Horses - Yay or Nay?

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 4:16 am

I had 2 horses, both were killed. LOL I did avenge them by slaughtering the bandits that did it.

Anyway, I'm a collector (hoarder?) I can't run by a plant without harvesting it, so even when I had the horse, it fast traveled with me and then I had to worry about its safety. I couldn't just leave it in the wilderness, while I took off. Yes, I'm a very "immersive" gamer LOL Plus, I'm traveling with my "husband" lol and I hate for him to run after me, while I ride. So, no more horses for me! It's a waste! I just run and fast travel! Oh and I find various horses now in stables or in camps that I can simply take and ride now (no red "Steal" Horse option).

You can't climb mountains when on a horse.
I've found it much easier on horse than on foot. The horse simply drives over stuff that I usually have to "wall jump" on foot.

As for horses I've stolen a few but they always return to where I got them when jumping off them. No horse combat. I have no idea how to tell the horse to stay where I leave it :(
Plus, I've killed myself more than a few times when jumping off cliffs on a horse. On feet I can easily maneuver my drop and land well, but the horse forces itself to dive forward, maximizing the drop and killing us both.
Stolen horses always "go home". Horses that you buy will follow you everywhere and appear where-ever you fast-travel to, even if you left them alone in the middle of the wilderness.

Lol well I'm a roleplayer too, so it's only my Orc barbarian who does that. One time he stole a horse and rode it to Windhelm, jumped off the monument of Talos, then stole the two horses in the stables and did the same, he ate well for a week :D

Horses are like having one more companion, which means they seem like a good idea, but are mostly a nuisance. They run into that crowd of bandits you want to fireball, or alert that troll you are trying to sneak up on, etc. They either charge into a fight and quickly get themselves killed, or they run off getting themselves lost in the woods forcing you walk the rest of the way (a lot of good that 1000 gold horse did ya). Dragons kill horses so frequently that they might as well give dragons the ability to pick your pocket for 1000 gold in the middle of battle. Plus, getting on and off them becomes so tedious that you stop investigating things and start skipping content. They are like wet tissue paper when you fall off a ledge that your toon would have no trouble surviving.

Horses are basically good for two things. Climbing mountains is so stupid easy with horses that they might as well just give us back jump and fly spells (Beth, I hate you for taking my jump spells). But primarily, horses are only good for hauling my sh!t around (just like mules...err, I mean "companions"). The caveat to this is that making money is easy through enchanting daggers and clothes, or through alchemy. So you don't need to hauling every last iron warhammer out of a cave anyway. And if you just want one to climb a mountain, then just steal one, as getting down the mountain is easier on foot anyway.

Best and worst horse, since if you decide you don't want a horse following you to your fast travels, you cannot ever get rid of him since he's invincible.

What??? Why would you not want a invincible horse? My biggest complaint about horses is how idiotically suicidal and fragile they are.

The TL;DR version:
The only case I could see myself using a horse is if I was playing a hack'n'slash, "business in the front" kind of character that just gets right in a dragon's grill and hacks away. But for thieves, mages, alchemists, enchanters, etc., don't waste the money.

Stolen horses always "go home". Horses that you buy will follow you everywhere and appear where-ever you fast-travel to, even if you left them alone in the middle of the wilderness.

And to leave your horse behind, just steal a horse. Your horse will either stay put or go "home", and the stolen horse will go home. Your horse won't follow when you fast travel. The same applies for finding a horse, I found an unowned horse once, got on it, and rode it around for a bit, leaving my own behind; then I fast traveled while not riding the horse and I left it behind, and mine didn't follow. I later acquired Shadowmere on that save.

Isn't the point of playing a role playing game to role play?

If you remove your helmet when you enter the city, change into clothes when in your house, walk everywhere (everywhere), only carry what you can carry (2 weapons, 1 set of armor and few potions), then yes, roleplaying a horse makes sense, because it is right up to those when it comes to role-play.

There are degrees of role-playing, everyone likes different amounts of role-playing. Gameplay wise, horses are little too much far end of the role-playing scale for most people to bother.

The more you learn...

I like horses in this game. I really do. I like the model, and I swap between third and first person whenever the fancy strikes, so I don't mind being forced to use third-person.

I enjoy superman-ing up mountains on them.

I enjoy being able to fast travel in less time, and while overencumbered! It's the bee's knees!

I enjoy how their overly-loud breathing often sounds like the beating wings of a dragon to my girlfriend. It's so cute when she gets jumpy because she "Can't find that flying lizard bastard."

And then I remember that they are all born with the spirit of a Kamikaze pilot.

Horse, why must you attack bears? Or trolls? Or dragons? You are not a badass-master-of-all-he-surveys such as I.

Smart horses would look at these creatures, and say softly "No." and run away. That's ok. ..But.. not you, guy.

You always yell at them, run up, hit 'em with a hoof or two. You're amazing! For two seconds.

..and then they thwack you and disembowel you. I see my thousand septims trickling into the river like so many drops of horse blood.

Kids, don't buy horses.

I have a more, better solution + it's free.

1) Join the Companions.
2) Become a werewolf.
3) Go to Falkreath and enter the Guard's Barracks.
4) Talk to a prisoner.
5) Do Hircine's Quest.
6) Do not kill Sinding.
7) He'll give you a ring. Wear it and you'll be able to transform into a werewolf as much as you want to (no 1 per day restriction).
8) Be Sure to re-equip the ring after you go back to human form, so you can transform right away immediately.

Werewolves are actually faster than horses. Enjoy.
I thought that that ring gives you just one extra transformation, and not unlimited number.

Nay.

Simply because the mount and dismount time is way too slow and soon becomes an annoyance.

If the mount and dismount times where faster i would use one.

Nay. If you join the Dark Brotherhood you get a horse for free. Horses can help you in combat but as far as hopping off of rocks are defense against bears, they're pretty useless.

It says something like "gives additional transformation" but if you put the ring back on you can use it again.
I've done 5 times in one day :D

I like the regular horses myself. Nice and disposable. If I get bored of having a horse, I just drive him off a cliff, break his back, watch my character flop around on the floor helplessly for a few seconds, then I cut myself a chunk out of dear ol binky and I'm on my way.

Not really invincible. He decided to go sucicidal on me and attack bandits in two keeps that had a bridge across a chasm connecting them. He ran up the stairs and onto the bridge and subsequently fell off the bridge between the two keeps and plunged to his death. Seriously dang aggressive horse had to go take on a castle full of bandits by himself . He was dead before I could even get to the bridge.

Depends. If you rely on Fast Travel, horses are not needed.

I have not tried this but I have read that a horse allows you to fast-travel while encumbered.

If you don't use Fast Travel, horses do make travel on roads more convenient and are mechanically and aesthetically miles ahead of their Oblivion counterparts.

This is simply wrong. The first-person view in Oblivion was extremely well done and utterly non-existent in Skyrim -- something I find unforgivable. Riding a horse in 3rd person...it looks like its hobbled in its stride and is so distracting that I wind up foregoing them entirely, so I can not agree that they are mechanically better than Oblivion in the least.
