I wish you could see the roads, at least. I've gotten used to it though.

Nice a war of attrition has begun

He's now perched on top of a red glass vase filled with fake cherries on top of our fireplace. We'll see how long this lasts. This will be an on-going thing. Its kind of like Where's Waldo.

It would be very cool if there were signposts at intersections that told you the actual road names.

I like Morrowind's Map the best. The way it is blacked out until you actually get there, and don't get me started on fast travel.

I don't know why people dislike fast travel so. Nobody is forcing you to use it.

The problem with fast travel is that it doesn't exist in a vacuum. If they put in fast travel and assume people will be using it, that impacts other aspects of the design.

Anyways, if the OP thinks they're the only one that feels that way about the map, then clearly they weren't around when Skyrim first came out. A lot of people don't like it. I'm one of them.

I have mixed feelings.

On the one hand, I think the 3D map is a major contributor toward making Skyrim feel smaller than the last three games, The map looks like a model train layout on a 4x8 sheet of plywood. Because I see everything all at once it looks smaller to me. Plus, it gets covered up with overly-large icons as I explore. The icons take up a lot of map space. The icons for a city fill up an area all around that city, making the distance between cities look smaller.

On the other hand, I actually think the 3D map is attractive. I like looking at it. I use a mod that gets rid of the icons completely and another mod that adds detailed roads, so the map is more functional.

In the 3D map's defense, Skyrim is a bit more vertical than the previous games. I think 3D helps indicate some of the mountain trails that might not make much sense on a 2D map.

And the map in Skyrim doesn't show roads... That bothers me so much. It's pretty much useless for planning how to get places. I still don't know where all the main roads are.

I hate how you can't see roads on the map!

I just want roads on the map, and maybe a quest that I can use the map to find out caravan routes.

I would have liked it if every time you clicked 'Map' that a scroll would unroll in front of you and you would be looking at something like those Civil War camp maps. As you find things the map would get filled out as if the player was marking the map.

Don't get me wrong, the Skyrim map is amazingly cool, but not nearly as useful as a flat map nor as immersive role-playing wise.

One thing I find myself really wishing is that, on those rare occasions that I need it, I could pull up the local map without first pulling up the world map.

I could tell where the roads are from the geography of the map (the roads are always in the valleys), but I did get a map mod that has the roads on it and it is better to use in the game. It would be a nice addition to the stock map for folks.

+1 i use the map mod aswell, its so much better than the game one.

Each map style has their ups and downs. The Skyrim map style is probably themed like the skills menu where you "look to the heavens", so the map is the view of the gods.

But i agree, it gets old after a while and you just want an old fashioned map.

My wife moved Aldiun in my closet. Every time I go in there its like he is looking at me saying, "dude, seriously?"

Lol, that's pretty funny.

Is he still on the mantle or did the wife become dragonbourne overnight and slay him?

Ha! I just posted on this in another thread. I use this. http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/10044

I don't care for the in-game map or the map markers either. I just don't like the feeling of being Zeus in the middle of playing Skyrim.
