How many times have you died?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 1:33 pm

Well we have a Dead is Dead thread. I tried it 10 times, and after the 10th time or so, I gave up on it since I hated restarted the game over and over again. Now I do a "Penance Run". When I die, I take the path that we come down in the begining of the game in the Cart with Ralof, the Theif and Ulfric Stormcloak. I walk up the path turning right all the time. At the end of the road there is a "Gate" that doesn't open. I lay my favorite weapon with a blue flower on it. Depending on how many times I die at that instant or quest, I lay more blue flowers on how many times I died. Then I walk down the path till I get to Helgen. The first "death" I even walked the path of how the game started, going through the Keep and continuing on. Was surprised that the bridge where the rocks fell and Ralof/Hadvar said "no going back now" was fixed. After the 2nd death I just walk the path to Helgen as my "Pennance for Dieing".

I started a new game with the 1.5 patch and so far I have died 2 times. A bit upset at the first one, because I swear I hit the B key (on the 360) and should have went into the menu so I can have taken a healing potion. (I wonder if there is a delay because I have the same problem with the D-Pad hot keys not working as they should be.) 2nd time I died, I slipped of the mountian that I was going down.

So I wonder, how many times have you guys and gals died? Do you do anything when you die as a "pennance" or just continue playing?

I get mad at myself. No, I don't waste time any other way.

I died 3 times in a row at a bandit-infested house near Windhelm. The game gets unbalanced (against you) somewhere around Level 20, and that's about where I was at the time. This same marauder got me all 3 times, with the help of a couple of lesser bandits taking potshots at me. I was doing very little damage against him while he was just creaming me aggressively. Running would drain my stamina, and he'd catch back up. I was determined not to use potions, since they remove all challenge. Eventually, I was able to dance around him enough while fast healing (spell) to make what little damage I could do to him pile up enough to kill him. 10 levels later, the enemies are much more manageable again, thankfully.

I understand some people feel they need to make the game more challenging. Personally, I believe "lives" and "save points" are a thing of the primitive past. I've died many times, usually by misstepping past a rock on my travels, and falling.

Level 28 now, and have died more times than I can count. I agree there seems to be a time where it appears as though every enemy out there is far stronger than you, but now that I'm closing in on level 30, I find the enemies starting to get a little easier to deal with.

When I die (usually stupidly) i usually wind up mashing the keyboard with my fist, then keep playing as usual. Never have tried any penance, not sure if I even want to bother with it.

I've never done a DID playthrough, never will, I die far too often to even attempt it. I'd never make it past level 3 if I did try.

I dont know how often I have died, but I have no problem to reload the game. Sometimes it is a bad thing to have a follower. In the first time I died often in friendly fire.

I can't even count how many times I've died. Most of the time it's 'cause I foolishly assume my toon can handle a fall and am proven horribly wrong when their crumpled body is dashed against the rocks two seconds later. I don't play DiD or do any sort of 'penance', though. I treat the death like a premonition rather than a reality, acting as though the character experienced a grim sense of deja vu and having them move on with superstitious wariness. My huntress even believes that these premonitions are sent to her by Kyne, her most beloved Divine, to warn her away from danger.

My battle-axe wielding Nord died 8 times last night. I was in the "hey, I wonder what's up this path" mood and found myself face to face with a Draugr Deathlord. I had been saving along the way so fighting him over and over was no big deal to me. It was actually quite fun as it gave me a great opportunity to try different equipment and techniques. I told myself that if it gets too frustrating I can always come back later. I totally forgot that I could have turned down the difficulty and just kept at it. I finally beat him and was so pleased with myself that I stood over the corpse and drank 4 bottles of Nord mead and ate all the cheese I had left.

I play Dead-is-Dead, so don't die more than once with a given character since that means deletion of same. As for total fatalities, about 8; 2 were due to stupid moves on my part (one was a bad jump and the other was trying to kill both Krosis and the dragon at once at level 12) and the other 6 were either kill-cams (2 of which were questionable) or getting blindsided mid-battle.

I have had a number of close calls, since I don't always pay attention to my HP bar while fighting, but generally I tend to be heavily armed and armored in order to keep battles short and reduce the risk factor thereof.

I don't have a high level yet, highest is a level 14 conjurer mage, who hasn't even been close to dying yet. Got a couple of alts, still figuring out which char I'm gonna continue with. Never died, but got really close with my shielded/one hander warrior while fighting a troll.

Currently trying to decide whether to continue with my conjurer mage altmer or my two handed warrior nord. The conjurer mage feels a bit too overpowered.

i have a primary character where i die and reload. he is my hybrid that takes all of the most powerful perks. i will finish the mq with him and he will be the character i use to experience most of the games and just pick up and play whenever i feel like it. lots of reloads.

as well, i play DiD with very strict rping. when they die i reroll a new character or even a similar one. this has allowed me to experience the intensity of DiD and other character sheets that i would've otherwise not tried. (lackluster content and boring repetitiveness.) no penance.

in fact, my next DiD is going to be a "necro-sassin"- type.

where's the new DiD thread, lol?!

It's actually quite possible, provided you're careful in combat, although at low levels you often end up doing a ton of healing. This is especially true if you play a melee character, since they get hit the most.

It's not easy to do, but then that's the point.

I can never do a Dead-Is-Dead playthrough because I'm only enjoying the combat if I die dozens of times for almost every encounter.

Either I would never make it out of Helgen or the combat would feel too easy I believe.

you can have the normal characters that you have now ANYWAYS.

the DiD characters are xtra bonuses. they are supplements to the others character(s).

plus, playing DiD is a great way to improve your game, to be honest. i'm much better at combat now than before i played DiD.

and, it has nothing to do with caution or playing slow. i'm just plain better.

though, i do understand people may not want to play this way all the time, it never hurts to give it a couple tries. combine DiD with a hidden hud and you get an unbelievably immersive and intense experience.

I don't treat it as death, I treat as a Scrubs/Sherlock Holmes fight scene moment where I (my character) did some mental calculation as to the outcome. But this happened a few times, mostly out of WTF situations like some bandits that somehow deal a ****load of damage with one non-power attack or with mages, because NPC mages are OP.

But to my main point, J'derras doesn't die, he goes through a time loop (created by his user) until he survives.

I stopped playing Dead is Dead in Skyrim when I realized I was spending more time in Helgen than anywhere else.

My characters die a lot, there’s no way I’d try to keep track. Now I just reload.

I die all the time. I die because I'm trying things beyond my level and experience. That's ok though because each time, I learn something new. I learn a new technique or strategy or become more familiar with a weapon or spell's capabilities or how much difference a potion can make, always testing the limits of my little Breton's skills. I'm just having a blast and the dying part doesn't matter...I just have to do better. :) :tes:
