How far do you take RPing?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 12:16 pm

I don't pick up every single thing in the game. I try not to have more weapons on hand than a real warriror would carry.

I only have extra weapons when it is quest related. Same with armor. I only keep it if I plan to use it, and I'm already wearing armor.

I think Hard Core Mode should limit what you can carry. I think it should let you carry a certain amount of weapons, armor, money, etc.

I think if hardcoe mode is added, you should be given a list where you can turn some things on or off. If you don't like having to eat, turn it off. Like only carrying a realistic amount of things? Turn it on. Want to take some sort of penalty for weather? ON. I don't want to be forced to do everything. But I may like everything on the list given. optional things make people happy

I take it as far as I need to in order to enjoy the game. I often fast travel, but I also eat, drink and sleep regularly, wear clothes in cities/towns, occasionally bathe and maintain friendships with people my character has met and likes.

I likely wouldn't use a 'hardcoe' mode though. I do so because I enjoy doing it, and feel it adds to immersion. If something is forced upon me, I likely won't enjoy it as much.

I enjoy having some things enforced, because that means there are associated consequences. That helps it to be more enjoyable or challenging to me. But if it's something I don't care for, like eating, drinking and sleeping, I avoid mods/modes that enforce them.

All of the "basic needs" mods I've tried have failed miserably, in that they nag you WAY too often to eat, sleep, or drink water. They get in the way of the actual game, and I find them annoying and pointless. My characters eat, drink and sleep anyway, it's just a habit I developed in Morrowind and never gave up on. However, I would like to see something that let you eat a meal (sit at table, order food, eating and drinking animations, etc). As is, the Dragonborn must be one genuinely boring person. He doesn't move, never talks, has no facial expressions, just stands there looking disinterested no matter what's going on; basically, unless in combat, he's a sock puppet.

I take it to different levels at different times, but I rarely go to the extend of eating regulary.

I roleplay some but I'm not strict about it. I try to use my imagination about being in the story and it enhances the fun. If there's a storm, she keeps right on going though...she fights dragons, after all. She's so busy, she forgets to eat and sleep but then she'll catch up on some down-time from saving the world...have a meal and a bath, that kind of thing. :tes:

^This.

Each of my characters have their specific ways about them, and quirks, rituals, requirements, etc.. Overall I agree though that Roleplaying in Skyrim is more a function of the player than the game. I eat and sleep as I feel compelled to more than out of necessity, so I don't follow a strict feeding schedule. I'll sleep whenever I come across a tavern after a long adventure.

- All of my characters carry a Miscellaneous item or Ingredient that is of personal significance to them.

- Maylissa, my Imperial Cleric, is a devout worshipper of Arkay, and prays daily. I've yet to travel to a Shrine of Arkay, but once I do, she'll return regularly to worship and leave an offering. (She's a new character.)

- Conan does not use magic. Ever. When he faces mobs or dungeon bosses, I play the Conan theme from a portable USB drive. And. It. Is. EPIC.

- Gi'Anna, my Khajiit Warrior, will always buy something from the Khajiit caravans to support them. A few times she left miscellaneous items and weapons in their tents as "donations".

- Arkved, my Altmer Mage, collects the robes of every Necromancer and Mage he vanquishes, as well as every Enchanted Robe he comes across.

And the list goes on. So I RP each character in ways that suit the personality and history that I've created for them, rather than strictly adhere to fixed eating and sleeping schedules. And for the record, I find nothing wrong with those schedules for the people that play that way. =D

i do this too. my Altmer will often come home at the end of the day to a nice warm bed, and a homecooked meal from Aela. unless she's busy questing or exploring
she:
is a "good" character
always gives a coin or some ale to a beggar
she helps people in need, especially around whiterun. she would fight five giants to get a single mammoth tusk for Ysolda or would give 100 coins to a beggar.
she rarely steals, but she has no qualms with looting
she allows herself to be arrested, and always pays her bounty
no sneak attacks with melee weapons
she always uses magic
returns home to her beloved whenever she can
she wants to have adopt a child, but unfortunately cannot
melee weapons as a last resort, bows or magic used (preferably magic)
will do bounty hunting for the jarl of whiterun, and defend the city from attacks (she once killed a rouge necromancer who attacked)

Personally, I only roleplay in as much as I try to get in the mind my my character and make the choices they'd make. For me, a game has to have built in effects/consequences for me to do certain things such as eat, sleep, stay warm. Much as I love the game, I think it was very foolish of them to give such a negligible reward to sleeping and eating (unless it's prepared food, which is quite effective). So no, I might think about how miserable it is travelling in the bad weather but I won't actually seek shelter.
^ this

I tend to react toward people in Skyrim as I would in real life. Obviously there would be limits in real life, I wouldn't kill someone for ripping me off as I would in Skyrim, but I would find a way to get back at them. Bad attitudes like that of the owner of Radiant Raimant and the owners of the general stores in Whiterun and Markath lead me to use their stores only when I have junk to sell off, I wouldn't actually buy anything from them. I do admit to talking to the game often and responding just as I would for real. "That's some imagination you've got, your buddy is lying dead because of it," or "are you just imagining the pain from that arrow stuck in your back?"

