on shadows set to low. Havent tried different Nvidia drivers yet since latest are supposedly Skyrim-optimized, which means they could actually be only 1.4 patch optimized

I don't think its having any trouble detecting my graphics card. I'm still getting the same performance I did before the patch in places without grass. As soon as I enter an area with a lot of it, I get hit with the fps drop. I'm really just looking for some kind of way to disable the new shadows on grass. It's obvious to me that it's causing this. My pc couldn't handle shadows well before 1.5, so I had them turned down. When I would try to move them from high to ultra, I would get the same fps drop as I'm getting now. Nvidia drivers are up to date too.

Here's my DXDIAG:

I can confirm that my game is correctly detecting my gpus, and that SLI is enabled. My FPS loss is definitely occurring when I'm in places where the new shadows show up on a large amount of grass. Honestly, I'm not really seeing many people with this problem, only two or three people so far. Perhaps it is limited to the 200 series cards. My gtx 260s have always seemed to have trouble with shadows, not only in Skyrim, but many other games as well. Would anyone know anything about this?

Are you still getting significant FPS loss with a 100% vanilla game (ZERO mods, disable all of them) and freshly generated INIs?

Does FPS drop appears as soon as you look at fire? I have random (because of unknown cause) fps drops with 99% GPU usage. Mostly fps drops starts in homes/shops with fire and then fps drop may proceed outside. Weird. I can save game, quit Skyrim, load it again and there will be no fps drop, well, for some time. This thing behaves like memory leak, gpu memory is not used more than 1300 (1536 avail.) and not more than 3.5~3.6 gb of ram (4 gb ram).

This thing behaves like memory leak, gpu memory is not used more than 1300 (1536 avail.) and not more than 3.5~3.6 gb of ram (4 gb ram).

I've had similar problems. I pretty much fixed any fps issues with fire by using an fps limiter. For example, before I used the limiter, my fps was topping around 60. When looking at fire, it dropped down to about 45-50. When I set the limiter to only allow fps to top at 45, I no longer had any fps issues relating to fire, as it was the sudden slowdown from 60 to 50 frames that caused the lag. This allowed me to have smoother gameplay. I can do the same here with these new grass shadows causing a fps hit, however they bring my fps down so low, it's really not a practical solution.

Are you still getting significant FPS loss with a 100% vanilla game (ZERO mods, disable all of them) and freshly generated INIs?

I honestly haven't made any changes to my INIs, and I'm not using any mods that would have an affect on them. Also tried disabling all mods too. It helped save 2 or 3 frames in bad areas, but fps is still dropping way more than it did before the patch in these spots. I had some texture replacer mods I had to manually remove too, they were installed before I started using the NMM.

I'm going to try removing my INIs anyway and see what happens.

Are you guys sure this drop in FPS isn't due to the changes Bethesda did to how the shadows react with the grass now?

I'm pretty sure that is causing the drop. Not certain, but I can't really find any other reason this could be happening.

Without texture packs I had fps drop much less compared to have texture packs installed and fps drop was not that hard like with texture packs but still fps drop exists. This happening after loading screen when entering or leaving home/dungeon/building.
Right now I'm enabling/disabling them to find most problematic one for me.

/offtop: anyone has skyrim freeze right after fast travel or loading screen?

Should probably just let this thread die, but just wanted to do one last update and say that the latest mini-patch didn't do anything in terms of helping fps. Still hoping for some way to disable the 1.5 grass shadows.

One thing you can try to gain FPS for now: if you have Ambient Occlusion (AO) enabled in the Nvidia control panel, disable it. I don't know if it counts for everybody, but for a lot of users AO is not there anymore in Skyrim since the 1.5 patch, eventhough it's enabled. Disabled in Nvidia there is no difference to be seen in the game but fps increases a lot.

Couldn't run AO before the patch, it would drop my fps by 20-30 frames in some areas. Interestingly enough, it was AO's effect on the grass/shading that did it. I'm not really sure why my system has so many problems with rendering grass/shadows.

No way man, this is a real issue. I have a 285GTX and have the same exact problem you describe. "Features" like these that drop fps so dramatically should not be forced on users without giving an option to turn them off. Maybe it is an issue only with certain cards (e.g. nvidia 200 series) but that's no excuse for them not to fix it. Right now I've gone back to a 1.4 exe and my fps shot way back up in areas like the Rift. I certainly don't plan on starting Steam in online mode until I see this issue has been addressed.

If that's the case, then I'm guessing the problem should be brought to nvidia. I doubt Bethesda tests their latest patches with the 200 series cards XD

Someone said that grass shadows could be turned off in the skyrim ini by setting bShadowsOnGrass to 0 under display. I tried it and it didn't do anything. If anyone else that's having problems with fps and grass shadows could try this, please tell me what the results are.

Is the 1.5 update a bad idea for low-spec machines?

What's the verdict?

It depends, are you planning on running your game with a couple of mods installed? If you run it with just plain vanilla or with little to no game-behaviour changing mods..then you'll be fine. Still I find there are no guarantees of running into problems with, or without mods.

Could someone verify if setting bShadowsOnGrass to 0 works for them or not?

Doesn't work for me. Shadows are still there on grass.

I just wanted to chime

Also does not work for me. I think the tweak is defunct. It may actually be working for some people, but I'm doubtful.

Under Display in the Skyrim.ini? Tried to put it anywhere else, like Gameplay?

I tried under the [Display] of skyrim.ini and skyrimprefs.ini. I could try it in Gameplay, lemme see.
