How's your life changed since you joined these forums?

When I joined I was at school, fumbling with the TESCS trying to make my first Morrowind mods. Since then I've graduated both high school and college, worked freelance for several years, interned at Google in Switzerland and the US, and starting my fulltime job with them in a few months (would've been there already, but couldn't fit the US visa quota <_<). Life's been good.

EDIT: Holy hell, I've been a member here for more than a third of my life.

If I may ask, are you really in Amman?

I am, though thankfully not for much longer.

Not that much, really. That summary spanned 8 years, and Switzerland and the US were pretty much my only non-vacation travels outside the Arab world. I'm not in Amman as a traveler; I've lived here in Jordan for the latter half of my life (born and brought up in Ukraine).

Even though it has been 8 years, you seem to have moved around more than most people I know (my parents being the exception). Is it something you intentionally chose to do (moving between those countries) for whatever reason or is it just where business swept you along?

The specific choices weren't planned - I just took what I could get, but I've always planned to get out of Jordan as soon as I can, and I have certainly enjoyed both Switzerland and the US a lot (the former is particularly amazing, but I lived in Zurich and spoke no German, which really svcked).

Graduated from the vocational school.
After that I went into army and was picked to one of the best and most badass military unit in corps. (IMO)
After my service, I was accepted to UAS, and now I'm doing the job I love.

I can imagine that would svck. How does living in a place but not speaking the local language work, anyway?

Anyway, you make moving across countries seem easy and commonplace. If you've really been on these forums for over a third of your life, you must roughly be 24 or younger, if I'm not mistaken. I'm at 2/3s that point and haven't been able to see nearly as much as I want. I've seen Canada and certain parts of the U.S., but the trip to France to visit my cousins didn't work out, that planned trip to Egypt never worked out, going to Lebanon to visit family seems completely out of the question, Italy's not seeming possible, and I can't even go to Canada anymore because my passport is expired... and these are all just for vacations. Switzerland certainly sounds interesting and I'd particularly love to see Japan (Is it even safe?), Egypt, and perhaps Greece, but at the very least, I want to leave this town. It's got nothing in it.

Quite a bit. Mainly getting engaged to IHaveAFatDog. Also experiencing the joy of Morrowind.

I was just thinking about when I joined these boards, back in 2008. I guess I was never the type of kid you'd think who'd love video games enough to make an account on a forum for one, but that's how it goes. Me, I was still in high school, and I joined a few days before my birthday. So many things different, still with my ex, still was immature...that person who started posting on this account is just so different from the one posting now!

What about you guys?

I joined these forums wayy back in 2004, I was 14 then, and I'm 21 now. I feel the same. I was not the same person that I'm now. I think my first post was asking how to find the dwemer puzzlebox in Morrowind. :D

Let's see...I lost most of the contact I had with my best friend, but fell in love with the girl of my dreams. That's it, really. I've been on a rut for many years, mostly replaying old games and chatting online with people (Yet hardly making friends with any of them). My life is boring and this topic made me realize it. I hope you're happy. :cryvaultboy:

These have probably been the strangest years of my life.

Drank some things
Smoked some things
Ate some things
Developed some type of personality disorder
Gradually withdrew from the world
Wrote some things
Experienced the death of someone I loved again

I'm having trouble thinking of all the positive things  Probably sound like quite the whiner.. but I just feel like I might have made quite a few of the wrong choices during these years. I'm doing much better now though

Well, you can get around with English enough to survive in most first world countries, but I certainly wouldn't want to do it on a permanent basis.

Anyway, you make moving across countries seem easy and commonplace. If you've really been on these forums for over a third of your life, you must roughly be 24 or younger, if I'm not mistaken. I haven't done it myself, but many of my friends traveled all over the world (Germany, Spain, Finland, Japan) by getting into student exchange or volunteer programs. Most of them are pretty easy to apply to, so if you're serious and willing to write a couple of essays or attend a few interviews, it's worth trying. I don't have particular examples for US, but they shouldn't be too hard to find online. Once you're attending college it gets easier. You often have internship opportunities, and many colleges will also sponsor trips to competitions and conferences if you display sufficient academic or sports skill. I've been to Egypt and Lebanon for competitions on my university's dime (we lost both competitions :P).

Yeah I definitely had some fun. It just left me kind of out of touch with reality.. Which I suppose isn't too bad either. Reality is pretty lame anyway :hehe:

Well I started coming to these forums when I was 17. Since then I graduated high school barely, didn't work after that for 4 years..was a bum having fun on the PC for 3 years. Had some love, lost some love, got a job..still have that job and many other small things and now I'm gonna be 24! My personality changed quite a bit though, got a bit more intelligent..and can now type faster.

Well when I joined I was a tad younger and stupid. Thought I knew everything.

Now, I actually DO know everything!

On a serious note, though, God. I'm the same-ish person but so much has changed. When I joined I don't think the notion that I was furry or bisixual was in my mind, but here I am now. Back then I basically thought the internet was a big game, so there was no reason to be honest about myself, could just travel from story to story, sound as interesting as the other people around me. I've grown up :P Since then, too, I've lost some friends, made some wonderful new ones, gained the knowledge and wisdom that comes with age. I s'pose I've taken a slightly more serious demeanor in approaching life, too, though I'm still the horrifically optimistic person I've always seemed to be. Still kinda arrogant (though I try to be humble), still introverted, still weird. Spinning my wheels on the approach to college, but I've still got time to figure stuff out.

It's weird, to think about it. I was so different back in '06, but also so similar.

Edit: I've also gained the ability to grow a beard, which, frankly, is awesome.

I joined the forums after playing "Arcanum" and "Morrowind". I noticed the quality of the original Lore RP, Loranna's RP, and joined in for a couple of years. Writing in an RP in those days was intense, like being a jazz musician improvising in a small group. Many of the brightest forumites moved on, some years ago -- Solin, Allerleirauh and her husband Rhedd among them. The RP faltered without them, and finally stopped, around 2007.

I was already a gamer, but these forums taught me of the existence of subcultures: that there are MMOs (and I eventually joined "Guild Wars", last year) for example. I learned more about popular culture. I also learned from MK's imaginative writing and the discussions of it on the Lore forum, including Eliade's concepts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_Return_(Eliade) It's become harder to stay with the forums, but I'm still going to buy "Skyrim".
Still the same underachiever that I was before joining the forums.

Graduated High school
Grew a beard
Started going to university
Changed courses at university
Decided (roughly) what I want to do with my life
Got pants that fit well, which is a pain in the [censored]
Dusted my shelf
Gave one of my better friends butter for Christmas
Gave another her textbook back for a different Christmas
Started enjoying FPS's (BLASPHEMY!)
Shaved my neck beard
EDIT: Also got big into Youtube (watching them, not making them....yet)
....yeah that's about it

I joined back in november after injuring my back and being ordered by my doctor to quit my job. I pretty much confined to my couch as it took me the best part of 5 mins to just stand up. I was bored and kind of obsessed with Fallout, so I had a look at the forums, found some of the stuff on here interesting so I joined.

Since then I can walk properly again and pick my kids up.

I also learned how online RP's work and now have one of the longest running (second longest running, that I'm aware of) RP's on the Fallout boards.

i was the same way.
