You really don't need to kill them. That's the bottom line. Just don't go where they are. There's maybe -- one? -- quest that requires you to kill them. Like 99% of the quests in FNV, you can simply skip it and still easily reach max level 30. And just because you're a "pure melee" character doesn't mean you can't buy an Anti-Materiel rifle, read a Milsurp's review, eat some coyote tobacco and snipe their heads off from a safe distance.

The best solution would probably to try again when you are better well armed and/or leveled, if you aren't at least at level 20. Taking the Super Slam and Purifier perks, if you haven't already, may also help towards this. Can't think of anything else besides "exploiting" V.A.T.S. so that you can get those hits in for Super Slam and go from there.

In reality, Melee and Unarmed characters kinda got the short end of the stick when it comes to dealing with Deathclaws. Even Energy Weapons, in their current state, can take them down pretty easily without sacrificing any health if you're careful. With these types of characters, in my opinion, you have to sacrifice yourself, in essence, to kill a Deathclaw without resorting to HP regen stacking halfway through. svcks, as I really do love Unarmed with a passion, but that's how it works it seems.

you don't need to be level 20+, but you do need to be well equipped. personally, i find an uppercut with a ballistic fist to be very effective. and if you plan to take on several at once, chems are very important.

armor really isn't as important, because i believe they hit through DT.

Oh it's easy, just run up to them and punch them, repeatably.

Hm. True. I think at level 14, with my character, I could take on a Deathclaw but apparently Boone and ED-E were picking them off like they were nothing. I should probably try after I get
Spoiler
Pushy.
I think that'll be enough if I play it out correctly.

Once you factor in a second Deathclaw, chems are pretty much required since with melee and unarmed, unless you're using Throwing Spears which completely just distorts the whole idea of rushing with melee and unarmed and someone else can elaborate on that, you can really only hit one at a time and have to wait for the animation to finish and all. Slayer makes this a bit less painful, or I can only assume considering http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1146426-the-wording-of-unarmed-attacks-and-unarmed-weapons-in-perks/ is still around.

Or....

This. Honestly, both work out perfectly well.

Easy way to kill them- Silenced sniper rifle, Hunting Shotgun, just takes one sniper sneak attack critical, and another few shots with the shotgun.

where's the fun in that?

picking deathclaws off from insane distances while they just run around in circles isn't fun or challenging, but punching them to death is fun and challenging

Is there some new trend going, that threads have to begin with title, subtitle, and first line of OP all the same pasted line? [/offtopic]

Bumper sword? Bah- take http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Chance%27s_knife to'em and watch'em fall.

Lulz!

Fox only!

The gauss rifle and sniper rifle let you pick them off from a distance in few shots. Use a steady and if you're close enough for VATS it will be at 95%

I believe repetition is the best form to :brokencomputer: what you're trying to talk about. Could be mistaken.

I disagree. Picking up enemies w/the sniper is loads of fun, and sneaking/finding a spot + aiming is also fun & requires a little patience (especially with caza's). Maybe not a life & death challenge, but it's fun. Just running up to something and wildly taking a swing is boring. But it's all relative. :D

At any rate, the OP is talking about melee....I'd agree that it sounds like you just need to be stronger. The Bumper Sword might not be good enough for your build/character, wait until you have a better weapon, are higher level, etc.

As they should, it'd be like trying to box a Raptor! For those that want realism, it doesn't get much more realistic than an unfeeling super-powered monster ripping your head off in two or three swipes when you think "you know what would be a good idea? I'll go and punch this thing with my power glove!" :-)

I heard there's a glitch that if you go to the quarry by Sloan without any armor on or weapons equipped, you'll never face another deathclaw!

The Bumper Sword, looking at the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas_weapons#Bladed, svcks ass. And in my melee playthrough, it definitely seemed to do so. I couldn't find any reason to use it- if I insisted on two-handed weapons, there were plenty of stronger ones. If I didn't mind using one-handed, there were some easily found ones that out-DPSed it by insane amounts. If you want a worse weapon, seems to me you'd have to go with a rolling pin or shovel. Even a common baseball bat whoops it.

Nope. They are an apex predator, which means all other fauna is food to them, humans included.
