Google+

Well, if even DEFRON can't find privacy issues with G+, we've got nothing to worry about. :D I've been enjoying it so far, but it is certainly still in active testing. There are plenty of rough edges, and things are changing every day. I like how so far most users are geeks, CEOs of various social media companies, and tech journalists. E.g. you can fairly easily join a video conference with Vic Gundotra, Google's VP of social/engineering, or Tom Anderson, founder of MySpace. The prominence of Circles might keep this feel for a while, I think.

It might not even be about how good Google+ is, but at this point I think people are ready to adapt to anything that's an alternative to Facebook. Twitter unfortunately does not fill that category.

One aspect of G+ I personally enjoy is that you can use it as both Twitter and Facebook, since relationships are asymmetric; i.e. people you have in your circles don't need to have you in their circles - anything public that they post will still be in your stream.

...my Chrome browser. A nice little notification button at the top, even. I've had something like that for my GMail, and wish I had an icon showing me Facebook notifications so I didn't have to keep checking the actual website every few hours or so.

There are Chrome extensions for both Facebook and Google+ notifications. I don't see much of a need for G+, though, since the top bar shared on most Google products shows notifications, and I'm usually logged into at least one Google product (GMail, mostly).

Also, they should get a chat client that can be used when not on the page itself. I like to use Facebook chat to communicate to all of my friends, but it svcks when it requires both of you to keep Facebook open.

Both Facebook and GChat use the XMPP protocol, so any client that supports it (e.g. Pidgin) can connect to both networks without ever needing to have a browser open.

Anyway, those of you who have gotten in already, feel free to https://profiles.google.com/max99x to a BGSF circle. Those who haven't gotten in, keep trying. :P

I just hate that they put that ugly black bar on the Google homepage.

1. Integration with Google Services
3. Better Mobile App

Those are good reasons for me to switch....BUT, I'm betting it will be years, if ever, that my friends in Malta switch over to this, so it's useless for me to switch until then. Still, it looks pretty cool.

That would be horrible for some of the things I Google. :shocking:

All perfectly legal, naturally.

I don't believe it does though.

 Agreed, some of my friends would be horrified with what I google :turned:

Anyway, I have a G+ account, and it does some things better than Facebook, but still lacking in a few. Really good start though, compared to Facebook's beginning.

I'm getting slightly disturbed by Google expanding itself into so many things like this. Streaming, television, search engine, and now social networking? I, for one, am intimidated by our new Google overlords.

Don't forget Google Maps.

There watching us....

Eh, I guess. I think my dad's "Google is trying to take over the world" conspiracy theory is having an adverse effect on my ability to think objectively regarding them. And I don't doubt their ability to make a really, really damn good social networking site, so I may end up using it if it catches on (and it likely will).

Even if Google does take over the world, http://xkcd.com/792/

Unlike all your internet friends, who are purely fictional.
