So, basically it boils down to not being seen by Elijah?

Great if you managed to find a stealth boy. :/
Hell, even when I was undetected, I couldn't get to the doors without the forcefield activating.

No sneaking required. All you need is C-4 and a detonator.
Put C-4 at first crosswalk junction.
Lure Elijah down; walk to the forcefield -- if you walk steadily you will get there before him.
Push against the forcefield -- when he emerges you will fall through.
When he is in the correct spot, detonate the C-4.
Saunter to the elevator, whistling a jaunty tune.
Easy.

You don't even need C4, just get the "demolition charge" recipe for the vending machine and make sure you have plenty of chips when you go into the vault, even if you had nothing before you can always buy more boom-boom from the vending machine inside it.

SO, about the Gold bars and making a stack in your house.

It is very difficult to get the gold bars where you want. As noted above - z does not work for moving. HOWEVER - you can move them into position. First, by clever use of the autosave and drop - you can get a gold bar to stack on another with some practice. Just keep adjusting your camera angle and your distance from your target desk/table - or whatever. Also - gold bars CAN be moved!!!

To move gold bars - once you drop them - if you find you want to move them across the surface slightly - grab a different item in the room. I have been using stealth boys - but prolly any object would work. Z the other object to a hover behind the gold bar, and you can move (WASD - not really W as so far - I can't seem to nudge the gold bar backwards - only towards me and sideways at an angle) backwards or sideways ( I recommend you are set to walk) and you can nudge the gold bar one bit at a time. Careful or you can send your gold bar to the floor and you will have to start over. I havn't really figured out what design I want for my 37 gold bars in my Prez Suite in the 38 yet, but I am practicing stacking them. Not much really to do in FNV anymore anyhow. Still trying to see what locations I haven't found but that is about it.

Agree also with other posters. set at hard and hard core, I can't really think of any reason to blow any of my gold bars on any loot. I have something like 40k Caps and rising, with plenty of fiends to die if I wanted to raise funds. But the Arsenal in lucky 38 could equip about a 20 man team if not more at this point.

This. Though I'd add one part. Change the difficulty to "Very Easy" this way 1 C4 = 1 Dead Elijah. I did this the first time on Very Hard and detonated 3 C4 and he was still alive with a small amount of health. >:|

lol 37 x 10,000, do the math !!!

I'm gonna use all that money to buy myself a used vertiberd and a mechanic to maintain it.
No more-"courier-walk-the-wasteland-f**k", I'm flying everywhere.

The gold was super heavy because it was meant to stay in the Vault.
So you can be like, "Oh, look at all this wealth -- but damn, I gotta get outta here or I'm gonna die." So you have to "let go" of the gold.
Like the end of that Tarzan movie. :D Or -- The Mummy!
Anyone who takes the gold = Benny.

Sure, you can say that waiting however many months worth of ingame time and exploiting the shop's restocking caps supply is the non-cheating "legit" way of maximizing your caps using the gold.
But it's just not worth the time. Especially considering how little use bottle caps are later in the game when you pretty much can find anything.

imo, walking out of the Vault with 1300lbs worth of gold = cheating.
Longer and less efficient cheating than using console though.

I did neither.
Just saying -- there's a better way. :D

Unless you're a derp-de-derp console player -- then, yeah, I guess the gold's the way to go. :)

I don't consider grabbing all the bars, and while wearing the assassin suit, hitting a stealth boy, walking all the way past the turrets around the back entrance past the blue field before Elias activated it as cheating. you can play the game however you want however.
