From An anolytical Standpoint...

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 12:18 pm

Before I say anything, I'm not doing this to solicit an annoying response. I'm doing this to look at this game from a realistic point of view, rather than just a "video game". Quotes because it'll happen eventually . To begin, this whole story doesn't add up.

If this had actually occurred, wouldn't we get aid from other countries? Also, the United States has that laser in space that can shoot down nukes, how would they possibly get through. Seriously, a guy on a computer can do a better job than the United States government?

I don't know if anyone has ever read the book One Second After by William R. Forstchen, but that book depicts the imagine of what society would be like should a nuke come, if not worse. People would be killing everyone to survive, like "The Posse" in that book. Animals would be killed for food and there certainly wouldn't be such an abundance of pre-cooked food like there already is..

I have much more but I will leave it at that so I can hear yours.

Oh, and, I love :fallout:

You're forgetting that the Enclave was WANTING a war on that scale to happen.

Global Thermonuclear War is just that, Global. Even now, after stock pile reductions, we have enough Nukes to char the entire surface of the planet. With Armed Services Bases all over the world, most every place would have to be targeted to some extent. So, other countries would be dealing with their own issues and welfare.

As for any Star Wars thing, even in this game, that weapon can only be shot once a day. I can't see any military only sending over one nuke a day. The Star Wars system that was envisioned back in the 80's was not feasible even in it's hypothetical phase. Even at it's best, that system was only designed to reduce the number of Nukes to a manageable level, whatever that is. The goal of Nuclear War was to Survive, not to win, so a couple million people left alive was good enough for the Military Planners of the time. Today we know the Star Wars Defense System, or SDI was a smoke screen, an illusion.

The premise of the game series is that history diverges from actual history at the end of the WWII, so you can't take the alliances that occurred after that into account. Secondly, (I've only played F: NV) mankind survived in bunkers and in less affected areas, animals evolved and mutated, as did humans and it ended up with the world depicted in the game.

It's not perfectly logical or realistic, we know for instance from Chernobyl that animals don't mutate wildly but within the conventions of Sci-fi it does make sense and for a game, it works really well IMO.

What other countries? This was a full scale nuclear war. Everyone expended everything they had. Europe is a radioactive wasteland, along with china, and probably the USSR. (as it still WAS the USSR there. I think.) Aside from that, the US was one of the lead perpetrators of the war that came close to ending the world...... So, anyone that is left is either really pissed at us, and have no interest in us rebuilding, or, are so full of their own problems, there is no aid to be given.

The US government can do something better than one man that controls a huge private industry? Erm, you overestimate the US govt.

All the canned food lying about is a bit of a stretch though. I will give ya that.

No the Chinese started the war i mean why would the U.S. who was winning the Sino-American war start a nuclear war when them winning the war would make the U.S. the most powerful nation of the world bar none.

Adding to my first post things before the great war were not so good. USA closed its boarders and "China would invade Alaska. The US would annex Canada and the European Commonwealth would dissolve into quarrelling bickering nation states bent on controlling the last remaining resources on Earth."

And lets not forget, House set up this defense grid EXCLUSIVELY for Las Vegas, a system like that for the US would be to big for the government to handle, and besides, in the Enclaves mind, anyone worth saving was a member of the Enclave, and all people in Vaults were either test experiments, or a control vault meant to be kept safe so if the Enclave needed human cattle, they'd not lose any Enclave personnel.

How could the US have "won" that war? As soon as they came anywhere near winning, China would have launched their nukes rather than lose.

All of this, it's really just a matter of when? Isn't it? Ready to unfold. I like politics, always interested me to a certain extent. Would there really be vaults ready for the citizens? The government has bunkers stocked with food and medicine for years. An EMP could devastate the entire continental United States. Iran for example, just for [censored] and giggles. Hundreds of millions dead? That's the part that's scaring me. No body is prepared for it, there would be panic, starvation, no co-operation, anarchy, disease. There would be no medicine, diabetics, all people undergoing surgery, people on life-support, all dead. Society would crumble as would many other nations as a result. Maybe China? They could EMP us, knowing the possibly outcome, EMP all of Europe as well, nonchalantly and secret of course. Could do it from a ship, no symbol or identification.

One ship in the Mexican Gulf and one in the Mediterranean. Once they've EMP'ed Europe and the U.S. They can wait a little while, then send some aid, help rebuild, etc. They'd bring troops of course, plenty of them. They'd claim they were helping to aid and they would do a lot. Would the troops and doctors and all of those people leave? Of course not, they would stay. They would stay and take over North America. What's to stop them?

Honestly, I think that with US Forces pushing so close to Beijing, the Chinese probably launched their nuclear warheads in a last ditch 'If we can't win, NO ONE wins!' attempt. It's my personal view of how it happened.

Thats besideds the point and not what happened. World got nuked, no one was getting along before the war, resources ran out of everyone. Major over population and the Vaults America build were not meant to save anyone.

