Game Store Workers

with it being less than a month until release, does anyone feel sorry for the people in one of the most awesome professions under creating the awesome games. knowing as we crazed fans do that they are doomed and they probably don't even get paid double time and a half?

I feel bad for them because they are going to be standing behind the register with copies of skyrim just a few feet away in the back room and they can't have them.

It's hardly a stressful job by most standards, and they'll get overtime.

Not really, they enjoy their jobs and they don't mind the occasional annoying customer and they don't mind me asking them what happened at PAX or E3

It's actually really fun work. And midnight releases are great because we get to talk to a lot of other fans and just have as much of a great time as the people buying the games. The time flies by pretty quick and it doesn't take long before we too are at home with our copies. The real torture is having your hands on the games for days before release without being to play them. :sadvaultboy:

Not to mention if they work somewhere that pays a commision on anything, amound of store cards sold etc. They could write off games and systems on taxes.

No not really. If they don't want to work at a game store for big releases, they probably shouldn't be working at a game store.

I actually envy theme. I wish I could get a job at a game store but school keeps me too busy. :sadvaultboy:

I don't think getting a paycheck for working a late shift is exploitation.

Unless they don't get coffee.

I don't feel bad for them, in a sense that they are working OT or anything. I am sure that Skyrim is on their mind though 24/7...and I guess dealing with customers in any retail store would be annoying at times, and it's probably feeling like the longest day of their life because they just want to go home and play Skyrim all day into the weee hours. I think what would really svck, is if they worked a midnight release and had to be back at work at 11am and their next day off wasn't until the following week. :woot:

Hahahaha. You're so cute.

I bet you've never worked a day of retail in your life.

I was at Gamestop the other day, putting some more money down on my preorder, and I was asking him how late he thought they'd be open for launch. He said they always just try to get everyone in and out and get home and play as quickly as possible. I was like yeah that must be excruciating but he said it was really great seeing everyone who was committed to the release.

Nope, don't feel bad for them because they have access to hundreds of games before and after release and most of them take advantage of it.

Yeah, I can end this discussion I work at a game store and I get games a couple days early sometimes when they get shipped to us early. So while we have to deal with some...... "Passionate" fans on release day their are a few perks that make up for it. And considering I've talked mayby 25 people into preordering skyrim (these people were on the fence about getting it, not true fans just curious. When dealing with them I'm all "Convert to TES or Die!") I think it's ok that I do get it early as a little bonus.

I'm on the management team at my GameStop, and I've got two answers to this:

1. Doing midnight launches for games that I personally care about is actually really fun, and not agonizing at all. You get to socialize with all the fans, and enjoy the crowd to the fullest. Also, we really don't get out of work that much later than midnight.

2. If you're a smart employee like me, you work it out with your other managers to open on 11/10/11, so that you can punch out and get straight in line, than have the next two and a half days off to play the game :)
