Well, they're smart enough to make cheese, tan leather, hunt and start a fire. I reckon their intellegence is on par with that of a stone-age caveman.

Yeah thats what I'm saying. I've always wondered how smart they were. I wish there was a friendly approachable Giant in Skyrim we can do a quest for, that'd be interesting.

Where are the young giants? That's what I'd like to know. Maybe they're all just Nords with some common growth hormone disorder. They can't fit in their houses or find clothes that fit. You'd do well to start making cheese and crafting giant underpants in the same situation.
There doesn't seem to be any females either, which I guess is why they're a bit cranky - they're frustrated.

Well, the problem is, I don't know if they've grasped the concept of language yet. They seem to lead rather solitary lives with no sense of social hierarchy. They probably see humans like humans see rats - leave them be if they're not bothering us, but if they get too close, then *SQUISH*. Even if they did need something doing it would probably be something mundane like "Find my lost mamoth" or "bring me 10 cow hides".

I was suprised at how Giants ended up turning out in game. Betheseda in their early marketing preview of Skyrim, mentions that they are gentle creatures that only turn violent when you mess with their mammoths.

Smarter than Altmer though.

The difference being in the fact that Altmer were once proud and intelligent race like any other race we see today, while giants are not much smarter than from that time.?

So what's the difference? :P They are alright dudes, as long as you stay away. They don't even attack on sight, and if you approach too close they give you a friendly warning not to [censored] around them or their mammoths or they'll kill you. Unlike bears who are depicted as creatures who will usually run if in danger and ignore you if you're far enugh in game's loading screen, while I have never ever seen a bear do that, they charge down on me as soon as they see me from the top of the hill.

Maybe there aren't any. Perhaps the giants are the remnants of an ancient by-gone age where they roamed the world. Then all the females died out due to a plague that ravaged the feminine species, leaving pockets of solitary males living out the rest of their long lives in a way a typical male would do when left alone.....

Perhaps you could compare them with Neanderthals. They are brutish and stupid, don't have any language, but still has primitive crafts like cheesemaking.

And that's more than you can say for most people now, so we can't exactly call them stupid.

If they live in a social structure, then they have to have some kind of language or communication skills. Same with passing knowledge down to the little giants. Does not mean they are smart in the sense of book smart. However, they are smart at being Giants.

Neanderthals are a bad example for your argument.

Awesome and yes they seem smarter than most creatures in Skyrim. They "herd" their mammoths and to me trolls seem like brainless brutes. Think about it. Other than the people who would be smarter?

We get the term "dwarves" because the giants named the Dwemer thusly, so yeah, I think they have mastered language.

I tried to converse with one the other day. It went much like this:

me: Greetings my good fellow. May I intrude upon your moment of leisure to enquire how exactly you manufacture this fine mammoth's cheese?
giant: HUUUHH.
me: I see. May I have a taste of this most exquisite of dairy products? *grabs a bit of cheese*
giant: HUUUUUUUUUHHH!!!!!!!!! *runs toward me with his mace raised*

I estimate their IQ to be somewhere in the vicinity of a block of their own cheese.

Maybe a third party looked at the situation and named one race dwarves and the other giants. :P

Well, you need an IQ at about 30 to open a door. I see no doors made by Giants.
Making cheese will need milking, refining and other processes.
They herd their mammoths like our early hunters and gatherers figured out.
They got weapons made out of wood and stone, and clothes made of leather.
They know fire and to eat cooked meat.
They know to make farmers sacrifice cows to them for leaving them alone. Can be compared with protection money from gangs and crimelords today.
And how to they get those big, ornate chest filled with goodies into their camps?

They're a bit further than our stone age counterparts I'd reckon.

There are no female giants and no giant children... maybe the giants are a product of some Nord mutation after all.