Fallout One Intro

War. War never changes. The Romans waged war to gather slaves and wealth. Spain built an empire from it lust for gold and territory. Hitler shaped a battered Germany into and economic superpower but war never changes. In the 21st century war was still waged for the resources that could be acquired, only this time the spoils of war were also its weapons, petroleum and uranium. For these resources China would invade Alaska. The US would annex Canada and the European Commonwealth would dissolve into quarrelling bickering nation states bent on controlling the last remaining resources on Earth. In 2077 the storm of World War had come again. In two brief hours most of the planet was reduced to cinders and from the ashes of nuclear devastation a new civilization would struggle to arise.

Fallout Two Intro

War. War never changes. The end of the world occurred pretty much as we had predicted; too many humans and not enough space or resources to go around. The details are trivial and pointless, the reason as always purely human ones. The Earth was nearly wiped clean of life. A great cleansing, an atomic spark struck by human hands quickly raged out of control. Spears of Nuclear fire rained down from the sky. Continents were swallowed in flames and fell beneath the boiling oceans. Humanity was almost extinguished their spirits becoming part of the background radiation that blanketed the Earth. A quiet darkness fell across the planet lasting many years. Few survived the devastation..

Fallout 3 Intro

War. War never changes, since the dawn of human kind when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything from God to justice to simple psychotic rage. In the year 2077 after millennia of armed conflict the destructive nature of man could sustain itself no longer. The world was plunged into an abyss of nuclear fire and radiation but it was not as sum had predicted “the end of the world.” Instead the apocalypse was simply the prologue of another bloody chapter of human history. For man had succeeded in destroying the world but war, war never changes.

I apologize to my incompetence. I was unaware of the circumstances. Can someone explain to me when the Enclave or whom ever said this did in-fact want this to happen? Why would the Enclave want this to happen? Kind of psychotic. Everyone is now in quandary.

The Enclave started sometime before the war, made up of the high end politicians and their familys. People that could be considered 'perfect' and 'patriotic' Americans. My guess is the Enclave figured they were THE BEST of America, anything else was inferior. I also recall something about them being around so they can continue 'The Fight Against Communism' but they seem to have cast that fight off long ago.

Great War happened October 23, 2077. Enclave saw everyone else not Enclave as bad and impure. The world was running out or had already ran out of resources and major over population. They wanted to start over. Cut info from FO2 was that the Enclave wanted to find another planet and start over. Still from what I have seen they simply wanted to wipe the planet clean and start over. Vaults were meant to test people under different conditions to aid in Enclaves plans.

Now it's more clear. The only difficulty I have in understanding is, where's the information on other countries? I don't really mind not playing in other countries, I just would want to hear what it's like there. I'd love to read about that, post-apocalyptic stories have also caught my interest.

EDIT: In reply to Diviner, don't get upset, just curious. If it is 270 something years into the future, wouldn't there already be some sort of succession in starting life on another planet?

There is no information on individual countries just that every nation earth suffered the same fate as America maybe even worce. EU fell apart before the great war and before that the EU went to war with the middle east and nukes were used.

Enclaves plans have not worked out to well. Maybe future fallouts will give some info but I really hope not. Info about Enclave going to space was cut from FO2 and I don't like the Idea of Fallout in Space.

Thanks for that. After the Great War, everything became placid? Maybe nuclear war is a good thing. Give humanity a chance to start over :)

Well, some people, in world NPCs, and IRL fans, think the war was a mixed blessing. It caused problems, but in ways, it set us back enough to the point where humanity can thrive, but not without great struggles.

You don't have to do a lot of physical damage to force the collapse of modern civilisation as it stands. EMP will do a massive amount of damage to electronic infrastructure, even to valve technology if there's enough of it.

What Primary Kill doesn't take out, will certainly suffer from Secondary Kill, when people become subject to the entire range of diseases that we formerly had under control. Social breakdown dislocates organised government and society, communications breakdown - both being able to communicate across distances and the ability to transport goods. That means those factories and services that may still be working in places can no longer ship goods. Pretty much every stockplie of manufactured resources runs out, etc etc.

The game/s take a lot of liberties...if they didn't you would have to hunt for food with a bow and arrow, and melee weapons and rudimentary bow weapons would be the best you could get. There'd by no stimpacks or such, no ammo (nitro-based propellant doesn't just magically appear), no replacement parts for any machinery such as guns, literacy would be a lost art for most of the population, and after 200 years, I would suggest a lot of what you find while scavving would be pretty useless.

In game terms, as for the rest of the world I think they would be just as badly off. The game is post-apocalyptic, meaning that everyone has gone under. Also, F3 has Russians and Irish in it, and people simply don't get on a boat or plane to migrate from somewhere good to somewhere bad, so I'm guessing that Europe is pretty well toasted as well.

On the 'how's and why's', well, as Chinese troops were rocking around the DC area, and the number of Chinese weapons in F3 is so high, I would suggest that the US was well and truly on the ropes just before the end...leading me to consider that the US initiated the nuke strikes out of spite...Mutually Assured Destruction.

Still doesn't remove the indelible issue of the lack of resources. How can tress grow, how can fruit grow? What is left for humanity to start over with?
