Frame Rate Limiter Microstutter Fix

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 12:59 pm

I'm not here to start a fight. I'm here to help people. If you don't need help, that's fine. The framerate limiter has worked with great success for many people as has SBW, and I have hope it can help many more. Even if you don't think you have the issue, many people have been surprised at the result. Sometimes you don't realize how bad something is until you see how good it can be.

Not trying to fight either. I'm just trying to point out a few things, is all.

I tend to get a bit carried away at times, though. :P

Regardless MSI Afterburner(beta yes use the beta it is better) is something everyone should be using...assuming you don't have one of the few cards that are not compatible with it.
Whether fps clamp is why or not it is a great monitor and GPU controller. I tend to not use the Riva Tuner OSD Server at all but the application itself works wonders at keeping my card(that was designed to be quiet over cool) under 85 Celcius tops as opposed to sitting at much higher(referenced safer but still) temps. SBW saves my day in Skyrim not because my card is crap or my CPU but because some aspect of the game is not using my system to its max without being in windowed mode.

In short the moral of the story is(and I read these forums enough to say this with pure confidence) no fix works for everyone....experimentation and trial and error is your best friend.

PS I love raging Kermit

Maybe not in this thread but from living on these boards it is the most popular FPS limiter fix for Skryim...hands down. I would never ever boot a game without MSI Afterburner it is amazing on so many levels....that FPS clamp was added for Skryim specifically now that is some dedication to the gaming world...<3 MSI.

Dxtory takes second place.

Seriously! MSI added the fps specifically for Skyrim? Where did you read that! That's amazing.

Call it an educated guess the newest beta came out shortly after the issue arose. If you frequent Guru 3D there are tons of Skryim threads from people that make my rig look like a joke. They are the brainchildren behind the app so you can assume they were tired of the issues and got proactive right away.

I shall call it an educated guess as requested. So much like I claimed in my OP, this fps limiter not only fixes the Skyrim microstutter bug for many people especially with high end hardware (where the issue is most prominent), according to you that is the exact reason it was created!

Yep the amount of Skryim/TES fans is massive...aside all the issues. Few games would inspire community support on such a mass level.

I thought I was doing this before with RadeonPro by limiting the refresh rate to 59Hz, but looking back, that still doesn't properly cap the framerate. This has helped alleviate the microstuttering issue quite a bit; I wonder what it is with Bethesda's games and having issues with rendering at proper intervals. Either way, this small fix is a major step in the right direction! I still seem to be experiencing some stutter when in first-person mode and when looking down or navigating an indoor area. It's much less of an issue than it was before, although it's still there. I thank you for this fix, but I am wondering if anyone else is still experiencing first-person stuttering (minor though it may be). I'm wondering if it may be an AMD-related issue at this point. The game still won't use more three or more GPUs in CrossFire - dual-GPU systems are notorious for microstutter.

I get the stutter. I sometimes get the frame "skip" when out in the open, that Oblivion suffered from, but Skyrim isnt as bad. This is not very often.

I always get the horrible stutter in certain locations, in certain light, in certain caves looking at walls etc only in first person.

Having DXtory just open in the background fixes most of it, limiting fps does not.

SBW fixes it completely, but I lose 5-10 fps in some places.

I am getting my new GTX 570 today. I've uninstalled my AMD driver and used driver sweeper to clean out old display driver files.

When I install my new card, I'll post to say if I still get the stutter, and what fixes it if anything :)

By using a third party frame-rate limiter set to 60fps, the notorious microstutter/frame skipping in your engine is completely fixed! There are still regular fps drops, but the microsttuer is completely ironed out, and the game engine behaves as it should.

