hardcoe Really Earns It's Name

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 1:45 am

I beat Fallout New Vegas yesterday on hardcoe Mode. It was impossible to play without hiding behind companions and having a high speech level. I had to try to beat the game on hardcoe mode twice. Once having gotten annoyed and switched to easy without the ability to switch back at The Battle of Hoover Dam. Playing on hardcoe was not as fun as it was frustrating. My television almost got a controller through it's screen many a time before I finally won. I don't recommend hardcoe mode for anyone who wants to have a fun video game experience.

I don't think it's all that bad but I do think it is the way the game was intended to be played. Any other way is just Bethesda's watered down idea of an rpg

I played my first game on Normal Mode- Very Hard Difficulty and the second on hardcoe-Normal Difficulty, I find it more challenging and fun to play the storyline but not to explore, do quests and scavenge.

I'm still dreading running the 105 howitzer line of death the Boomers have on hardcoe.

Yeah, I never had any problems with it at all... I can't imagine playing *without* it, it'd be a very lame experience.
The only aspect that increased difficulty at all was companion death.

I started playing it for a few hours and decided it was a waste of resources and energy. There really isn't a point unless you feel like always checking the 3 pointless bars and wasting items. The only thing you earn is an achievement/trophy.

I actually wish hardcoe mode was a little harder. Bigger penalties for starvation, dehydration, lack of sleep, also I wish they could have implemented overdosing. Like to much jet/psycho/stimpacks/morphine = death.

I'm actually finding hardcoe mode to be quite easy. I've had issues with lack of food and water, but you Starve/Become dehydrated so slowly, and food/drink is so plentiful, I never died from them. I almost never had to sleep.

As as previously mentioned, companions dying was the only thing remotely difficult about HC, IMO.

They should have added visual effects to starvation, sleep deprivation and dehydration.

And talking about visual effects...... when diving underwater, you should at least have a blurry effect, the crystal clear graphics are ridiculous.

-edit- OP: hardcoe mode is easy, you just have to think ahead, and check your supplies regularly, as it should be.

Rushing the game as if 'playing a game' will only result in death, treat your character as if it is YOU.

Actually the only part in hardcoe Mode that makes it a challenge is the heal over time.
The rest of the things are mild annoyances.
The mode is pretty crap excluding the heal over time in my opinion.

hardcoe mode is amazing and I wouldn't play the game without it on. I don't understand your beef. Unless you're talking about "very hard" on the difficulty setting..

lol i never play without hardcoe... its incredibly easy but it adds a level of realism and makes most of the items in the game have a ponit instead of just being there... 5 playthroughs and not 1 without hardcoe.

hardcoe mode was designed from the comments of the 'hardcoe' players of F3 on the forums. Apart from a couple of things, they did pretty well with it.

I'd almost say that those of us who 'gimped' our characters back then weren't the types to rush through the main quest, and didn't see much more to the game that pacing out the main storyline while surviving in the wastes. The main story pretty much became a vehicle for the character rather than a means to an end.

When a game has the capacity to take the player beyond the gameline, and still maintain a large level of interest months/years later, it's a fine game. And being a RPG player since the '60's, that is what an RPG is....

Guess that's a large part of the reason I've been critical of the ending of this game...it sells itself short.

My first time through NV was on very hard/hardcoe. I rarely had to worry about eating and drinking because I used food instead of stimpacks (survival makes them that powerful) and water when I only took small portions of damage. Survival skill is unnecessary, but it can be fun too. Every time I crossed any source of water I would take a sip and take an hour nap at most mattresses... that keeps me from having to think too much about meters.

Ammo weight and heal over time were the only things that I really noticed.

The ending seemed a lot like the Liberty Prime sequence to me... except it was nice to pick out all of the little things that changed due how I completed the main quest chain.

It's not as hard as it was hyped up to be. If you find it difficult, just go on very easy/hardcoe at the start of the game to get the achievement/trophy

The '60's? The 1960's?
No offense, but pheww. You're old.
I'm glad to see that these sort of games still hold appeal for prior generations, though. I tend to think that game designers pander to the desires of teenagers too much these days.

Are you serious? Even on hardcoe the game is ridiculously easy. Without hardcoe its probably just as easy as Fallout 3 was.

It's actually not hardcoe, it's easycore. Seriously the only frustrating thing was carrying my stuff.

i played and beat the game on HC on my first play through and thought it was great. i played it on normal for about a hour my second play through and was bored and had to turn hc mode on. i liked having to plan on what weapons to carry and how much ammo plus doc bags, food and water. it help to get a few companions to help you carry all your stuff. i play with boone, rex and ed but be warned my ps3 froze up like twice as much as normal with all my friends, if i had to choose just one to travel with me it would have to be boone

Meh, I'm playing on Normal at the moment and personally my goal is to raise my level up to 100 (MOD raising level cap) and completing all quests in the Mojave. So far sitting at level 14 I see a looong road ahead. Maybe I'll run through the storyline in hardcoe mode once I complete everything but for now I'm having fun.
