Horses in Skyrim are so useless

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 8:13 am

Rumors of his quest.Says:
"The only way to talk with him,is by tricking him"if you use a potion to become a Ghost for some seconds,he will think that you are one, and then he will talk to you(since some ghosts in skyrim doesn't like mortals)."
i'm sure that his quest is hidden somewhere.Since there's an "option" to talk. While the option to "talk" with giants was removed from the game.

I try to talk but no go... me like that horse a lot! Damn 360 :brokencomputer:

1. Gallops like snail on turtle, runs out of breath often
2. Not as fast as I am
3. Dies after a fall of a meter or two, despite being supposedly 'hardy'
4. Doesn't put up much for a fight
5. Waste of 1000 coins
6. A cheese wheel heals more than horses and it costs only 10 coins.

To be continued...

Most all your issues are resolved with Mods. If you a console gamer and/or PC user who is clueless about Nexus...well you crap out of luck.

It's not so much the horse, it's the fact that combat is limited to your feet being on ground (infantry). I think horses would be a lot more useful, if you could fight on horse back (cavalry).

This is it right here. No point in having personal horses if I have to slowly dismount to fight, and my horse immediately decides to attack my enemy in a very un-horselike manner.

He can die if he falls off a cliff...But agaisn't enimies he is badass. The best horse in the game is the Headless Horseman horse:
-Infinite Stamina
-Infinite Health
-Deals more damage than Shadowmere.
Yeah, I don't think this game needs a horse that does all the work for you. I think it needs to be... a horse.

Horses can climb perpendicular mountains, though.

I love that there are horses in the game.
I think they are beautiful, add to the landscape and bring more life into the world.

I would never use one, but I like that they are there.

Sure they`re nice to look at and all that. I do especially like Shire horses which these are. they are your original medieval warhorses. the ones that were trained to take a lot of hassle.

I just don`t ride them since Bethesda has made them no fun to.

Yep, horses are like mountain goats. If I have to go up a steep cliff my horsey is coming with me

I never use them, and the forced 3rd person is probably the main reason, it kills the immersion.

Horses are useless.

I don't like the 3rd person view (although I can live with it) but having to get off everytime a wolf shows up, or a bandit, or whatever, is so damn annoying. Had the same "need to get off to fight" problem in Oblivion, and until that changes, I will never buy a horse.

To say nothing of the fact that they wander off and cant be found.

About the only thing they seem useful for is to let you fast travel when over-loaded with loot. And to me, that's not enough to overcome their general uselessness otherwise.

After having my horse slaughtered at Sancre Tor in Oblivion, I never used a horse again. I can't stand it for that to happen.

In Skyrim, I was traveling down the road and came upon a Palamino with no rider and no Steal Horse option so I climbed on and went for ride down the road. It was great. After all that walking I've been doing, it was just wonderful...and funny when I didn't know how to dismount. :D I figured it out and got off and the horse trotted away. I will be getting a horse at some point when I can get a mod to make it essential and not before. I did have a question though. Is it like Oblivion and if you fast travel without your horse it'll be in the stable or nearby anyway? Thanks. Sorry, OP, loved the horse for the brief time I had it.

I think there should be a replacement for Shadowmere, maybe not as good as it but definitely better than your standard horse (I'm not talking about frost). The reason I say this is because
Spoiler
not everyone wants to do the Dark Brotherhood questline, it may be very out of character for that particular person.

I am pretty sure the most recent horse you have ridden will fast travel with you. But in my case I guess the other horses that haven't been ridden in awhile stay wherever they were at.

90% of the time I travel by foot, even without shadowmere.

I wish the horse would just stay inthe stable IF i have to fast travel.

Like the hired help/followers ~ I only bring the horse if its really necessary. And for me 90% of the time it just isnt.

As i said before:
Headless Horseman horse is more then a better replacement.Even you not being able to get it on Consoles.
And horses are the best option when you are Over-Emcubered ...so no.Horses are excelent distractions and a good way of Traveling.

Here are a few must have mods to make horse ownership worthwhile

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1522 Cowardly Horses, Horse will no longer aggro and will run off a bit and stay put. Also has side options to make your horse essential as well

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=596 Enhanced Horse Skin, Look at before and after screen shots. Very well done and they look better in game

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1248 Essential Horses, Stand alone, makes horse essential so they can't be killed.

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=934 Faster horses, Horse sprint is far better then vanilla, horse actually feels like a horse should when sprinting.

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3145 Faster dismount

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1767 Horse Whistle (Need Script Dragon), You can whistle your horse and they will come to you, or you can teleport your last ridden horse if you can't find them as well.

Different people, different tastes.

I actually make a lot of use of my horse. I park it outside of a dungeon so when I leave I can ride back home with all my loot. Horses aren't affected by your encumbrance which makes them handy.

This. I make use of my horse and I enjoy it. To me, it's the same thing as a car in a GTA game. Imho people look too much into some aspects of a game.

Thank you, Treece and Sting. There's going to be a beautiful horse in my future and I'm looking forward to adding that to my game (Palomino or Black). I'm playing vanilla for the first game but I'm at Level 43 and a second game is percolating in the back of my mind already. I've really walked a lot in Skyrim and that's ok to walk sometimes but if my horse can't die, I'm riding sometimes! :)

No they're not!

My Orc thinks they're great in sandwiches.

Your Orc isn't a descendent of Snak gra-Bura from the Imperial City stables is he?

Yeah, horses are just as useless (maybe more so) than they were in Oblivion. The sad part is you can increase your character's speed or athletics like in that game to compensate (so its slow going all the game through).

I liked Oblivion Shadowmere better cuz it was purple and probably had more recorded kills than me. Seriously, I'd go fight the strongest character while Shadowmere DESTROYED the rest.