Travelling in bad weather doesn't affect me from a game standpoint so I don't bother too much. If I got a chill from it that affected my combat, it would be different but even in real life, I don't care about the weather if there's somewhere I have to go.

It is, its just such a pity the world reacts to none of it.
It's easy to say that but I firmly believe that you are wrong, or at least not wholly right.
It really does depend on how you RP, and what your avatar actually "IS" as an individual.

"I would like you to go into a big, old, scary, dark tomb, destroy an ancient undead warlord, then bring me back my uncle's axe that I lost."
"That's lovely, but today I am shopping. For shoes, no less. Best of luck with the axe, though."

I only take RPing as far as the play style I choose to adopt, the in-game factions I join and the in-game decisions I make.

I don't make up backstories, or other imagined concepts. The bottom line for me is that if I have to make it all up in my head, and it isn't reflected in the game, that's a poor RPG experience.

I have to see in-game proof.

I don't roleplay to extensive levels. My Nord character doesn't eat or drink regularly, although she is addicted to Nord Mead and will always try to carry around 9 bottles with her. Sleeping isn't really needed that much either, but that's excused because she's a werewolf (I'm not sure whether I'll make my other characters sleep or not ...). When it rains, she'll put on her Scaled helmet, and when it snows she wears the novice hat from the College (this really gets annoying when the weather changes frequently between snow and rain for a certain time >_<). The weather doesn't interrupt her travels 'though, since she's kind of a "wild child", and used to it. It's too bad the food you can prepare is pretty useless at higher levels, otherwise I would use it instead of the potions.

I'll put on a hood in the rain, eat and bathe on occasion, stuff like that. That's about it, though, because as a few have pointed out, it has no actual effect on anything or anyone.

This brings up an interesting point: I've always been against the idea of adding multiplayer to TES, but if I could be guaranteed nothing but RPers in my session, I'd be for it. Other people are what make RP fun for me. Too bad that MMO they're working on looks to be so generic, 'cause I'm sure there will be an RP server. Without the first-person perpective and realtime combat, the immersion dies and for me it just won't be TES. Oh well.

I think that normal multiplayer (not massive), where you just play with people you know, would be ok for RP. Random strangers wouldn't probably work. I'd like to have something simple, like ability for one player to host game, and other would just 'visit' him in his world and do whatever they wanted together.

As for now I enjoy simple talking to other player's characters as Raksha. This adds to my actual gameplay experience, as I treat it as kind of random encounter with other adventurers. With that kind of simple multiplayer I could do it in game and actually do something together.

Sometimes I'll hang out at a pub and crack some suds of my own and drink with the folks. Hit on a few of the ladies, enjoy the music, steal some fruit, get totally hammered and go pass out on someone's lawn. :)

with Skyrim I make backstories and play the character how they would act. If it had a hardcoe mode like NV, i'd bother with keeping food in my inventory and sleeping.

I continue to do some seemingly inconsequential actions, solely for RP reasons.

For example, changing armor: Depending on the character, changing from armor to clothing in town is required. If I'm going to change, I must find an inn, or a house that I own, or somewhere "private" to change into town-wear.

Depending on the character, I may not allow travelling at night. My warrior doesn't afraid of anything (and she's a werewolf as well), so she is allowed to travel anytime, and doesn't have to sleep regularly. My priestess will travel at night only in cases of dire need (determined by her reaction to the quest details), and must sleep regularly.

I'm also trying out a new restriction: can't look at the map in rain/snowy weather. Either plan better, take shelter, or wait for the skies to clear.

I don't regularly enforce eating and drinking, unless the situation calls for it. For instance, after the civil war, my warrior celebrated with a few rounds of ale.

My priestess prays at shrines, and leaves offerings. She avoids violence (for now...) and regrets killing, so when forced to end the lives of attackers, she tries to pay respect by moving the corpse off the road, and leaving flowers on the body.

All of my characters refuse quests that don't fit their personality. I also try to use quests as inspiration for character development. My priestess has been forced to make some very difficult decisions recently, and I'm beginning to fear her soul is becoming corrupted by Daedric influence...

This would be very cool, in my opinion. But until then, I'll have my character do things that I think they would do, such as eat and sleep. My mage is a complete drunk and slams wine and mead all day and night. And the good mead too, not that Nord swill. :) (he's a Breton)

Whenever I'm in town, I visit the hall of the dead/catacombs and pay my respects and pray.
I leave a Flower at every shrine I come by, as my character is religious. If I come by a shrine of Talos, I tend to ignore it. As my character has no standing in the Civil War.
