There's an application form on this website: http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/The_Dark_Brotherhood

(or you can kill some innocent person and see what happens)

SPOILERALERT.
Spoiler
Go to Windhelm, and go to the inn and ask for rumors. You'll be told about a boy trying to contact the Dark Brotherhood, and the misc. quest 'talk to Arventus Aretino' will appear. Break into his house and talk to him, complete his quest, and then sleep in a bed for a few hours. Then have fun in the brotherhood!

That's pretty wrong. At OP: Go check in windhelm and pick up rumors.

...An incorrect one that will not help the OP in the least. I'm sure everyone is grateful for your useless assistance.

It does seem as if the only way to either join or remove the DB in this game is to follow a scripted quest event.

Definately worth doing the DB quests, having a lot of fun with them so far. My main charatcer is a good guy, so i had him destroy the dark brotherhood and ignore the theives guild. But I made a second guy, sneak based, just for the DB and TG quests. Havnt so much as touched the main or war questlines with that one. Both the TG and DB lines are awesome. I wish they would have made the companions and mage guild quests as good.

Just a tip, sleeping in a bed right after you do innocence lost won't work. Vauge to avoid spilers, you need to wait until the dark brotherhood lets you know they are watching you. I won't say how, but you will know it when you see it.

But that's wrong you dummy, it may have been the case in Oblivion but you can murder all you like in Skyrim, it won't get you in the dark brotherhood.

Nah, someone should mention it to you randomly. You may have to initiate the dialogue (I don't think you'll overhear random NPCs talking about it except for one case, but they aren't random.), but someone will mention it.

I haven't found that to be true. I do the quest starter event, go talk to the quest giver again, go right home and to bed, and wind up where I'm supposed to be.

Go to the Riverwood Inn and ask the bartender if they've heard any rumors and then follow the marker. There you go. That's all anybody needed to say.

As I am a werewolf, I don't get rest bonuses. As such, I rarely sleep. So I had come out of the College at Winterhold when I had a special delivery. I ignored it. Many many game days later I slept and when I woke, I sat there completely confused as to what had happened. Heh. Took me a minute to figure it out.
