How did "Blood on the Ice" quest get so messed up?

I didn't have any problems with the quest, but I had read that their were problems so I was very careful. 360

The problem with patching a quest that works fine for many (a lot of people who never had any problem with that quest will never post here) and not fine for others is that it'll end not working at all for anyone. I don't want to imagine what these forums will look like then.

yes, i recently finished this quest, it is NOT a "buggy piece of ****" - its actually a very good a fun quest which isint just like "go get this sword fron this ruin and ill give you cookies" its the sort of quest that people who really love immersion will do, when i started it i was so shocked by the murder, it felt so real!

but yes, once before i said it was the buggiest quest in tes history, ifi m honest with you i think that beth did a good job with it but by the end of it they got bored so they didnt bother to test it first!!

can the quest mess up the ability to buy herjim?
It did, but at least that bit got fixed with patch 1.04.

I've just started this quest - took me quite a while to figure out how to trigger the actual events, after I had heard the rumours in Windhelm - but when I read that it has many bugs, I decided to follow the walkthrough (+ notes & bugs section!) of the wiki:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Blood_on_the_Ice

One warning that may or may not still be relevant....I'd go for sure, and take note of it anyway :

* When you are told to question the witnesses, stay away from Hjerim. Approaching the front door will trigger the 'Gain access to Hjerim' and clear the graveyard. This will leave you with no witnesses or map markers for the remainder of the quest.
