Horses - Yay or Nay?

Is it worth the trouble to buy a horse? What with fast travel, sprinting and all.

You can get arguably the best horse in the game for free during certain quest line. Try that one first. PM for spoilers and details.

If you're using fast travel, a horse is a waste of money.
Well, it's a waste of money even without fast travel, but that's just my opinion.

I have a more, better solution + it's free.

1) Join the Companions.
2) Become a werewolf.
3) Go to Falkreath and enter the Guard's Barracks.
4) Talk to a prisoner.
5) Do Hircine's Quest.
6) Do not kill Sinding.
7) He'll give you a ring. Wear it and you'll be able to transform into a werewolf as much as you want to (no 1 per day restriction).
8) Be Sure to re-equip the ring after you go back to human form, so you can transform right away immediately.

Werewolves are actually faster than horses. Enjoy.

how people can post things like that without putting a [.spoiler] tag on it is beyond my understanding.

Depends. If you rely on Fast Travel, horses are not needed.
If you don't use Fast Travel, horses do make travel on roads more convenient and are mechanically and aesthetically miles ahead of their Oblivion counterparts.
If you do not want them to get in your way, dismount and leave them near the road once you are ready to head into the wilderness to explore.

Horses are pretty much a waste of money IMO. They are very slightly faster than on foot, at the cost of a big hit in mobility. They are useful for prolonged sprinting to get out of danger, but being forced to play in third person really hurts the experience.

We're almost a month after the game's release, you would think that most people did the Companions Questline. It's not a week after release anymore.

I don't use fast travel or companions, but use a horse instead. :)

Uh well that's a pretty bad assumption. Not everyone can spend over 100 hours on the game already, and there's plenty of other quest lines to do. As a Mage I have no reason to do the companions, at least not right away.

On topic: horses are alright. They speed up fast travel so you don't lose as much in-game time. They are also amazing climbers. On the other hand, they are crazy and it's a pain to mount/dismount if you're looking for materials or get attacked by anything.

Only 1000G, might as well try.

that is not the right way to think when you think about spoiler or no spoiler.

And some more of my opinion.. Yes, horses are useful. Just because they can climb some crazy mountains while on foot you'd first have to find the street that goes up the mountain

Haw haw. Looks like someone beat me to it.

Horses are useless. They can't run faster than you, you can't pick ingredients whilst mounted, and you have to get off to dispatch an ankle-biting wolf every few minutes. Just run yourself, it's easier. Plus you'll be able to climb over rocks and down mountains, and you can't do that on a horse. I'm most disappointed with horses in Skyrim.

I started reading it and skipped past the rest when I realized what it was about. There's a LOT of quests I haven't done either, and I don't like spoilers. Not everybody has 10 hours a day to devote to Skyrim, unfortunately.

@OP: The only reason to get a horse is 1) You role play (in which case horses make sense, since who wants to run cross country with a heavy armor on?), or 2) You can use it to travel when you're over encumbered.

I haven't. Not everyone has played the game a lot, and some people who have just haven't done it yet.

OP: 1000 gold isn't particularly a lot. Horses are good if you want to get around faster, though I find you do tend to miss things more than if you just run around dismounted. Also, don't mix horses with alchemy - you won't want to jump off every single time you find an ingredient in the wild.

I disagree about having to dismount to dispatch wolves. I just hold alt and gallop away. :)

I wouldn't bother. Horses aren't that fast when they aren't sprinting, and when they are they run out of stamina quickly. Also, if you get attacked while on the road and want to fight back, then you have to dismount, which takes a while. And during combat, your horse can sometimes get in the way or run off in some random direction.

Horses are only good for climbing up mountains, because for some reason they can ride up inclines that you can't walk up on foot.

I have bought a horse twice since I started this character and both just disappeared after a couple days, So I am not wasting cash on them again. Besides they have horrid movement and only in 3rd person.

I have found horses pretty useful when I go looting - they allow you to avoid the over encumbered fast travel restriction so if you are looting a dwarven city and need to bring 1000 lbs of crao back to sell/smelt/etc you don't need to keep a ton of strength potions on you or keep an entire set of +carry capacity enchanted gear handy. They are also the best mountain climbers ever - was able to get up to the Throat of the World with the silly superman-esque jumping it can do.

I must be the only one who loves horses in the game lol. They act how I wish companions did, sometimes fight, sometimes run. I like pretty much everything about them, but like I said they fill the role of fast travel/companion for me (I also use summons though).
