The very first rods were really polls with a line, hook, and bait and when you got a fish on you had to pull the fish in to a net or the shore.

Yes, and there are poles still like this today. However, Reels, which is on the rod in question is what is throwing the OP. But, Reels have been made since the 1100's. Any society that has the technology to make a lock and a water wheel can make a fishing reel.

This.

I was really confused about what this topic was about. I thought there was some kind of crazy BassMaster 6000 easter egg.

Wait, Skyrim is not real, it does not take place on Earth? Great, next you're going to tell me Santa Claus and the tooth fairy don't exist either.

If this is true don’t you think it’s strange that a society perpetually on the verge of war on a consistent level can invent the reel for a fishing pole but not a crossbow?

You think that's weird, I saw a Khajiit strolling down the road with a .45 glock stuffed in the back of his pants.
That doesn't sound too unusual actually, the Khajiit have been known to smuggle all kinds of Dwemer artifacts between Skyrim and Morrowind. ;)

As someone pointed out already, the reel was invented in early Medieval times, so it fits in just fine.

And as about a thousand or so people pointed out when the no-crossbows thing was first announced: they never made sense as a weapon for an individual traveler in the first place. They take forever to reload, and they're much heavier than a bow. They were used by large groups of infantry.

Yup, this is correct. While I want it back in the games for the pure nostalgy and for the hell of it, it makes little sense. The crossbow was designed for anyone to use easely, as bows required expertise and much training.
They were given to large troops of militia soldiers mostly, who then could easely use a ranged weapon with minimum training. If they had a wall or something to cover them up, the reload time had little to say.

But I still want them back.

If the crossbow was such an inefficient weapon than why is it still around today, the crossbow proved to be a much better individual weapon than the bow because it didn’t take a considerable amount of experience to use a crossbow as it does a bow. Just about any solider could use a crossbow, not anyone could be an archer. And if the gun was never invented the crossbow would be the most widely used personnal weapon today.

I didn't say it was inefficient for soldiers. It's terribly efficient for them. Because a few hundred men with crossbows will be much more deadly than a few hundred men with bows. I said it was inefficient for a single adventurer, given its insane reload time.

But let's get back on topic: the fishing pole makes perfect sense.

I hate that. You wave money around in front of the dragon, but it just shows you a little wing and some underbelly. Then I have to go on the internet to get my full-frontal dragon experience.

Crossbows were for use against armored foes, not because they are a better way to shoot an arrow. Outside of their effective range, crossbows svck for archery. Inside their effective range, they have more penetration power for punching through armor. Crossbows are also intended for non archers to use once during an assault, not for use during a battle due to slow reloads.

If you want to know what it is like to use a crossbow in these games, load up Morrowind and try it. You will understand why they were removed from the series.

yep using a crossbow is a freaken nigthmaire really slow and hard to reload, low range compared to a long bow and if anyone with a sword is clouse enougth for you to take advantage of theyr piercing power you better not miss cuse they will have your head rolling on the floor before you have the chance to reload the damn thing
