Google+

Post » Thu Jul 07, 2011 1:13 am

Didn't see a thread on this doing a quick search, but as you may know, Google recently released their own Social Network called Google+.

http://xkcd.com/918/

:P

Ok, really though, some articles:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/234825/9_reasons_to_switch_from_facebook_to_google.html

http://lifehacker.com/5816789/this-is-what-its-like-to-actually-use-google%252B-googles-new-social-network

https://plus.google.com/up/start/?sw=1&type=st. It's in a pretty private beta right now.

So anyone here on Google+? Thoughts on it? I must say that two things about Google+ I like: 1. You don't have to use your real name (meaning you could have one for your online identity and one for your offline identity) and 2. The circles look really intuitive and aren't hidden and contrived like Facebook's similar offerings.

I'm getting slightly disturbed by Google expanding itself into so many things like this. Streaming, television, search engine, and now social networking? I, for one, am intimidated by our new Google overlords.

Frankly when it comes to social networking, I'm more inclined to trust Google than Facebook. Google wants your private information for itself and itself only, as anyone else would be competition. Facebook wants your information to be for whoever wants it. It actually probably explains why Google made the Google Circle settings so prominent, they don't want their competition to be able to easily get at your valuable information :P

Also Google's been involved in streaming since it's IPO practically, obviously it started out in search engines. All it's peripheries revolve around it's source of money: advertising. Search (text ads), streaming/TV (video ads), social networking (precision ads), phones (location ads), etc. When you look at it from that perspective, Google isn't all over the place, just very clever.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of Facebook, I still really want a beta invite to Google+. However, it appears Google+ is a very difficult beta to get into right now. I've been in nearly every other beta that Google has done, so I guess I'll have to play the waiting game.

A newer iOS user-agent string:

Eh, I guess. I think my dad's "Google is trying to take over the world" conspiracy theory is having an adverse effect on my ability to think objectively regarding them. And I don't doubt their ability to make a really, really damn good social networking site, so I may end up using it if it catches on (and it likely will).

I thought Google already had a social netowrk?

Unfortunately none of those workarounds seem to be working for me. One of my friends tried to get me an invite through the circles workaround and that didn't work either :glare:.

I am a fan of everything else Google's done, not exactly a fan of Facebook. So I'll probably give it a try once it opens up to everyone else. And it sounds like it's going to be bigger than Facebook in a few years anyway.

So Facebook killed Myspace, Google+ will kill Facebook, the only question is...What will kill Google+?

Diaspora

When is Google+ supposed to come out?

At the end of the month Google is closing private profiles, which is probably the first step towards a more open beta.

I didn't know about 1. but it has now joined 2. in the list of things which catch my interest about Google+. Along with, as you said, Google having a strong motivation to keep all information to itself: Profit!

EDIT: My only concern is that it may make my email more exposed.

Yeah, I'm totally going to make an email address JUST for Google+ when it comes out.

That would be horrible for some of the things I Google. :shocking:

All perfectly legal, naturally.

I don't believe it does though.

I didn't know about that. Or maybe I did, because it does sound familiar. But either way, I didn't recall it's existence. And it more or less gets past the annoyance of having to use another account for something I'd be accessing regularly.

I finally got the invite that my friend sent me, I'm setting up my profile and stuff now. Hopefully Google+ is good enough to overtake Facebook, which I'm sure it will in due time.

I've been paying attention to this for a while now. It's just one of those things that you desperately want to succeed. It's much more likely than anything else I've seen at least. The amount of attention it's receiving is much greater than I'd ever expected. A lot of people desperately want in. It might not even be about how good Google+ is, but at this point I think people are ready to adapt to anything that's an alternative to Facebook. Twitter unfortunately does not fill that category.

The nifty thing about Google+ is that it will be completely integrated with your other Google services. It stands a much higher chance of success when it's supported by some of the biggest web services natively. I don't think it should necessarily pester non-users about it, but if I use it, it'd be cool to see pieces of it in YouTube, Google search, Google Books, and my Chrome browser. A nice little notification button at the top, even. I've had something like that for my GMail, and wish I had an icon showing me Facebook notifications so I didn't have to keep checking the actual website every few hours or so.

Also, they should get a chat client that can be used when not on the page itself. I like to use Facebook chat to communicate to all of my friends, but it svcks when it requires both of you to keep Facebook open.

I'm really happy with Facebook. Unless most of my friends switched over I'll probably just stay away from Google+.

I started using it about a week ago and I haven't looked back. So much more useful than Facebook. I really hope it takes off, since I've been wanting to ditch Facebook for a long time now.

Also, Chrome users should check out https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pfphgaimeghgekhncbkfblhdhfaiaipf.
