Haggling perk?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 8:45 am

I'm just wondering if you guys think it's worth investing in the haggling perk. For those of you who don't know, this is the perk that improves buying and selling prices.

In my last play through I invested all of my perks in combat/smithing/enchanting, and I was curious whether speech perks acquired at low levels will pay off in the long run.

Thanky!

I'm finding plenty of gold, and lots of loot to sell especially gems and jewelry which is nice and low weight. I'm not short on funds, so I dont have any plans for it at the moment.

Honestly, I've been playing the game for a week and my character is level 13, so I'm not the best person to ask. None of them strike me as being must haves, IMHO.

Might be useful if you are interested in going the merchant route. I haven't tried that out yet, but I think I will on my next character. It would be nice to have wealthier vendors later on in the game and, for role-playing purposes, my character (imperial spy) needs a cover story.

Yeah they've gimped speech this time around, which I find disappointing (one of my few gripes with the game). if my character is a smooth talker, why not give me more options to use that to get through situations? Now the persuade option comes up only rarely. And even then, doesn't necessarily impact things. So putting perks into it really is a waste. Spending hard earned perks on a skill that the game only allows you to use 2% of the time = silly.

Get the merchant perk, it makes your life 10 times easier.

Yes, they are worth it.

You can make every merchant in Skyrim a fence, and give every merchant an extra 1000 septims.

Not to mention the ability to bribe guards.

Far from worthless, hyperbolic b.s aside.

I wouldn't say they are worthless, personally I never take them but, they do make things easier to sell if you really need to.

It's not the best skill tree out there by far, but I put enough perks in it to be able to sell any item type to any merchant and to invest in stores to permanently boost their gold. Although, with the ease you can acquire gold in this game, the investor perk is mostly unnecessary.

Early game you NEED the haggling perk, and the Merchant perk makes it SO much easier to sell loot (lets you sell anything to any vendor). Also there are pieces of equipment that lower prices a bit (10% or 20%) that you can get fairly early on

speech is useless. dont waste perks on it

By about level 30 or so, this is true, but before that every $$ helps - a lot

ps I play a Mage with heavy Enchant and Alchemy - which can raise a LOT of money, so a pure Warrior might be poor until level 40 or so

Still recommend getting 1st three perks on the Speech tree (up to and including Merchant)

I've been casually spending perk points on speech, mainly because I want to be able to sell my stuff to any merchant.

I always hate when I need to sell things and I have to go to ~5 different merchants (or go to another town altogether) just to empty my inventory, and it's also annoying when I sell 2-3 items and the merchant runs out of money.

Speech isn't essential, but it adds to convenience.

I play with Cutthroat Merchants mod, put only one point in Haggling on my 43-level character and still manage to have enough money (Alchemy helps). So no, you definitely don't need to perk Haggling in a vanilla game, especially if you're going to invest in Alchemy or Enchanting.

Apart from Haggling, the left branch of the Speech tree is very useful. Merchant and Investor are invaluable if you trade often and in large quantities, and Fence is great for a thief character. I hate it when I have to go to all merchants in town and still can't sell all of my potions :/ That's why I perked Speech.

I'm guessing the right side of the perk list can be useful to thieves on a pickpocket spree, that doesn't utilize save/load spamming and don't want to spend time in jail. Any pickpocket'ers did the right hand side?

I got to persuade as soon as possible. Regardless of whether they are useful, that and allure are just part of the character I had planned, rp > efficient builds and all that.

Every perk in the Speech tree is useless in comparison to other perks you should be taking, unless you're RP'ing or using a mod to limit the amount of gold available in the game.

I take a haggling perk early on when gold is scarce*, and the other merchant perks later if I have some spare levels. It does make a difference, so does wearing an amulet of Zenithar to buy/sell.

* That is, after I've taken some damage and defensive perks in order to get my character in decent shape for combat.

I don't know if the Haggling Perks are worth the points, but the ones where you effect the economy are. Namely the ones that let shops buy anything and let you invest in shops.

However, like all RPGs. money is scarce in the beginning when you need it, and abundant in the latter stages when you don't need it.

I agree with this.

Also you can invest five hundred gold in each shop, that gives the merchants an increase of fifteen hundred gold which makes getting rid of excess gear and items a breeze. They are worth it.

I just wish we actually had an in game haggling system.

With 0 perks in speech, my Rogue owned 3 houses (including the one in Solitude) and more gold than I possibly knew what to do with. Totally not worth it.

Perks in speech is a guaranteed regret.

Speak for yourself. I've taken some speech perks in every game and not regretted it. Unless you're artificially spamming craft skills early on, gold is scarce at low levels and there are enough perks to comfortably level up combat skills without needing to worry about spending one on haggling. Later on, the perks that increase merchant gold make looting and selling more hassle-free.

There are no "shoulds" in this game.

Not if you lack patience, as I do so for me its totally worth it.

I am going to roleplay a greedy Altmer mage that wants at least three million gold, so ite totally worth it.

Without the speech perks I own four of the houses because I cannot begin Blood on the Ice if that quest was not bugged I would already own that too.

I just want to get rid of my excess gear and sell ny expensive potions for a profit so for me its worth it.

Also I don't use my perks to super power my character I use them to fit with their personality. I am not implying you make your character super powered just stating I do not ever do that unless it fits the character and I an stating that it suits at least two characters of mine, one I am playing now and another build in the future.

Sure, there's no "shoulds" in this game unless you actually plan a specific character class. My Cleric has no room for speech, neither did my Rogue. Speech perks are BAD. If you like to take them because you'd rather have infinite+1 gold than infinite gold, that's fine. I would sooner put the perk points into a more worthwhile (and fun) place.

Just because gold is scare at early levels doesn't justify the lackluster perk points. Gold is limitless very soon into the game-- and no, I don't "artificially spam crafting skills," I only take Alchemy.
