A funny story how I first thought Skyrim was extremely racis

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 2:06 pm

It's a long time ago but.

So I entered Whiterun to hand in the a quest and some redguards were standing there telling me a story about how they are not liked there, etcetera.

They greeted me with: "hey you". So I was lightly annoyed...
Then they gave me some quest but I went on with the main quest...

But then after I got my first shout it said: "Go try out your new shout "

And what a coincidence!! The redguard guys were just passing by!

I didn't use my shout on them because I "roleplay" a "good guy" but I really think it was scripted that way for a while. :P

I play on DiD only so I soon found out it wasn't scripted like that.

It's interesting to me that the term 'racist' is one of the most common on this forum. When Morrowind came out, players thought it was cool that Dunmer were so biased

Mainly because over the last 20 years you'll notice even unintentional nods towards racism get you black booked for life.

stormcloaks dislike dark elfs for not taking a side or participating the war, no one even the Empire s letting the khajit into the towns, and the argonians and dark elfs hate each other uchmore than the nords and dark elfs hate each other so its more for stability issues of keeping the dark elfs and argonians seperated.

Everyone is racist in Nirn, safe for the imperials maybe, and that's when the ones they were racist towards serve them as control tools. Real life is just the same, specially in middle age. Now a days racism is kind of erradicated in the first world, despite all the fuss, if you get to know some "third worldish" places on your own, you'll realise there's little to no difference.

All Nords are racist.

Screw you! The Nords are just trying to free their homeland from the oppression of the Impirials. Instead of respecting the Nord's culture and beliefs, they just flat out take them over and try to change things. It's like when the British took over Scotland and Ireland. The Scots and the Irish stood up against the oppressive English and put up a serious fight. Does that mean the the Scots and Irish are racist for standing up for their homeland?

There's always crap like this that happens with regard to a revolution. It doesn't make them racist.

All races are racist in Tameriel. The Imperials probably least racist, and the Bretons and Bosmer I haven't noticed being super racist either, but all the rest are.

EDIT: Oh yeah there was that governor that tortured Argonians, forgot about that.

People are referring to their racism towards elves and the beast races not the Imperials. And it's clearly apparent that the Stormcloaks are quite bigoted.

Black booked! You racist! Why not white booked huh!? :swear: :swear: :swear: :swear: :swear: :swear: :swear:

:P All jokes aside I really liked the atmosphere of Morrowind and I welcome more social strive into the TES series. Racism is wrong but wrong things are good in a game like TES. Murder, racism, abuse of power, being a Daedric Prince :P, slavery. Those are all tools that bring strive to the world and thus bring you tasks to resolve (or make worse if you're evil).

Racism is a broad term...

My example was of the hateful type:

"Hey you can use a shout now, why not try it?"
"humptie dum... Hey... 2 redguards walking by..."

There are also people that just like to be around there own race, that's not necessarily hate I think.

People tend to bring their bias and self hatred into the world of gaming. Therefore,

Nords(light skin) are bad for being racist

Dunmer(dark skin) are ok for being racist

Just as how the "wider audience" perceives real life to be.

so true liek there absolutely no threads talking about how racists the dark elfs are, how they came into Skyrim expecting everyone to conform to how they do things in morrowwind..but to be expected to do things like the people in Skyrim do....PERPOSTURUS!

bottomline...Nords aint racist, they DISLIKE EVERYONE until that person proves thier worth, their mettle. The dark elfs have forgotten that "In Rome do as the romans do".

I like that Skyrim is a racist place. Just displaying racism doesn't encourage it, it just shows how human nature is, which despite what way say, is inherently racist. Not being racist in my opinion is an intellectual excercise for us humans, against our genetic dislike of strangers.

I so want to punch that jerk in the Windhelm tavern, going on about dark elves. Meanwhile, there are two in the room, and he doesn't even seem to notice.

cool story bro.

But in all seriousness, I believe those were alikir? I slaughtered them like animals, harassing all the redguard women in skyrim. They deserved to die.

Cool in a character/world building way perhaps?

I find it hard to imagine people going "yeah, Dunmer are so cool with their slaves" - I mean I liked the Dunmer, liked the characterful culture, loved being in House Telvanni and thought it would have been neat to be able to really join the Twin Lamps and make a big difference for the slaves (I mostly just settled with killing slavers in their caves), since racism and prejudice is something you can move on from.

Personally I think it is a fine character/world building thing in Skyrim. I think the reason it might stick out more is that not all Nords are like that, even some follows Ulfric comment on it. Indeed for a province that has so long been part of the Empire (which is quite tolerant) it might make racist Stormcloaks seem a touch backwards thinking ( being an insular, suspicious people until an outsider has proven themselves is one thing, a sudden upswing in "This country for Ethnic Group X" is something else).

Thalmor aren't racists. They are hardcoe Social Darwinists. They believe the Altmer are better and more civilized than the other races and rightly so - the language, culture, religion of Tamriel are all based on Altmer culture. Furthermore, they handed over the Empire's ass to them on a silver plate, that small island nation.
