How often do you finish games?

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 7:51 pm

This is probably old news but I've stumbled upon this article from last year that indicates http://www.gamesradar.com/most-players-dont-finish-games/

Now I appreciate their example of RDR is probably a bit flawed but it did make me wonder what percentage of my games I've actually started and completed. Not bloody many was the answer. But, that number has gone up through the years. As I've got older I'm more inclined to finish what I've started and do the whole thing. It might be because I do a lot more research about the games I buy and tend to only go for ones I know I'll love.

In fact I can probably remember every single game I've ever finished, its that small a number.

It depends upon what you mean by completed. Played through the entire single player, sure, I always do that. But with the Elder Scrolls? Do every quest on one save? Nah, not really, but it has less to do with the quests being boring and more to do with having the same character all the time, same stats and all that.

I normally finish all the games I buy. Exceptions:

Red Dead Redemption
GTA 4
Skyrim
Borderlands

I liked those games, but the sandbox style gets tiresome after a while if the main quest's plot isn't top notch. I tend to explore every nook and cranny on the map and then quit.

I finish pretty much all games, unless they're sandbox games that require a 100% completion or something in order to call it "finished".

This. I pick my games carefully and will always end up buying games that I like.

I looked at my PS2 shelf a while ago and realised I only finished 25 of my 55 games (45%). For more recent platforms, like Wii and PS3 I probably finished even less of my games, not to mention the amounts of PC games I have yet to play at all.

This all also made me realise I've been far too wasteful when it comes to game purchases in the past ~3 years, I'm gonna cut down on it :P

only 10 percent of players completed the final mission in Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption.
Obviously. That's because it's just like a GTA game in the sense that it's more fun to run around and play with your friends than to actually play through the story. RDR is a terrible example.

I finish pretty much every game I play. 90% of players don't see the ending of the games they play? I say that's complete and utter BS based on poor information.

I usually finish my games, but there are some exceptions, like Dragon Age: Origins and Bioshock 2.

When I was a kid, I would finish every game I've played. Now...not so much.

If I own it then I've likely beat it aslong as it's from the 6th generation and on. Many games I never finsihed as a kid. THings liek Mario or Battletoads for the NES or Donkey Kong 64 for the N64.

Did you play RDR? It has got a FAR better story and is more story focused than any GTA game in existance, so don't base your opinion on that. However, if you did play it.... well, you're entitled to your opinion.

Unless something stops me, like game-breaking bugs or outright hating the game, I finish pretty much everything I play.

Judging on the later direction of the article, I'd say it's based more on Activision making excuses for short games and release day DLC.

If yuo mean complete the game 100%, then almost never. If you mean playing through the singleplayer etc. almost all games I buy. Granted the open world games made by Bethesda is kinda hard to complete, though if you take all my hours in lets say Oblivion I think I have covered just about everything there is to do.

I "finish" my characters in RPGs, if that counts. That is to say, I play them until I am bored of them, finished with the main story or not. In Bethesda games that usually means 30-50 hours a character.

Also, whaaat? 90% of people who played RDR never finished it? 90% of people need to go back and finish that damn game.

What exactly is the ending of RDR?

Spoiler

Is it when John Marston's son avenges his father and kills the guy by the river in Mexico?
If that's it then yes I've beaten RDR, and I'm proud to say that I'm one of the 10 % who did so. That number sounds awfully off though.

The true ending is that, yes, but
Spoiler
Marston Sr.'s death
is the simple ending. Personally, it's a travesty for someone to have started the game and not seen the ending, so I hope the numbers are off.

I'm a strange one in that regard. Almost all the games I play and really like, I'll play right up to the end, right before the final boss fight. Then I'll stop playing and play something else. I don't know why that is, but I have countless on-the-brink-of-being-finished games lying around here...

I believe that I "finish" most of the real game purchases I make. ("real" meaning..... well, a good number of these silly $2 games that I bought last Steam sale. Um. Yeah. May get to finish some of those someday.)

I finish pretty much every game I play. 90% of players don't see the ending of the games they play? I say that's complete and utter BS based on poor information.

It's not a perfect sample (since a number of people played FO:NV with Steam offline, or achievements turned off), but.... looking at the global achievement stats on Steam for Fallout: New Vegas
Reach lv10 - 56%
Lv 20 - 41 %
Discover 125 locations - 21 %
Pick 25 locks - 45%
Hack 25 terminals - 15%
Finish the game in hardcoe - 7%

The different "finished the game" ones:
No Gods, No Masters 16%
All Or Nothing 7%
Eureka 10%
Veni, Vidi, Vici 4%

Now, like I said, it's not perfect. The people who turned off Achievements in some way are more likely to be the more enthusiastic, and so more likely to have actually done alot of the tasks listed. On the other hand, those "finish the game" ones can be overlapping.... more than one can be gotten by a single player. So, yeah. Not amazingly accurate. But it still paints a picture that a good number of people pick up a game and don't actually do much with it. Especially compared to those of us who are motivated enough to talk about the things on forums. :)

-snip-
It's funny, I just looked up the global achievements for Skyrim before seeing you post this.

For the Dragonslayer achievement, the one you get by beating the main quest, 32.5% of people have gotten it on Steam.

Woah, only 1/2 of players reached level 10?

I'm thinking the pc players of New Vegas (Or any game for that matter) don't really care about the Steam achievements (I mean, I sure don't) and used the console at an earlier level.

The majority. 80% of the games I play I finish. Though there are some that I just can't get into for various reasons. For me a large number of those are indie platformers or point and click games. I just always seem to run into game breaking bugs that no one has a way to fix. As a matter of fact I've made it my goal not to ever buy one again no matter how awesome it looks.

And seeing as even resetting Field of View borked your achievements, yeah...
