Has anyone here played Borderlands?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 9:09 am

I have some observations I'd like your opinion on concerning Borderlands, but I wanted to find out if anyone here has played it first. I've played it extensively for the last 5 months and have some questions about the game. I'm here somewhat in disguise, which is how I wanted it, because this is the only forum I go under the name: Gardenia. I've been on the forums off and on for quite a while as I have played at least 2 years worth of Fallout 3...a ridiculous amount. It will always be in my top 5 games. :fallout:

Any takers? :)

I've played through it ~3 times now co-op as the Hunter focusing only on melee. It's so very satisfying hearing you hit a super critical and watching heads explode while your partner with a gun is still shooting away.

Game is great fun for co-op shenanigans, but I can't see myself playing through it single player.

I never, ever got the multiplayer to work - it would always time out before connecting to a server.

The single-player campaign is fun, but a bit lonely (needs NPC companion bots like Left 4 Dead), and gets far too difficult beyond level 8 or so. Great fun on the early levels, though.

Fun in co-op with people you know but gets really dull when playing solo.

Huh. I've put almost 120 hours into it. Solo only, I've never played online. I love it. The storyline is a wee bit dull, but the DLC adds some great characters.

And also the loot. THE LOOOT!

Ok, I see we do have some Borderlanders here. Well, when I first got the game, I only got it so that I could just play single player...because I'm too busy with other online games to add a co-op to it. I absolutely loved the game but it has a very technical weapon grading system. I mean the people over at the Borderlands forum, are super gear freaks. Some very smart people, many nice and helpful, but I'd say more of them are sort of snooty elitists. :P

Well I've played the game all the way through about 6 times or so and I just noticed when I was playing earlier today, a level 69 Siren, that the game had lost it's fun factor. It has become much more about collecting the greatest weapon on the planet and no longer about the gameplay and the fighting it takes to get to those weapons. Some people even engage in a practice called farming, where basically all you do is repeatedly raid the best loot spots, weapon vending machines and weapon chests throughout Pandora.

I was feeling burned out on it, even though I still have 1 dlc to complete called Robot Revolution to say I've beat the whole game, this was about a couple of weeks ago. I started a new Siren and a new Hunter to see if that would help my burn out and I immediately started loving the game again, the lower level characters brought me back to the pure love of the game. The struggle, the fighting, the adventure, the bosses and just roaming around Pandora. It was not about the weapons anymore, it was about the fun the fighting brought.

But I fell into the trap of elitists weaponry with my lvl 69 character and started farming like everyone else but today while farming the Crimson Armory (a mega loot place) I said to myself, "I'm not even gaming anymore. I'm just going around collecting guns...then I said: NO MORE!" Borderlands is very fun game until you reach the top and there's nothing left to do but gun farming. It's almost like this: you've beaten everything and now you want to go around collecting guns that you can't really use to beat anyone anymore. I co-oped a few times with some very experienced players but they were complete jerks so I didn't do that again. And I too ran into connection issues when I was trying to find some nice players to play with. So the co-op part didn't turn out good for me. I guess I wanted to post this thread to see if any other players shared any of my experiences too. End of mini rant. :)

Oh well that's really about it. Any thoughts? :)

Hated it, it was mindless fun yes but way to mindless for my taste. No story, world is dull, and the whole endless amount of guns was a bit of a stretch. More like a decnt amount of base modles with mods.

I have two characters on it, but only one of them is on playthrough 2.5, my roughly level 58 Siren. The only thing that made me move on from this game, after I got the GOTY edition completely dirt-cheap on Steam a couple of months ago, was Gears of War 3. I've finished all of the DLC's to near completion(haven't finished the big tournaments in the Underdome and haven't killed Crawmerax) and I absolutely adore the game. It was the perfect antidote for me after playing a major bender in Fallout New Vegas, the really fast gameplay, the millions of weapons, no difficult decisions and lots and lots and lots of things to shoot. I do farm weapons and wait for playthrough 2.5 before getting certain things(King Wee Wee doesn't respawn) and it has definitely helped me in a few areas.

My money ticker hasn't gone below solid 9's since the beginning of the second playthrough and my fully upgraded bank is mostly filled up by Legendary weapons, There are two things I have learned: Pearlescent weapons are unbelievably rare(I've only seen a couple of pre-DLC ones) and most Eridian weapons become incredibly overrated later in the game.

I still haven't gone online yet, I keep on reading about horror stories where some kids modded Rose-Omega shield ruined some innocent bystanders saves. From what I've read there was a golden period when the game first cane out and there were no modded items and you didn't have to fear getting a corrupted save. Apparently its all unbreakable shields and revolvers that can one-shot-kill my level 58 Siren with my powerful shield that I actually earned through hours and hours of playing the game rather then spending two minutes designing it to be perfect.

Sounds pretty much exactly how alot of people play Diablo 2..... doing endless Baal & Meph runs with stacked +Magic Find, trying to get ultra-rare drops.

Was never really a big fan of that playstyle - yeah, good drops are nice, but not enough to keep farming the same bits over and over.

I couldn't get into it. The style of graphics isn't my taste, and I got annoyed that I used two rockets to kill this giant dog thing, and it still didn't even do anything. I don't care if I am level 1 or 2 in real life, if I point a bazooka at an over sized dog it shouldn't even still be in one piece....
But other people really like the game. It is a great game with a lot of good content and a good multi-player option, I just never got into it.

I actually loved Borderlands a lot, and can't wait for the next one. I'm a huge fan of the addictive gameplay aspect and the graphical style, although I felt that the story needed some more attention. The whole sci-fi weirdness twist could have been really cool if it was developed a little more, and the humor was surprisingly sporadic. I found that I wanted all the characters to be like Scooter (or at least have a similar sense of humor) and only... er... Scooter was.

Overall a great game though!

I rented it, loved it, and my dad bought it for me as a surprise, and instead of opening it, I traded it for Left 4 Dead 2.

One of the worst decisions of my life

I loved the game. I still have to go through the Underdome completely with my friends but that's it. Co-op was awesome. I can't wait for the second one. The game didn't have a great story (or a story for that matter). But when it's played with friends it's great.

I only ever enjoyed with my friends. Nothing more fun than doing a three man hunting party, all using sniper rifles and revolvers. Screw medics and extra ammo, let the hunting begin!

Borderlands 2 has potential, but I sincerely hope they add a lot more variety to your character in terms of customization of abilities etc.