Frame-rate limiters do not seem to help with 120hz monitors. I'd get 120fps everywhere with vsync on, giving ultra-smooth turnings etc but the physics breaks and water and animals/NPCs textures flicker and displaces. Tuning down to 60fps (stays constantly) I see and feel an awkward micro-stutter giving almost head-ache to watch. I can go up to about constant limited 85fps before the flickering issues starts again, but that does not differ much from 60fps. I have seen no fixes/suggestions to this. Running with simple borderless windows does not help, nor any adjustments to shadows or other ingame settings. And this happened with my previous GPU Nvidia GTX 580 as well.

just thought I'd add: fps limiter does nothing for me, and SBW did nothing AND added screen tearing. The only thing that fixed my microstuttering is D3DOverrider forced triple-buffering! Just wish MSI would let the author add it to Afterburner so I don't have to have so many apps running in my system tray - I read a post that he offered to add the function but MSI weren't interested :(

I guess what I'm saying is everyone's system is different, and therefore different fixes work on different systems...

Well guys as promised I've come to give my results. After upgrading to my GTX 570 I get absolutely no stutter. The odd "hitching" every few seconds outdoors is gone. The horrible stutter in certain areas only in first person is completely gone. I'm thrilled.

A few changes to my pc for you guys, may help.

Obviously I've gone from AMD 6870 to Nvidia GTX 570.
No longer have Radeon Pro (obviously lol).
I did a clean install of drivers. That's uninstall AMD, reboot into Safe Mode, run Driver Sweeper and removed all trace of AMD Display drivers. Ran ccleaner and cleaned the registry. Rebooted into normal windows and installed Nvidia.
Only installed Display, HDMI Audio and PhysX.

Nvidia CP 3D settings are default, except display is set to single performance, and power management mode is set to maximum.

I deleted ini files and renderer, game generated new ones, and before I launched the game I added my tweaks: mouse smoothing off, map tweaks needed for map mod.

The fix could have been any one of those things. Could just be the gpu.

If I think it's smooth, then it is smooth.

The point I'm making is that you're blowing this out of proportion a bit. Even if it is in everyone's game, it doesn't exist for everyone as not everyone sees the same things and has different perceptions of what is going on.

It's smooth on my end. Simple as that. I don't get any sort of stuttering or other issues. There's no point in using a fix for a problem that doesn't exist.

It exists.

It existed in New Vegas too. The fix there was someone made a utility that forced the game to use a high resolution system timer (if I recall).

In Skyrim I have to use an FPS limited. It's annoying that this bug has not been fixed. Really annoying.

I use Bandicam to limit the FPS.

I get LOD and stuff loading late due to it (apparently), but at least the game is smooth.

Maybe someone can figure out that timer thing for Skyrim too. I don't know what the problem actually is.

Edit: I finally got around to trying the "Simple Borderless Window" utility because everyone kept talking about it and that fixed it. If I recall that is pretty much the same sort of fix I had to use for New Vegas. Duh. Why didn't I try it sooner? There's still something Bethesda hasn't fixed, but at least I can play the game smoothly without LOD problems now.

This did not work for me.

I've been having mass microstuttering since day 1. My fps is always at 50-60.

I got 2 of the AMD 6870's and have been considering a change in GPU for a while. I am looking up the one you got and found a 2 GB one for 370 bucks. Is it worth the money?

Also, did the MSI thing, and it doesn't seem to be limiting my FPS. It still shoots over 60 in certain areas.

Can't speak for the FPS clamp never had to use it got that 60 hz monitor figured this was gonna happen ahead of time. It is a great application for everything else though....also that is a new feature in the Beta(you are using the Beta right?) so maybe they get it right in the official release.

Just wanted to say that after looking for other options on how to remove the stupid microstutter and finally trying out this one, I can't be any happier. This FPS limiter has completely removed my games microstutter and now it runs as smooth as silk!

No offence to the OP but this has been discussed to death in this forum already.

It's worth reiterating that if you're using nVidia then you have a perfectly good frame rate limiter available to you via Inspector (as long as your drivers are up to date). I use this one, as well as triple buffering via D3DO.

Stop trolling and let us focus on topic. If you don't suffer from stuttering don't reply in this thread it's such simple. For me game become unplayable after upgrading to 1.5 and I don't know any other game with such problems.
