So, how's ranged combat on horseback? My main character is an archer, so...yeah.

At least, Mounted combat is compatible with http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=15225.
Nice!

WEll, Skyrims combat in general is clunky, so I'm sure its the kind of thing well get used to. Besides, as a lover of calvary, I'm sure I will be trying this, no matter how bad it turns out to be. Also, keep in mind, it is still in Beta.

It's very difficult. The crosshair actually doesn't tell you anything, sometimes you'll have a dead-on aim and miss by a long shot. When it does work though, it's pretty fun, but it's useless at long distances.

Technically, the horses are realistic as mountain horse do indeed have wide feet like that. On topic, using the beta patch it feels very clunky and I'm hoping that's just because its a beta.

Hmm...well, like someone above me said, it's still in beta, so hopefully it gets fixed soon. I hate traveling somewhere by horse, only to have to get off every time I get attacked by a group of bandits.

Once I got used to how I had to aim, it turned out fine. It isn't, at least for me, the same way I have to aim when I'm not riding, so I'm still not as accurate as when I'm on the ground, but I can deal with it. Anything is better than constantly dismounting to kill wolves like Oblivion...

Well I like the idea of horse combat. I also appreciate Beth adding things like this. But in its current incantation it could use some work. If there was a first person option it would be much improved. However, combat in 3rd person is lacking especially when looking at archery as it stands at the moment. Make the horse combat have a first person option and this would be perfect.

Oh and I am on PC and have been messing with it for the last day or so.
I agree. Like the idea and with first person it would be marvelous.

Also, I rather like the look of the horses--they look like could carry a man in heavy armour. Wouldn't mind having more types of horses, though.

It looks very similar to the mounted combat system in Darkfall Online. You hit the left "strafe" key, and your char leaned left in the saddle, and if you hit the right "strafe" key, your char leaned right in the saddle. If you hit the attack button, your char would swing in whatever direction he was leaning, then reset to middle of the saddle. If you were moving and hit the attack button without leaning to a side, your char would lean forward and swing his weapon, hitting anything in front of the mount.
However, it did not allow archery or magic while mounted, for balance reasons. Your mount itself could attack though when you ordered it too. If you stood still and hit the attack button, the mount would attack whatever was in front of it (Whether it be by biting it, headbutting it, kicking it, etc), and by holding back while attacking, your mount would attack whatever was behind it (Either by kicking out with it's back legs, swinging it's tail, etc).
Mounted Combat in Darkfall took a bit of practice to get used to, but once you got good at it, you became pretty lethal, since you could hit alot harder on a mount.
I can definately see mounted combat being useful in Skyrim for slow but hard hitting opponents, like Giants and Mammoths. Particularly mounted archery against the Mammoths.

I could not find a way to control what way i lean to swing,

Block and attack control the swing direction, you can also hold it down to get better timing, but it counts as a power-swing.

Horse archery looks a bit weird to me, in that you can shoot from both sides of the horses head. Mount & Blade restricts you to the left side of the horse, because it just wouldn't be practical for a right handed person to do anything else. M&B archery also has inertia; so you have to place the crosshair above and to the left or right of your target if it's a long way off, moving and you're on a moving horse. I swear Oblivion had more realistic arrow drop than Skyrim, but maybe its a false memory.

Do you remember the name of the mod? It looks awesome.

I've not had a chance to download 1.6 yet. I am going to wait until they get it out of 'beta' so I don't have to always be downloading these updates.

Why oh why did they not keep first person on horses? I don't mind melee combat in 3rd on horses but as an it archer would be really to have a first person option.

It's simply called, "Horse Armors", you can find it on the nexus or workshop.

I have no interest in mounted combat, but you mock the look of the horses damn, I think the horses look fantastic in skyrim with their fat little hobbit legs.

Everyone keeps saying the horses look ugly. I must be really blind or something...
Me too apparently.

As for the horse combat: It looks like it can be a bit clunky, but I will reserve judgement for a time I have tried it myself. I am just glad they add it and destribute it for free. Things like that make me more willing to pay for additional content.

What a bizarre response.

So, anything that is free I can't complain about?
Okay cool.
Guess PS3 players should have been told that when PSN went down for a while.
