Gunpowder in skyrim......

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 3:13 am

why make a powder that explodes when you can just do it with magic? there is no real need lore wise for gunpowder so why would people put the effort into create and technologically advance it into firearms?

TES already has Gunpowder. Redguards have it in loads, and they use cannons. So there is technological advancement towards firearms.

th tang mo are the monkey men of akavir, the ka po'tun are the dragon cats. but i doubt you would see either since the tassac are waging war on ka po'tun and the kamal are constantly raiding the tang mo (At least, when they thaw out)*

besides, the redguards have aleady made cannons (i think, someone did) but no one seems interested.

*this information has come form a book that has been around for at least 200 years (maybe more), it's information may or may not still be accurate

Did Skyrim go on sale at Wal-Mart or something this week?

There are a lot of recent bizarre posts asking for some crazy things.

Dwemer repeating Crossbows first, then Dwemer (enchanted) Dart Launchers. Morrowinds Bloodmoon expansion left that door wide open, even more than the existence of the Satchel Charges.
I want to see an early firearm, but the ES fan in me does cringe at how it would be implemented when there are already other means to stop soldiers advancing in mass on a battlefield.

Its not all that bizarre. With the existence of gunpowder, and cannons. Firearms are the logical conclusion.

Nope. As there were no Chinese Alchemists around to stumble across the recipe. Besides, with magic...who needs gunpowder?

EDIT : Ah! Where's my manners? Welcome to the forum and enjoy a complementary fishy stick.http://images.uesp.net/c/c4/Fishystick.jpg

It is the Elder scrolls, even the Dunmer have the potential to create gunpowder, besides if you could create a sniper rifle, rocket launcher, and assault rifle then you would be powerful, anyone want to bet that there is a secret city full of Dwemer somewhere and they have said weapons plus can sell you special type of pet known as Falmer?

And Bethseda is going to read my idea and say in their minds that it looks like it might be a good one, please don't do so Bethseda, please don't read my idea.

We had explosive (bugged as hell) charges in Tribunal, but gunpowder would ruin the feel of TES,

TES is bizarre anyway. We already have Dragon Breaks, Gods who are dead, Moth-Talk and Vivec; guns are positively mundane.

Vur'Kha can see it now. Many soldiers lining one side of a field, preparing their boom-sticks. On the other, a single mage in a crowd prepares a powerful fire spell, and sets their boom-sticks aflame. Probably them as well. Vur'Kha would pay well to see this.

Perhaps boom-powder would not be such a bad idea, and would be very amusing. Even if the other side had a mage or mages for protection, it would be too much hassle to worry for mostly stationary boom-stickers, when other types of soldiers could more freely move.

IIRC, the Dwemer satchel charges in Tribunal had more of a magical element to them, but they may have used something else as well.

I think gunpowder would be ok in Elder Scrolls, even with the amount of magic.
Not every person on Nirn is talented with magic, gunpowder would be fine as long as it was used in very primitive firearms.

Not really, I just don't want guns. It was fine in Fable, but it started taking away from the unique feel of the game, that and they removed the bows in favor of the guns, still have problems with that design choice to this day...

*RAWRRR RRRRIP POST*

I would prefer no gunpowder though, having gunpowder seems to be shoving in my face "this isnt a fantasy game anymore". Personal preference :) it seems too modern.

Not to mention the danger of carrying explosive powder around when people can spit fire from their hands.

This was about as far into the discussion as I got before I took pause. Good point. Gunpowder in the presence of fireball tossing maniacs is a horrible tactical plan. Skyrim already has enough problems with their oil supply.

i think ive set off the wrong impression of this, some people seem to think i was suggesting powerful weapons that would ruin the game and TES. I am merely suggesting an introduction of a magical hand held ballistic weapon that is not a bow or crossbow, they would work in a similar way to staffs but with a diferent feel or look, plus the suggestion of new alchemy and enchantment for such items would broaden said skills.
ah yh thankyou, i knew id get the race wrong :( but would be good to see one of those races added in the future, but as you said theyre at war with others.
maybe like people keep suggesting, and i know this is wanted by many people, we could see some sort of Dwemer appearance.....they could bring new weapons and items as such.
and there was a mention of spears and Halberds being something they wanted to see first, i swear ive heard a mention of spears added soon or somewhere

on one hand i totally agree with all of the above that disagree with this suggestion, it may ruin some aspects and feel of the game, but on the other hand it could be implemented into the game in a way that doesnt ruin things and could be used for a playstyle for people that are less inclined to use magic skills...again maybe not guns, maybe just makeshift gunpowder(or TES named substance) traps or as Elven_Princess pointed out, satchel charges to a degree (really basic). no one wants guns in the sense that we have in our world, no (Censored) way!! but basic weapons could be introduced.
i still think cannons on Forts would be a good add-on or on ships for certain missions, might spice the missions up (i.e. Civil War when you have to capture the forts)
