Humor in Skyrim and other TES games

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 6:18 pm

I came to think about funny stuff that was implemented in the previous The Elder Scrolls games and did a search, but it didn't come up with anything particularily in the alley I was thinking about. This isn't "this and that happened randomly ingame so I lol'ed" - this is about actual humor consciously implemented into TES games by its developers, like a funny item or a really silly NPC dialogue line. So, here we go:

Have you come across something in Skyrim or another TES game that clearly was put in simply, or mostly, for the sake of its humoristic effect?

I remember there being quite a bit of humor implemented in both Oblivion and Morrowind, but seemingly not so much obvious humor in Skyrim?
Like the Boots Of Blinding Speed in Morrowind - not only fairly useless unless you had magic resistance to counter its "blind self" effect or wanted to race around the map at a neckbreaking pace with complete lack of eyesight, but the item name is a good pun as well, considering the item's properties. (For those that never played Morrowind - the Boots Of Blinding Speed were a pair of unique boots that made the screen pitch black and increased your run speed to that of a racecar when you wore them.)

How has humor in the TES games affected your perception of the game, and did it affect your gameplay?

Personally, I think a bit of humor here and there takes away the overly serious feeling that alot of games have, and if well done it makes games more enjoyable to play.
Some of the Nord guys in Skyrim kind of sound like Arnold, but I can't really tell if that's intentional or not. It cracks me up every time, though.

Without spoiling anything: there is a quest springs to mind that was intentionally amusing. A goat is involved.

I convinced some kid in an inn that i was a wizard and had turned him invisible. He now runs around "haunting" the guest by saying booo and making ghost sounds.

I completely forgot about that one! Good quest, both amusing and nice reward, and it's got that "wtf-lol" touch to it.

In Skyrim there's a lot of humor if you search for it and put itself into its proper perspective (i.e books,quests,Npcs..)

There are also a few humerous little things, like a skeleton lying on a hay stack with his hand reaching for a bottle of mead (last wish before dying), or another burried in a mine with his hand coming out of the ground, holding a lantern. These little things make me laughs when I'm in "serious dungeon mode".

I find a lot of humor in Skyrim and one of my favorites is when a certain court wizard comes right out and tells you he's sending you on a dangerous fetch quest. Just hilarious. :tes:

I've found alot of funny little things in Skyrim that make me smirk, but what makes me crack up the most is the Dark brotherhood members.

Though, in my opinion, TES doesn't need more humor, I think the gamesas team should stick to the dark jokes.

I love the lines like those, cicero is always good for a laugh too.

I found Japhet's journal really funny, but that's probably me just having a sick and twisted sense of humour.

I think the most obvious humor I have found in Skyrim comes from M'aiq. I cannot really think of very many funny things this time around..

Farengar and Odaviing is intentionally funny.

If I understand what you're asking.

edit: J'zargo in general is funny. Even just how he trains (blasting the college walls... unless that was a bug).

That Shroud Hearth Barrows quest is pretty ironic and funny, if you read the guy's journal then see what you get for the quest reward

I think the Argonian in Solitude is F-en funny!!! That one line where he's all like: " If your board stranger, I got something for you" I flash right to a gigalo, I have to stop and snicker every time.

When I am playing my friend and I are talking on TeamSpeak. I haven't done the quest that starts with a drinking contest, but my friend has. The humor i found was when my friend said, "Uh oh, I did the drinking challenge and when i woke up, I am in a different country!! How did I get here!!!
I couldn't stop laughing at him! Maybe not humor in Skyrim itself, but it was very humorous!!

Haha, yeah! I forgot about him.. Little random things like that really add flavour to the TES games.

I think the zealous Talos preacher in Whiterun is intentionally over-zealous, to the point that he's a really a charicature of any religious preacher, and although he's incredibly annoying, he's kind of funny too. Like Faendil (..or what's-his-name) who kept nagging about that ring of his...
