Still doesn't remove the indelible issue of the lack of resources. How can tress grow, how can fruit grow? What is left for humanity to start over with?

Gotta remember, technology went from space age, to stone age, in a few short hours. Space exploration can only be undertaken with a HUGE industrial capacity, and infrastructure to support it. For a good long time, after the war, day to day survival was far more important than ANYTHING else. Only the strongest survive.

Granted, we have come a VERY long way in the last 100 years. However, that was a (relatively) healthy, developing, society. Now, remove ALL the artificial supports for that society, and it does indeed collapse. Rebuilding is going to be a slow, and tedious process, and the roadblocks involved are much more difficult to overcome.

Well low resources for an America with 500 million people but after the war the population would only be a few hundred thousand. The popluation since the great war is mostly likely a couple million. NCRs population in 2240 was 700,000 it could be close to a couple million now (New Vegas)

America before the great war was working on new power sourses. They cracked cold fusion and were building solar power. With alot less people there is enough to go around.

Again, which still lies the question. Knowing the amount of technology that was lost.. how could you possible consider rebuilding? How could it possibly be worth the dangers? No medicine... wouldn't that fact alone lead to an extra amount of deaths? The radiation would kill even after the nukes. The wind carrying the radiation to other locations. How could there possibly be stability?

EDIT: Oh, I even forgot mutation. Genetic mutation would be huge. The only thing I could think of is if over the years, people just started to adapt. Wouldn't it just be beneficial to become a ghoul? Radiation would be a benefit!

Of course, the game/s assume that the US Southwest coast was not attacked in the nuke strikes. In reality, I would consider that California would be glazed considering the military infrastructure and population centres there.

If someone modded that into a weapon, it would undoubtedly be the best Fallout mod of all time.

Is there even any information on New York? What happened there? Are there even buildings left?

Of course there are. They just aren't real useful as buildings any more. :D

After the first few decades things would be very bad. FO1 takes plase 84 years after the great war and things were not that good. People rebuilding but it was more like DC, no central power running things and no real new buildings. As time goes on people start to rebuild. NCR becomes the main power in California. They find pre-war info on how to rebuild. Other factions like the SHI are very advanced. Not all Vaults were meant to be exparements. Also Vaults were not the only means to survive. Military bunkers, personal bunkers and shelters. All would have pre-war info in them.

Yes, but technology in and of itself does not bring stability, nor is tech required for a "stable" society. Compared to today, people living in the 1700's and 1800's were primitive by our standards. Yet they thrived. (for example the 13 American Colonies and early nation)

Without the technology, you resort to the basic things that people used for more centuries than we have used technology. They worked then, and they will still work today if it all fell apart. And given the brutal history of mankind, it's a very likely if not probable we will have to use the old school methods again one day! (maybe sooner than later?)

But back then, there weren't as many diseases and illnesses that are present today.

Hardly, the diseases were all around then, with the exception of more modern strains. The only disease we got rid of was smallpox (I think).

On the whole, western civilisation suffers from less disease now than we did 200 years ago.

Sorry, but there were MORE back then! Modern medicine has all but eradicated many, many diseases that in the past were almost certain death.

Thats not 100% true many diseases of the past are still around its just we have treatment and vaccinations. The disease is still out there in its host species. If anything there are more diseases out now then back in 1700s. Diseases that mutated and changed to deal with our attempts at fighting them.

From a Fallout sand point there could be small pox and other disease like New plague out there due to buildings that housed them and did research both to find a cure and to weaponize would be damaged allowing them to get out.

Edit: The Sierra Army Depot in FO2 housed many deadly bioweapons and they were in cryogenic stasis. Wright Family could have got their hands on them or more likely NCR.

What about so called "Super mutants" and "Ghouls" and all the evil sadistic people? Couldn't people get killed by them? It certainly wouldn't be very easy for humans to reproduce again. Unless they all joined together and attempted to survive. There would still be a lack of medication and food. What about water?

EDIT: Made post more clear.

Super Mutants will die out at some point, cant have babies. Humans can't get sick from a super mutant and become one if that's what you are asking. As long as there is alot of Radiation there will always be ghouls.

All of this, it's really just a matter of when? Isn't it? Ready to unfold. I like politics, always interested me to a certain extent. Would there really be vaults ready for the citizens? The government has bunkers stocked with food and medicine for years. An EMP could devastate the entire continental United States. Iran for example, just for [censored] and giggles. Hundreds of millions dead? That's the part that's scaring me. No body is prepared for it, there would be panic, starvation, no co-operation, anarchy, disease. There would be no medicine, diabetics, all people undergoing surgery, people on life-support, all dead. Society would crumble as would many other nations as a result. Maybe China? They could EMP us, knowing the possibly outcome, EMP all of Europe as well, nonchalantly and secret of course. Could do it from a ship, no symbol or identification.

One ship in the Mexican Gulf and one in the Mediterranean. Once they've EMP'ed Europe and the U.S. They can wait a little while, then send some aid, help rebuild, etc. They'd bring troops of course, plenty of them. They'd claim they were helping to aid and they would do a lot. Would the troops and doctors and all of those people leave? Of course not, they would stay. They would stay and take over North America. What's to stop them?

You say an emp but this isnt MW2 all we really know about the emp tech are the grenades and mines.you said there would be panic, starvation, no co-operation, there was.and yes a lot of people saw it coming.everyone saw it as a certainty.and some people prepared for it like with vaults.about what you said before.how would other countries help us,and why?what countries that still existed it was mainly china and the US and the other countries(i think it was mainly smaller euro countries)were to intersted in their own war effort and they wouldnt be interested in an alliance.that laser was developed by posideon energy which i dont think was working for the govenment, even so its power usage must be insane and on the game could only be used once a day.and that guy behind the computer wasnt protecting all of the united states he was protecting a very small portion of vegas, and bombs still hit all around the very small vegas strip.and also people do kill everyone to survive even vegas which is one of the more stable wastelands has a lot of raiders imagine what places were like a little time after the war.one thing i agree on though is the abundance of pre war food.if you know your fallout history people were starving there were food riots all over the country but here in the wasteland its everywhere even after 200 years of it being scavenged.

This concept of an EMP has nothing to do with MW2. EMPs are definatly a threat. The laser im talking about has nothing to do with ARCHIMEDES. There is a weapon developed by the US that can shoot a laser at a middle to disarm it. Read about EMPs, they're interesting. Not just related to mw2 like most people think. We know a lot of information on EMPs. I hate when my words are misconstruded.
