Giving up

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 8:00 pm

Sadly, I am giving up trying to play Skyrim, which is a shame as I was such a big Oblivion fan and so looked forward to Skyrim. However, at 88 hours in on my main character, I am asking Steam for a refund of my purchase price, as well as the price I paid for the additional Prima online content.

I can accept that this is a huge game, and there are going to be errors. But the game has been out for nearly 5 months and still there are massive problems. In my case, two glitched quests have completely stopped my progress on the Mages and the Companions quest lines.

Mages: I returned from Revealing the Unseen to report to Savos Aren and instead of him trying to break down the wall, he's just standing there. Nothing could advance the quest. Reloading and trying the quest over didn't change how it ended either. So eventually I just advanced the quest on the PC console, but after the explosion, I was stuck in the room with the lady mage and the barrier Ancano has erected was trapping me in the room so I could not find the Arch Mage's body. When I reloaded and tried to return to the College, the gate was now locked and unopenable. Great. Am I just supposed to keep advancing the quest using the console? Is that the fun I paid for, to keep typing in instructions to advance past coding errors? I thought maybe if I advanced the main quest it would be unlock this one, but 20 hours of play later, no such luck.

Companions: I killed the Escaped Criminal (a Radiant quest) and returned to Sklor as instructed and he has no convo option to finish the quest. Without finishing that quest, I cannot advance the rest of the Companions line.

So that's 2 of the main quest chains irretrievably busted. I feel like I wasted 88 hours of my time. I know I didn't really, but it feels that way. One invests time in a game like this to see things through to the end, but here it just gets stuck. Irritating beyond belief. And the interwebs are full of examples of this kind of error in Skyrim.

So just give me my money back, I'm giving up.

Couldn't you just play it again? Maybe try another character? Maybe explore more? Maybe do the infinity of other quests? Maybe find a nice wife and settle down as a hunter in Riften? Maybe roleplay? Maybe mod the game until you can't make anything better? Maybe waste your time doing something useful with your game instead of wasting it here? The possibilities are endless.

Also, can you ask a refund for a working (for the most part) product? It's like asking a refund for a book with random typos. But then, I don't know Steam rules about those things, so, who knows.

Your lucky you don't play on ps3...ps3 version is an atrocity..but when I got or for PC it was amazing..I don't mind using console commands to advance a quest. I rarely have to...but if it really bugs you that much then I feel sorry for you

No offense, but you must not be much of a fan. I have been a huge fan since Morrowind and before patches. The game may have been out for 5 months, but you can't just fix every problem overnight.

You have not even looked into the other vast amounts of quests. The game isn't Skyrim: The Companions Guild/Mages College. Get out and enjoy the HUGE game that has been created.

Have you even attempted a daedric quest? Explored a draugr filled tomb to find the Word Walls? Done the Civil War Quest? The main quest?

A true fan can get over the problems and go on somewhere else. I did. When I encountered a bug, I reloaded back to before the problem and didn't have any problems. I was stuck on a few quests but decided that there was way to much to entertain me to worry about it.

And not all quests are buggy. And it really sounds like you are complaining over small problems that going back a few saves would fix right up.

We all have had to reload at some point. Don't give up because that obviously means you're not much of a fan

and look at the PS3 problems. geez you have it easy... you have CONSOL COMMANDS to work around problems. Us consol people have to svck it up and move on. I cannot believe you're whining over small bugs when PS3 people could barely play for so long.

You're experiencing bugs that most people clearly don't experience, and while it's sad, it certainly doesn't entitle you to a refund.

On PC you have the huge luxury of mods and the kit...can't be mad at that. The ps3 version of skyrim and the PC version is like day and night

seriously. And they are small glitches too. He probably hasn't tried any other work arounds. Hasn't gone back a save or two and retried. Hasn't looked at the wiki for help.

Same. I handed in my PS3 version because it was unplayable but for pc I'm doing fine. svcks those bugs though ... I've had to tweak the console a bit though to advance a quest or two

I think it's a little ridiculous that after playing for 88 hours you're going to ask for a refund. Not only are there console commands to get around those bugs, and self-fixes you can do, future patches will correct these issues. Now I'm far from a Skyrim apologist, I make no secret that I prefer Morrowind and think Skyrim has done so many things wrong.

But you sir are being a bit of a twit. For how much you've gotten out of the game, you'd be served right if Steam laughed in your face.

Valve denying a request for a refund on a game that the customer has already played successfully for 88 hours wouldn't be unreasonable at all. Just because a customer feels entitled to a refund doesn't mean they should always receive one.

Bugs are not a valid reason to stop playing a game this awsome.

Skyrim needs hell of a lot of ram. I just recently upgraded my OS to 64bit, and installed 8gbs more of ram and it seems to be doing whatever I want.

Skyrim won't use more than 4 gbs anyway...and we're lucky it is LAA-patched by default.

Problem is you won't get 4gb available for the game in a 32bit system. You might be lucky if you get 2gbs, with all the resource hungry OSs out there. And this is causing the CTDs. Lack of available random memory.

I've had a few playthroughs that have stopped dead due to certain bugs & it can sap your very will to live, A game by any other name will have been thrown out or forgotten about but with Bethesda games you have to sign on the dotted line & be prepared to do some serious surgery, Skyrim is a step forward regarding game stability & i still wake up in a cold sweat remembering the time when Fallout 3 was released.

Bethesda fans stick it out through thick & thin, You have to admire their tenacity & blind faith in equal measure.

I seemed to have no probs with Fallout 3 & Fallout NV. Especially game breaking ones. Skyrim with the new engine and all, gave me more trouble than let say 5 or 6 games put together.

Steams own rules are unimportant the law and statutory rights govern your right to a refund. The law states that a product must be fit for purpose. If he cant progress with the main quest and the problem is with the product then he is entitled to a refund weather steam like it or not.

ohh, if i do remember steam don't have a customer service number.
just a suggestion, why not make another character. i made a second character on my PS3 when i encountered a major glitch that stopped me. i had like 90+ hours on that character. the second play thru is a lot more smoother if you knew what you know. lastly, if you truly a : 'oblivion fan'
I was such a big Oblivion fan and so looked forward to Skyrim.

then, quitting is such a lie.

This. Try another character, explore, try other guilds, you might not run into these problems again.

Maybe your 1st character took an arrow to the knee and his or her son/daughter is taking their place while they search for a job as a city guard.
