I actually like the way it was done in Dragon Age Origins, where there was a type and a material. This gave you the option to really customize the charachter more. Really in Skyrim they do some of this as guards will point out, the curved swords from Hammerfel. So why not change smithing around a bit to be based on weapon types, not on material. Make sowrd types like sabres, skimitars, longs swords, short swords, daggers. Different types of Axes, hammers, maces, etc.... then we pick the materials we use to make them. The same could be done for armor, scale, plate, leater, chainmail, etc... then pick the material. Change the smithing perks to light armor, heavy armor, advanced light, advanced heavy. Then do something similar with the weapons, maybe borrow from the skills in Oblivion, so we have bladed weapons, blunt weapons, advanced bladed weapons, and advanced blunt weapons. Then do similar categories for shields, shields and advanced shields, that gives us 10 perks to make various different types of armours and weapons, where we choose the materials used, would it not be cool to make fur armor out of bear pelts, vs making it out of goat pelts to provide different looks, or Ebony Chainmail, or an Elven Katana?Add in the arcane smithing again, and that is 11 perks so that would be about right. I just think Dragon Age did a great job with it and it would be cool to add something like this to Skyrim to make charachters more unique, plus with Elder Scrolls online comming soon, this would be a nice touch too.
