considering that skyrim don't take place on earth, maybe their fishing knowledge is really high and they invented good fishpoles
That could be so. Or a group of Khajiit could have came to Earth on that UFO that you had spotted and they stole a few to see if they could make a few Septims by selling them in their Caravans..
Ok in every house or inn there are huge fires with floors above them and no chimney to let the smoke and heat out, and yet there has been no buildings burning to the ground.

I'm currently carrying 680 pounds in mine! It has been 200+ days since I have been able to find my [censored] down there. I'll find it someday, my wife is getting upset. I've just started stashing all my gold in somewhere you don't want to know.
I did not know there were so many ways to make a fishing pole that modern ones look that different than older ones.......
Unless they look like http://fishingcampgears.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/fishing-rods.jpg, it would be hard to discern a "modern" one from a "period" one in game, I think...
The very first rods were really polls with a line, hook, and bait and when you got a fish on you had to pull the fish in to a net or the shore. http://www.oldmaster85.com/history_of_fishing.htm
