Some people want to just see if they can, others want to make money, and some do it for a living to find and eliminate security bugs/holes/etc.

If you come from the COD side of videogaming, modding is viewed as bad. But unlike hacking and cheating it leads to many doors of creativity like map designs, new items, mechanics, menus.....

And of course fixing bugs.

Why do people have to hack games? I have lost a few games that I like to hackers. No, they did not hack me, I just stopped playing. I cant really play Halo or Call of Duty anymore because people hack to much, and cheat, and mod, and its no fun when I'm playing 100% fair and they're getting away with cheating. Not fair, or cool, or FUN. None of it is fun.

Fixed.

I don't know why people hack ad cheat. My theory is that they can't win normally, so hey have to cheat to actually beat players that have even a small amount of skill.

As for modding, if it's PC modding, people mod to make it better, make it different, or to just make it more fun to play. I'd class modding on consoles for the same reason. I consider hacks different fro mods.

Are you talking about writing hacks and bots for games or using them?

Writing them is amazing fun. Using them. IDK.

Indeed, modding should be supported by company whenever possible. It makes the game better and
keeps players interested longer.

And the best thing for modders is that such hobby might open doors to industry :)

I'm guessing the modding in COD is just viewed in a bad light thanks to the modded controllers and modded rooms for EXP boosting.

But it can be so much more. In an actual good way though.
And yes I agree, modding should always be supported wherever possible.

I remember telling my friends about modding in Bethesda games and they immediately thought I was a noob for using aimbots.

Modding to add more to the game is a good thing. Modding/Hacking for personal benefit in a competitive environment (CoD, Halo etc) is a bad thing.

Kinda like those wall hack guys on CoD4 and MW2. They can even cause the server to advertise the websites for their mods. It is very annoying.

Another thing I dislike are the XP boosters and whatnot.

Sometimes I wonder if the File Complaint system on XBL is actually used by MS.

At any rate, there is a dashboard update ready on May 19th. Hopefully it'll ban all of those modded consoles :D

I intentionally exploit glitches in games to make people really really angry over the internet. Why? Because its amazing to see people get so worked up over video games. Never tried a hack though.

I don't think modding is the same as hacking or cheating. At least not in single player games. Modders are simply improving on areas of a game which they feel can be better. In multiplayer, heck just don't join a modded game and you won't have to deal with it anyway!

In multiplayer games its as simple as trolling.

In single player games it can be fun to dominate in a different sort of style than the game intended. I remember when I was a little-un I used the cheat (red5) to get all the weapons at the very beginning of Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. It would be fun to rocket-launch the peons in the beginning, or lightsaber them, or whatever. It's not my preferred way of playing a game, but its a fun alternative to the norm.

I wasn't talking about modded lobbies (which I avoid). I was talking about players that mod their controllers so the can have semi-automatic weapons that shoot like automatics or they mod their xbox to have a myriad of cheats.

Some cheats I have tun into on Xbox Live (MW2 and CoD4) to name a few:

Wallhack (with scrolling advertisemant... which is a DoS attack and can disconnect the match)
Lag Switch
Hearing the enemy team
Permanent IR Scope, even when not scoped in. The weapon doesn't even need the scope.
Modded gamertags (while in lobby). This one is a dead giveaway that a player is a modder/hacker.
Flying
Aimbot

Frankly it is ridiculous and it annoys me to no end that Microsoft and Activision take their time to do anything about it. The wall hack is new and has been around for about a month now. I did not name Bungie as they are always on the top of their game and bring down the banhammer regularly.

But it does brighten my day when dashboard updates come in to ban all of those consoles. I hope the May 19th one does so.

Just some clarification.

On consoles, "modding" generally refers to modifying the hardware. This results in an unfair advantage for the modder in multiplayer and is essentially cheating.
On PC, modding refers to modding the software. Benign modding a single player game adds new content and stuff, or adds a new multiplayer ruleset that everyone abides to. Adverse modding can be used in online play to gain an unfair advantage (hacking).

So, when he talks about modding, he doesn't mean mods like those created for TES and fallout. He means online cheaters, hackers, and the like.

This right here^

That is what this thread is about, not TES style modding.

If a single player there is no harm in doing so, and if you are stuck and the game story is one you wish to experience it's a way to gain enjoyment.
Modding is still at least an amazing creative outlet and great for role playing gamers.

However online or mutiplayer cheaters deserve to rot... if only because I was accused of doing so falsely and it made me PO.

If I want to play a game with a hack or a mod, thats the way I want to play it.

I dont have to play the game you want to play. I can play the game the way I want to play it.

I've never understood the "script kiddie" mentality. The people that join a server and then just start killing people endlessly until either the server empties or people are forced to TK the hacker endlessly until a mod come on/they leave. Why ruin a game for everyone? It makes no sense. Video games are supposed to be fun, but when people ruin the game for EVERYONE how can that be fun? If people are actually getting enjoyment out of this kind of thing they should probably get psychological help for their underlying antisocial personality disorder. :swear:

I get your point, but you're going to have to elaborate on it a bit. I can see how something like this on single player diablo 2 would be fun, but at the same time, I can see how it can be a problem if you were to do it online.

Well, Diablo 2 online, I did not mind the hackers-glitchers. Hacks to dupe items offline, okay, but I see no point, hacks to dupe items online, okay and it makes a world of sense to do so.

Sure online is competitive, but that other guy duping items for himself and his friends isnt ruining my online experience, actually it may even better my online experience as it would allow me to obtain items I otherwise would never get ahold of. And yes, theres gonna be that oddball weirdo who complains because now his item is devalued, but hey, tough [censored], I can either play with you with the original rules or I can play with the next guy with these additional rules.

Like I said, there is that odd group who complains. But hey, if you want [censored] tough for yourself, go for it, dont ruin my experience by making me play how you want to play and think everyone should play.

Actually, for Diablo 2, hacks for duping improve the online expeicnce. Bot hacks ftw. I never ran one, but I always appreciated other people who had bots running to keep a good community going.

Now something like Black Ops, hacking or mods for a headshot bot, or see through wall, increased accuracy when 2 of 12 people are only using these hacks Im against, but at the same time, I wouldnt be against it I hoped on a server and everyone was doing it. I aint gonna complain and ruin the whole server community experience. You join a server and half are non haks and the other half are haks, Im on the haks side, just because the other side probably already have the devs and publishers backing em :teehee:

I remember a time when almost every, or every game coming out had cheat codes of some sort. Nowadays I see people paying for these same cheats :ahhh:

Modding competitive games is a definite no-no, but modding cooperative games is fine by me. I play Nazi Zombies on WaW with a friend that modded the maps so we can fly around and shoot Ray Gun lasers out of any weapon we want.
