So I'm getting DRILLED by arrows... WAY too easily

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 1:55 am

Well base damage of the bow doesn't change either. Unless you mean the displayed damage in the inventory?

The damage formula for bows is (bow damage + arrow damage) * skill * perks * etc. So the arrows make a lot of difference.

And I don't know about the NPC mages doing more damage than PC mages...

I get that the base damage for bows isnt the listed damage, but the listed damage for arrows never goes up. Are you saying that's a "bug"?

Incidentally, that's base damage of a Daedric Greatsword. Imagine a dude shooting Daedric Greatswords at you.

Everything is multiplied by enemy weapon skill of course.
Sure, except they use iron arrows most of the time.

My armor rating is at 160, I have 3/5 for Agile Defender (40% increase for light armor I believe), health is at 230, and I'm a level 34 getting wasted by a Dwarven Bow and Dwarven Arrow wielding Silver Hand (I TGM'd so I could find out what he was using). I can take a few power strikes from Silver Greatswords and just a couple from a Glass Battle Axe, but wtf? One arrow shot and I'm down to 1/5 of health? I noticed as I've been leveling up, I've been taking increasing damage from all archers... like over half health from one shot. Am I missing something?

Mods I'm using are below:
- Cowardly Horses
- Craftable Arrows
- Realistic Ragdoll Force
- Duel2 Blocking
- Better Sorting
- Water Textures
- Werewolf Tweaks

have you tried to fight yourself way out by using shouts??my suggestion is either use slow time or ethereal form to close the gap and don't forget to eat vegy soup to dish unlimited amount of power attacks to staggered while dealing extra damage ;D

OP: On the other hand I play as an archer and kill a lot of foes the way you are killed by them. ;) I usually sneak or stay in hiding. I never thought that running towards my death was a good idea anyway. Ghehe. It seems that if I want to play a non-ranged character it is time to invest in stuff that makes me a tank. ;)

OP says Dwarven Bow and Arrows. Yeah, Level 1 Bandits use Iron Arrows. Nobody cares about level 1 Bandits.

Naw I still see Bandit highwaymen and outlaws with fur and iron arrows that can 2-3 shot my archer nord girl with Iron arrows while at 75 skill with most of the archery skill tree damage perks picked using steel arrows and an superior elven bow need to take up to 2x as many hits on them to kill. thats with light armor perks and full elven armor with about 120 armor.

Bandit marauders use iron arrows. Doesn't affect the damage output at all.

I play as an archer with leather armor but has never found enemy archers to be much of an problem, mages are the main killer, followed by melee and animals.
Part of the reason is probably that I sneak and have a follower, currently Aela, Lydia before and they tend to be discovered first and draw the fire.

Oh, well I guess that you're right and the formulas on UESP wiki are completely wrong then.

Enemies with bows are magical, they just do more damage, walk away everyone, nothing to see here.

Still, 160 displayed AR at level 32? At that level you should be preferably clad full in Legendary Dragonscale. What are you wearing?

That's only if you power grind smithing

use a shield, if you can't handle archers

archers die very fast and if you close the gap(you know there is a shout for melees), they will switch to melee and are less of a treat.

i rather have them like this, than being useless. archers should do dmg. that's is all they can do.

Nah, I know he's a stronger one but he's not a "boss". According to console, he's only a level 19 but that's all I could gather. Still trying to figure out how to get more stat info from him.
I think that's a Bandit Plunderer, because most Bandit Marauders are level 25+ and they at least have 400+ health, while the Bandit Chiefs (bosses) stats are slightly higher. So those having problems with skilled archers, then I really recommend you guys use restoration to your advantage, because this skill has very powerful healing spells, only starting at the apprentice level.

What percentage of your health are you losing per hit? (Maybe you just need to dodge and close in faster?).

Do you have a companion who can help you out? Have you considered Conjuration? Illusion? Sneak?

Are you getting drilled in just a few caves or in almost all caves? (Are you stumbling on some highly levelled areas that are out of your league atm?)

What's your armor rating currently for level 34 and how many HP do you have? (Have you fallen behind the levelling process?)

This thread proves that adventuring in Skyrim is hardcoe. So those that say Skyrim is the easiest in the series, obviously didn't take the time to explore, the enemies stats and skills are off the chart in this game.

160AR isn't much and why arrows are doing the damage that they do.

Difficulty setting is also a factor, as higher settings increase the damage dealt by creatures and NPCs.

If you're armor-capped on Adept then enemy Archers should not be an issue, although Draugr Deathlords with Ebony kit will still hurt a bit.

It sounds like the OP is not doing much (if any) crafting, as his AR is a bit low for level 32, which would explain why he's getting shredded. One possible solution: use cover, as it breaks LOS and causes NPC archers to stop firing until they can see you again. Once they stop firing pop back out and shoot at them, then break LOS again. Repeat as needed until they're all dead.

So the player character can drop a dragon with one arrow but the NPCs are not supposed to be able to take out a person with a single hit?

One arrow usually works in the real world provided it hits something vital.

learn to dodge

Also, use cover. A rock or an enemy or even a follower or conjured helper. Shields reduce arrow damage if you use block.

Heck, in the real world 1 arrow works even if it doesnt hit anything vital. Might not kill but it sure takes the fight out of them.

Meh, one-hit kills is way more fun than Dead-is-Dead IMO. Brings back fond memories of hardcoe PVP with 007 on my N64... where a pistol and a rocket launcher were equally deadly. Those were the days my friend. I mean really? Who takes a warhammer to the noggin or a bear claw to the guts and just walks away? I wanna piss my pants when a two handed barbarian comes charging at me, or an archer is raining volleys of barbed death in my general direction. I want to FEEL the incentive to flee, or block, or dig-in and hit them harder-faster-first.

Give me deadly opponents, or give me BSoD!

Just dodge. I had a high level character with no points ever put into Health. It was put 70% into Stamina and 30% to Magicka. Even on high level where archers could have one-shotted my 100 HP char with Light Armour I got around with some tact. Went into third person view to see what's going around me and whenever I saw any of the bow noobs ready to shoot an arrow I waited until they let it go then sprinted to the side and continued whacking those in melee renge. It's also a good idea to side-step melee opponents in favor of rushing to archers and taking those out first, they usually go down in two hits with a good weapon.

I have noticed this too lately, I am running 350 armor rating with 250 health, i had a mage before at this level that only used ebony skin, but this time i am using heavy armor with a circlet, and somehow, i am getting damaged more, ic an understand if they sneak attack and do 3/4 health damage, but when im staring at them, and spamming fireballs at them, their accuracy should drop. End of story. I like to try and get my HA armor up by letting them hit me, but seriously, 2/4 health damage, from one shot?! This should no be happening.

Well I'm wearing the Nightingale armor I got from the Thieves Guild, it's no dragonscale but I figured that should be pretty stellar armor, guess not.

False. I'm using Nightingale Bow and Glass arrows and they'll easily take 4-6 arrows. MAYBE if i can get off 3 sneak attacks x3 with my perks, otherwise they just eat them.

Very good point. I've been playing on expert. Wow, totally slipped my mind this probably has a lot to do with it.

Upgrade it with void salts, should make it a bit better.
