We tend to name cats mostly by how they behave, so it's "Bandit", "Coward", "Princess", "Count" and the like. But then, those are semi-strays who just come along now and then to get fed and leave a dead mouse in return sometimes, so they were basically already advlt when we named them. I think I'd tend to wait with a name for the kitten until it had a chance to develop a personality, or else just name him or her after the primary colour ("Blackie", "Tiger", stuff like this).
Name it after whatever celebrity it looks like/reminds you of. I was considering getting another cat at one point and found the spitting image of Tom Selleck in cat form.

I feel sorry for any cat that comes out looking like Steve Buscemi.

We named our's after Mike Tyson, due to her tendency to bite (fortunately she mellowed out after a few years)
Something short and striking. Cats are simple creatures, obviously, so you should aim for an easily remembered name that won't deteriorate into abbreviations and other ways of shortening, which confuses the poor animal. My cat was named Matilda originally, but was quickly turned into Matsku. It's a good name I think, it's quick, easy and catchy. Took her a while to get over Matilda, but after a few years of Matsku she learned her new name. However she is not the smartest cat in the world, so that might explain it. Even still no matter what name I call her, tap my knees and try to get her moving she just stares me like an idiot.
One word. Up to eight letters. Easy pronunciation.
I have no idea if this helps but I named my goldfish Sephiroth. I also named my cat Cloud, I have a thing for FFVII names even though I hate the series.
