Has the UK's comedy well dried up?

Post » Wed Aug 24, 2011 5:58 pm

The last genuinely funny, english comedic series i saw was called Garth Marenghi's darkplace. it's not particularly well known but is a bit of a cult classic, and the the only recent, well known series i found funny was called Spaced, and that was from the year 2000, a whole decade ago.

Since then i've honestly seen nothing of note, i look at my collection and i see red dwarf, black adder, monty python, the young ones, bottom, (Ok, bottom is mainly slap-stick but i'l buy anything that's got rik mayall in it) and all of them are pretty old, and i wonder, has the UK lost it's humour?

Ok fair enough, 30-40 odd years of the best and funniest humour in the world isn't a record to be sniffed at, but where's the new good stuff? without naming names, i do see a lot of awful [censored], especially in the stand-up comedy world, and as for funny TV series, i see none.

Do you agree or disagree with me? if you disagree, what have i missed out on?

There are two british sitcoms from the 00s that I enjoy quite a bit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coupling_(UK_TV_series) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_IT_Crowd. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smack_the_Pony was good too, but started in the late 90s.

The IT Crowd is getting slightly weaker for each season though, wonder how long they will be able to keep it up.

While i respect peep-show for it's cleverness, it has in common with "the office" for example that it makes the viewer feel pretty uncomfortable, funny ok, but i find it hard to digest as some of the jokes are pretty off, David Brent joking about midgets may be funny for some, but it's also somewhat uncomfortable for me anyway.

I long for the days of straight up humour like red-dwarf or monty python, where the laughter is often surreal instead of contemporary, and where the laughs are with something rather than at something.

Edit, i loved phoenix nights, forgot that one.

It's ridiculous but quite funny.

Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps
used to be good, but not any more.

I wish the TV companies would occasionally consider doing unusual stuff. "Turn Phoo Action into a full series? Do not be stupid, mortals! You must watch endless crappy six jokes in Two Pints!"

Eh, it's pretty hit and miss, but lately I've been finding myself enjoying whatever British sitcoms I come across, which are quite scarce seeing as British sitcoms are few and far between here in the US, and I only find a small handful of US shows funny therse days.

Yep, another vote for the IT Crowd. Plus, Ricky Gervais has made some brilliant stuff recently. Don't rightly know how old Extras is, but it's relatively new, I'd say.

I don't keep up with what's currently running on UK television, but I have watched and enjoyed Blacks Books and The IT Crowd. I wish American television had this kind of comedy. Thank god for Netflix and Hulu though.

I'd completely forgotten about that: Catterick was a very strange little programme, even by Vic & Bob's standards. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0398599/ says it was made in 2004.

yeah pretty much, nothing like monty python or black adder either, a lot of it is either pretty poor descriptive humour like "you know when you go to the toilet......and there's no toilet paper! cue canned laughter" or it's stuff that tries to be "edgy" and "risque" except it forgot to try and be "funny" too.

i just remembered league of gentlemen, powerful english comedy at it's finest but now also getting on in years, with the exception of one or two series i haven't really seen anything to write home about in a decade, in my opinion most english humour across the board isn't currently up to the standards it used to be.

Just my opinion of course :)

My Family died years ago, but it's still going. When Nick left to do BT adverts it went downhill.

There was Hyperdrive with the fat guy from Shaun of the Dead, but it wasn't very good.

Psychoville, was that the one with the League of Gentlemen people?

You know, the League of Gentlemen was actually based on my town!

The first season was a riot, but I do agree as it goes on the series declines a bit. Still worth the watch though. I do hear the next season is supposed to be the last however.

Gotta agree with everyone else, Mighty Boosh, Inbetweeners, and the Green Ward are all hilarious.
