A Good Assassin?

Post » Tue Jul 17, 2012 12:33 am

I am looking to play as a Breton vampire assassin who uses illusion magic, daggers and some conjuration for when things get out of hand plus all of the usual thief archetype skills. However, since I've always played as a rather neutral or perhaps even evil in many ways character, I think being a good guy would also be good. So, is it possible to play as a positive assassin as the vampire quests of the Dawnguard DLC especially seem really evil to me?

Sure it is. And you can even call yourself "The Dark Knight".

That is kind of what I mean. An assassin, but a good one so to speak.

Well, the Thieves Guild arguably could be done purely on a survival basis. After being seized by the Imperials at Helgen, you're guy is broke and a life of crime is the only way to truly earn enough money to survive. At least, that is what I do for role-playing purposes. Can I do the Dawnguard vampire quests but as a good vampire also?

Being an Assassin is a means to an end, nothing more. That end is up to you and so a Good Assassin is possible.

Nice nickname. I want an assassin kind of like Assassin's Creed. What they do isn't good, but they're reasons are so to speak.

Being a vampire doesn't mean you are evil, it means you are cursed(or blessed depending on perspective). You just have to make some less than pleasant sacrifices at times, but you can still be a "Good" vampire.

I'm playing as that at the moment: an assassin who wants to end war and corruption.

You kind of have to be a lone wolf. That means no Dark Brotherhood and no Thieves Guild, unless joining them helps advance some other goal (i.e., the - spoiler - assassination of the emperor) However, you can have a network of sympathisers who may or may not know your true vocation. I aim to have at least one in every city - Mjoll in Riften, Brunwulf in Windhelm, Kust in Falkreath, etc. who are useful allies should you need to resupply or hide from the law for a bit.

But, aiming to block out the sun with Harkon? That's evil. How can I do that as a good guy?

Well, working with the Thieves Guild would give the assassin the necessary funding to purchase houses across the different reaches, which would each serve as hideouts from the law. Plus, since after Helgen you are left with nothing, I see it as more of an act of desperation. As for the Dark Brotherhood, well, I'm not too sure of that one. Any ideas how I can do that as a good guy?

Also, what side would you say to be more of the good guys? Stormcloaks or Imperials?

You take out some corrupt people in the questline, including some higher-end ones. You could view the other contracts as a means to an end if your character is a pragmatist. That or you could use it merely as a place to train and hone your skills, without actually taking on any contracts.

Stormcloaks or Imperials?

Well I'm a Stormcloak at heart, but I'll have to say neither. They're both revealed to have been guilty of atrocities, and their morals and motivations are subjective. My character does as much as she can to impede them both.

Oh, just checked the wiki. Turns out you do what you do to Harkon as the Dawnguard but also as a vampire. Plus, blocking out the sun would allow my guy to hide in the shadows better. He'd only be doing it to further his own gains, not assist the madman that is Harkon. Makes sense! Thanks. But what about the Dark Brotherhood?

The current Emperor condemned the free will of the people by agreeing to the White-Gold Concordat. Nobody should be told what Gods they can or can't worship. Also, as you said, there are some corrupt people killed such as Grelog the Kind at the very start. The rest are, unfortunately, just a means to an end. My guy will need the backing of the Dark Brotherhood to become a successful assassin. Plus, at the end, when you

become the leader of the DB it could be that my guy is trying to change their ways to only kill the bad from an RP point of view
.

As for the war, I will keep my guy neutral for as long as possible. But, once I begin to run out of other quests, I may have him side with the Imperials. Whilst they are far from perfect, a long war only leads to more casualties. Plus, my guy would not support the racist views of some of the Stormcloaks nor want Skyrim to be at risk from invasion from the Thalmor as they prevent people's basic rights such as religious believes.

Now, what reason could my guy have for visiting Skyrim? I don't know much about the Breton race...

So, what can be a backstory as to my guy's reasons for visiting Skyrim? What is it Bretons even excel at? Magic, I believe? If so, perhaps my guy could be heading to the College of Winterhold to study illusion magic to improve his skills. But, having witnessed the corruption throughout Skyrim, he decides to stay?

I see. Thanks. Plus, blocking out the sun temporary would be valuable for an assassin. From an RP point, my guy was merely using Harkon to further his cause!
