hardcoe or NOT?

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 7:46 pm

Just to make the most of the game, I started in HC right off the bat. Not quite as hard as it was made out to be except that I have to spend a lot more time stowing away stuff that I can't carry or swapping with companions who carry a lot of my stuff.

Should be called "micromanagement mode" because it sure doesn't make playing any harder.

hardcoe mode :tops: Makes New Vegas even more like the originals. It can get annoying if I get a concussion and I have no doctors bags or hydra and the closest Doc is half way across the map.

I decided to save it for my second game because I wanted to just jump in and play and explore and learn. Now that I know the geography and techniques, I've built a new character that I'll use in a Harcore/Normal game. I wanted the skills to be right and not cripple myself because of things I didn't know.

hardcoe mode on very hard difficulty... fun at first but once youve got the know how to make dr bags it aint much, till you run into a deathclaw... got 140hrs in and got the dlc glitch,60 hrs into my 2nd char.. im sure theres a tonne of people playing on easy, normal + hardcoe mode but thats pretty pointless imo

Yep, I started my first game in hardcoe mode.

And my second.

And my third.

And fourth.

Wanna guess about the fifth character? Yep, you got it.

The eating and drinking I don't so much care about- but I like my ammo weighing something. To me, it's uhokerrably absurd that I can become overloaded by carrying too many weapons, but not by carrying enough ammunition (as in several truckloads worth) to keep a Division fighting in heavy combat for a month. YMMV.

My first character was in normal, but my second, third and fourth have been on hardcoe, and now I think it's the only way I'll play from now on. I like the healing over time, and the ammo weight the most. Overall, it just fits well with the desert environment, having to to think about water and food. It adds a level of strategy to the game, and I'm all for that. Modern games are just too easy.

My second character is hardcoe. It doesn't make the game any more difficult at all, I don't let deathclaws get close in either modes!

I agree it makes the game a little bit more tactical but for me it's more becasue the followers can die easily but a work around is to just make them wait somewhere if they keep on alerting packs of deathclaws etc.

One thing I have noticed is the doctor bags don't seem to be that worthwhile. For 50 caps Doc Mitchel heals health and limbs to maximum instantly, a doctors bag only heals a little bit of each limb per bag and if you buy the parts I'm sure it comes close to 50 caps as well (barter and medicine would make a difference and perhaps a little bit more viable) but doesn't provide the same benefit as my mate Doc Mitch. The Goodsprings location where Sunny takes you to shoot Gecko's also has rad free water which means I don't have to worry about carrying lots of that around (it's a fast travel location and also a free way to replace health).

The weight thing for amo is cool, makes me only carry amo for the gun I have (usually a scoped riffle of some sort & at later levels a nice shotgun) but I focussed on unarmed so this isn't a big issue becasue can rely on punching in most cases (but not all!).

Not sure I will do a playthrough ignoring doctors for healing and rad free water sources in future, it would make hardcoe a little bit harder though.

Yep, post apocalyptic word is about survival so if some of it is represented in the game, I definitely like it. I would even advocate for more. I would for example like to have healing old Fallout way: HP is regained per hours of sleep/rest unless you use skill and or medicine. Ability of food to heal is bit unrealistic in my opinion and takes great amount of challenge from game.

...which just brought me to nice modding idea. Now I know how to make my next playthrough bit more challenging :)

I tried hardcoe mode and haven't looked back. I do wish for a hardercore mode, though. EVERYTHING should weigh something – stimpacks, drugs, even freaking bottlecaps could have fractional weight. Glass containers filled with liquid (beer bottles, water bottles, whiskey, wine, etc.) should weigh several times what they're listed as. Awkwardly large items (doctor's bags, two-handed weapons, etc.) should weigh even more.

Are you saying that carring around 15000 .308 rounds isn't remotely realistic?!

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. It's a large portion of why I refuse to turn off hardcoe, period. If I get that much ammo, I'm dragging it to a Mojave Express box, and some other poor schmuck is shipping it somewhere for me to store for later use. That's why there's a box in Goodsprings right now with 15000 .308 rounds.

First game: no hardcoe.

Second game: hardcoe.

I only did it for the achievement. I [censored] hate hardcoe mode.

Also, hardcoe mode is not supposed to make anything more "difficult" as that dimension of the game is handled by... Difficulty settings.

Yup did HC mode right off the bat and I have to say it didn't make the game "That" much harder. Was hoping to see some like ungodly hard survival problem, but it turned out to be micromanagement as said. If you want to play with explosives though the RL is pretty much off limits since each missile weighs 3lbs.

It wasnt really said to be hard. It was just hyped up to be hard by people who never played F3 with survival mods.

Did you start off your first game in hardcoe mode or not?

Yes; and I plan not to ever play without it enabled.

Yes, there's always that. Speaking of which, I'm a little worried about my character's bladder. He never pees.

First run was normal... Second was HC for the achiv., and now all my runs will be hardcoe.

My best memory of this game is from my first HC run.

I got to the end fight on the the dam... the one where you can't go, and buy stuff after starting... Well I had Meltdown perk, and was being careful to let Veronica get the killing blow on everything close when I was shocked that a bunch of (badies) jumped out beside me... I got a shot off at his chest so as not to kill him, and some how hit his head. He blew up (and so to a few of his friends), and crippled head, chest, left arm, and both legs... I tabbed, and to my shock I had only packed two doctor bags! I went through the rest of the fight with my vision going in and out, and slowed with two broken legs.

The only thing I don't like is that companions are killable, and slightly retarted. If I go for a snipe, and miss, and get the (caution) indicator saying someone is on to me, and decide to hide it out my companion should not decide to suicide rush the target :( .

That kind of thing (meltdown, grenades, etc) is why I try to have one dose of hydra that I refrain from using until things get way out of hand. Like that. Good stuff.

Not on first try, tried it a little, later, to see how it worked. Not my kind of concept, agree it doesn't make the gameplay harder, nor does it make me feel any more tension/stress. For me, if you don't permanently lose your character when you die (can't reload, it's gone, poof.) it's not my kind of hardcoe. I do like the concept of ammo having some weight etc. tho. Keep meaning to make a small personal mod to add weight to more items, haven't gotten around to it yet.

Not knockin' the mode, I do understand why many like it. Options are everything. I wish they'd had a few more combat-related difficulty settings myself..

I started out with hardcoe mode. This, along the fact that I had always bring Small Frame as my de facto trait of any Fallout game, I was brought into the world of hurt. It sure as hell made the game interesting.
