How to Attract Dragons?

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 12:29 pm

Before getting to the point of the topic, I didn't search for topics like this. At least I didn't on the forums.

Okay, so I picked up Skyrim on Saturday. I have put in about 11 hours of game play in this game. Whenever I find a dragon, they attack me, but it seems rare to spot dragons (At least for me it is, and I don't know if it gets easy to spot them when you progress farther in the game or what)

So anyways, can I make dragons come to me? I went to the western watchtower (The one that got attacked by a dragon) and I shouted in the air. A dragon flew from the mountains and attacked me. I killed it, and I was level 3 at the time. Now when I randomly shout in the air, no dragons come. I also tried doing it at the tower a couple of times.

Do I need to learn new shouts (I only have one), or do I just have to forget about it, and I get lucky when I see them?

(And no I don't need to attract their attention)

Other than the dragons that are at some Word Walls, at their Lairs and hanging out with some dragon priests, Random Spawns are the key.

The best way to get them to show up is to Fast Travel. Probably after 3 to 5 locations and a dragon will come sniffing around and wanting to play. Note, do yourself a favor and don't fast travel to a city, or you will lose your favorite blacksmith or alchemist.

Well, I found there are several ways you can either avoid random dragon encounters or make them happen more often.

If you...

- seldomly / never quicktravel
- set the ingame timescale to be slower

you will get almost no random dragon encounters. Of course this means if you...

- quicktravel often and far
- play with the default timescale

you will encounter random dragons on a regular basis. Also, the time needed for dragons to respawn on the wordwalls will of course be quicker, too (it's 30 ingame days for a killed dragon to respawn).

I'm pretty sure the more you play of the main quest the more dragons that appear.

I fast travel very rarely and only by horse cart, and I get at least one dragon per 2-hour play session.

alternate fast travel between the college of mages, riverwood and dawnstar, for me at least those were the hotbeds for dragon attacks. My first play through most of the citizens that wondered outside of riverwood were slain by dragons. College of mages may pop at a higher level as I only remember fighting frost/fire elder dragons there. But on some of my play throughs it never seem to fail that there would be dragon trying to eat the mages there.

Most dragons are random, but a few roost in specific places. If you head toward the mountain peaks you see in the game and spot a dragon icon on your compass head towards that and you should find a dragon roosting on a word wall.

Try the mountain range north-west of Whiterun.

Be advised that respawned dragons will not yield souls, but I believe they're lootable (gold, bones, scales, etc).

I'll be sure to check these out, and see if they work for me... Another thing is I'm not far in the story, so that might have to do with it, I believe I'm only at the quest where you have to meet the grey beards.

Have you done any more of the main quest?
Spoiler
There is a spot that stops the dragons from spawning until you continue to the next part.

Cover yourself in ketchup? ("Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup.")

Okay, first you need to start bathing a lot, with really harsh soap. Also, get lots of sun, so your skin gets good and scaly. Then wear something with a low-cut neckline. It wouldn't hurt to show a bit of leg too. If you're a virgin, I gather that helps too, but it may be too late, depending on your life choices up to this point.

I pretty much live out of Riverwood and get a dragon every other trip there. Trust me you'll never find them a rarity at some point. I've nearly maxed all my shouts and I still have 30 dragon souls and I'm only 57.

You could try Dawnstar or the College of Winterhold, I swear ever time I arrive at either of these two places a dragon attacks me.

OR.....you could create a donkey costume and attract them that way.

Take shortcuts over mountain passes that have these dragon looking thingies on them. Do these when you're about level 10 to 15. Look for the one labeled "Shearpoint" about that time. It'[s between Whiterun and Windhelm near some Dwemer ruin. When you see it, save your game. Sneak directly behind the sleeping dragon and stay real close to the wall so you can pick up the word of power. Have fun. :mage:

Apology: I'm just being mean, although there is some phat loot there.

From about level 40 -60 or so:

I had a dragon fall out of the sky everywhere I went, literally like every ten feet. "Hey zone over to this orc place you want to do a daedric artifact thing at... OH two dragons at once who killed nearly everyone, load game again."

I'm not kidding about the two at once, I was getting a blood and an ice or something nearly on top of each other here and there.

Now, after completing the blades line and being higher level (69 now), they are AS RARE AS HECK.

I have my uber Thalmor dead thrall lady, with her smithed up legendary glass armor and daedric weapons, along with Mjoll (who can't die anyway,
looking spiffy in her full daedric.) So I wanted to take on more dragons with them both shooting daedric arrows all over, but I hardly ever find one now.
We just finally had a random ancient one again, the regular dragon places never seem to spawn anymore (especially bonestrewn, where I've had the
quest to kill one from the blades for about 100 days or something.)

Agreed, that when they WERE attacking I got one nearly EVERYTIME I went to dawnstar or winterhold. Now I get none there as well.

Does the game know when you have all shouts filled and like 70 extra dragon souls? Does it turn them off then? I think I have a barrel with enough
dragon bones and scales, to outfit every guard in every city with dragon armor (if only you could.)

The most sure fire way to attract a dragon is the be in a hurry to get some place or complete some quest, they tend always show up at the most inconvenient times
