How do you top Dragons and "the eater of worlds."

Akaviri invasion with multiple enemies on screen at once. Much like this.

The next Elder Scrolls game will take place in Summerset Isle, dealing with tension between the Empire (whether it be Mede's or the Dragonborn's, or some other human) against the Aldmeri Dominion/Thalmor. The twist is not only the end of the cold war and the beginning of full scale war between the two super powers, but there are rumors of strange beings coming from across the ocean.

Beings coming from the same direction as where Aldmeris was reported to be... Elder Scrolls version of Atlantis anyone?

Easy, as any lazy movie producer will tell you, more villains, at once. Just like the first super hero movie always features the most famous villain and then multiple lesser villains by the time part 3 rolls in, Skyrim will do the same.

By my current calculation, TESVII will have you shielding yourself and your wife Azura from Mehrunes Dagon's attack after dodging the combined lightning bolt of three Mankar Camoran clones while riding Alduin (Face-Heel-Turn + Defeat-Means-Friendship).

Makes for a nice poster.

I just hope they don't feel obliged to include dragons in any future title, because their customers expect "Dragon Fighting 2" instead of TES VI.
I agree, they'll be nice but I don't think necessary for future titles - we can replace them with other grand beasts. Giant sand worms in Elsweyr, perhaps?

I think they're gonna have to have Dragons now because if the shouts are as awesome as they look how can they have a game without them it would feel like its missing something.
Well having the shouts wouldn't really make as much sense without being Dragonborn (not impossible, just far less likely), and I'm sure future titles will give us some other equal protagonist powers in TES: IV if the Dragon shouts are that loved.

 I'm not sure what the hell you are talking about. All of the TES games in the series stood on their own. What do you know of that was part of the MQ in any of the previous titles that is in Skyrim...nothing. Skyrim is a game on it's own just like OB, MW, DF, and Arena.

Simple. New technology.

Imagine your hair flowing in the wind, standing on top of a mountain that makes the throat of the world seem small. Imagine two armies charging into each other on horseback. Dust, blood and brutal combat. So much noise and screaming you can't even hear yourself think.

Think of physics so real, like that demo you linked the other night.

Imagine each NPC having a story to tell and a life story so involved even beggars have more life than the main quest actors of Oblivion.

Think of a wagon running someone over and smashing them into a broken pile of bones and meat.

Think of wind blowing your robes around you the same direction as the grass blowing in the same unified wind and the wind slowing your movement or speeding it up ever so slightly as you run.

Imagine being recruited into an army and working your way up the ranks until you are commander of that army, and then have to breach a stronghold with trebuchet, or defending your keep and dumping hot oil on people below. Seeing hundreds of flaming arrows coming at you and people running around fire screaming. Watching your people get slaughtered or saving them.

There is so much games can do in the future, I'm only scratching the surface really.

Pfftt..Tes VI: Anu and Sithis.

There are many ways to top the world eater. The realm of mundus could start destabilizing from the loss of the towers and the stones that keep it 'stable' and the PC needs to rip divine bodies out of the mythic and force them to become stones for new towers which are made out of Aedric corpses

Epicness accomplished sir..

Why does Bethesda have to "top" it? Why not focus more narrowly on an area and with greater detail? As long as the story (#1) and gameplay (#2) are great, they don't have to top anything.

That's what its for me anyway.. Well mybe not a smaller area but the living woeld and gameplay.

Why top anything? We don't need to go "Dragon Ball Z" here and attempt to create villains that are ten times stronger than the last one.

I'm happy with dealing with a regular, conniving, silver-tongued mortal who uses his/her wits and charm to bend people to his/her will.

Yes, and underneath the surface is heart and feeling. One of the most popular films ever made is "The Shawshank Redemption" which is a small story but with very heartfelt themes, and when characters touch you like this they stay with you forever. So instead of trying to top the last game, focus on combining the new technology with age old storytelling, so that we care what happens to our characters.

I also would love the idea of building our town/city.

I know I'm looking too far ahead, but how does Bethesda top the challenges in Skyrim?
All the games had something special...
In Morrowind you:
(1) killed one (or more) living gods while
(2) becoming a near immortal. (You stopped aging and became immune to all diseases)
In Oblivion you
(1) fought a god (or more) while
(2) closing gateways to another (demonic [looking]) realm
and could even
(3) become a god

I'm excited about a new ES game coming out but somehow dragons, one more god and people with dangerous voices don't top becoming a god or a near immortal. They might rank somewhere around there (depending on how it's going to be implemented) but not above. :)

I think it all comes down to creating an immersive world where you do a lot of great things not one HUGE, EPIC thing. ...It wouldn't hurt to add the Tsaesci (golden skinned snake people of Akavir) to the game (that would top it for me)

I personally hope they just drop Tamriel for awhile after this. They have taken it too far now with everyone expecting greater and greater epic events. They should simply go back to a true "sandbox" game. Set it in Akavir and simply craft a dynamic world full of lots of little events that the player can shape and mold the world they live in. A truly dynamic world where if you played it 60 times you could have 60 unique endings with different kings and guilds in various levels of power because of your actions in the game.

I don't need anything "epic" to happen in a TES game. I would be just fine if they didn't include the linear MQ storyline. Strive for making a TRUE open world, where actions have long lasting if not permanent effect on the evolving world. To me, that would catapult the TES series back to the forefront of innovation. Oblivion had more of an amusemant park feel to it rather than a true open world. Sure, you could wander anywhere you wanted, but each area had its own "ride" that you enjoyed when you got there.

Its a bit like Dragon Ball Z. Every enemy is the most powerful one in the entire universe.. until the next one shows up.. and the next.. and the next.. and the next.. ah my childhood.

EDIT: Seems I was beaten to my post.

Personally, my idea for a future TES game goes as such.

You start out as a blank slate as usual, if not more so this time so that you make your own history.

At the beginning of the game you pretty much are just dumped into the world and are free to do whatever you want. The world will be teeming with quests and adventures, some epic and some not so much. You may end up saving a kingdom or becoming a king yourself, or just owning a tavern and going about a day to day life.

It would be the ultimate sandbox TES game. There would be many epic stories to be told but only if you are willing to get out into the world and seek them out. Maybe down the road they will be capable of not only doing one province but many if not all of them. A whole world filled with adventure.

I realize this isnt for everyone but it would be my perfect game. It's just a fantasy I toss around the old noggin.

Nothing so far has really "topped" the world eater as a threat but... what if someone achieves chim and the only way to stop that person is to achieve chim yourself ? Chim tops the gods doesn't it ?

Don't worry. TES is Bethesda's baby. The world will end first before they give their baby over to someone else.
